Kakheti Wine Tours from Tbilisi: Towns, Transport and Prices
Forty tours from 12 to 269 EUR. Day trips cost a median of 21.3, private tours 106.9, and nothing sits in between. The wine is 2 to 3 hours from Tbilisi.
The wine is two to three hours from Tbilisi by road, a shared marshrutka there costs 12 to 15 lari, and nothing public goes the last stretch to a cellar. That is the practical fact behind every Kakheti wine tour, and it is why 40 of them exist on this page, from 12 to 269 EUR. They split into 20 day trips from Tbilisi at a median of 21.3 EUR and 20 private tours at 106.9 EUR, and the two halves barely overlap.
This page covers Kakheti as a place: the towns the tours use and how far apart they are, how to get there without a tour, what a cellar charges at its own door, the dates that explain the landmarks, and when to go. The two formats have their own pages with every listing: the day trips from Tbilisi and the private tours.
Georgia as a country, the UNESCO listing and the question of the "8,000 years" are on the Georgian wine tours page. Here the subject is the region.

Kakheti wine tours from Tbilisi: two formats, almost no overlap
Kakheti is the only wine region in Georgia on this site, and all 40 listings belong to it. Their prices tell you what kind of day you are buying. Group days by minibus leave Tbilisi in the morning, stop for bread and cheese, stand in front of Bodbe monastery, walk Sighnaghi and finish at two cellars. They cost 12 to 35 EUR in 14 of the 20 day trips. Private days cost 54 to 269 EUR, are often limited to eight or ten travellers, and stop for lunch at a family cellar, sometimes adding David Gareja or the Khareba tunnel.
In the middle there is a gap: nothing in the day-trip category costs between 35 and 85 EUR.
The bars overlap only at about 80 to 90 EUR, where the dearest day trips meet the cheapest private tours. A day that costs 85 EUR is either a small private tour or a very well-provisioned group, and the description will tell you which. Do not average the two markets. A 40 EUR Kakheti tour is neither cheap nor expensive: it does not exist.
Where the wine towns are, and how far apart
Read the map by distance, not by name. From Tbilisi, Telavi is about 60 km in a straight line and Sighnaghi about 95. The towns themselves are then 30 to 40 minutes apart: Sighnaghi to Gurjaani 40 minutes, Gurjaani to Kvareli 30. A group day from Tbilisi that reaches Sighnaghi and a cellar near Tsinandali has therefore spent a large part of its nine hours on the road. The 12 EUR days keep to the Sighnaghi side and share one minibus and one driver, which is how the price stays low.
| Town | Why tours stop | Time or distance | Cost at the door |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sighnaghi | Hilltop town with walls and 23 towers, views of the Alazani valley | Bodbe monastery is 3 km away | Walking is free |
| Telavi | Regional centre on the western side, base for Tsinandali and Napareuli | Marshrutka from Tbilisi 2 to 3 h | Bus fare 12 to 15 GEL |
| Tsinandali | Chavchavadze estate, museum and historic cellar | Close to Telavi on the map | Ticket 10 GEL, tasting 35 GEL (trade site) |
| Kvareli | Khareba winery in a former Soviet bomb shelter, 4.1 km of tunnel | 30 min from Gurjaani | Tour about 35 GEL on one site, packages 3 to 95 GEL on another |
| Gurjaani | Appellation town between Sighnaghi and Kvareli | 40 min from Sighnaghi | Varies by cellar |
Bodbe and Sighnaghi: the stop every group day makes
Almost every group day includes Bodbe Monastery, three kilometres from Sighnaghi. The listings describe it as the burial place of St Nino, who converted Georgia to Christianity in the fourth century, and say the complex has been a nunnery since 1889. The walls of Sighnaghi, with 23 towers, date from the 18th century.
One practical note from the 35 EUR group listing: nobody enters a church in shorts, and women need to cover their heads. Bring something. Bring cash too: on that listing the bakery tasting, at 3 GEL, and lunch are extras.
By marshrutka, taxi or tour
| Option | Price | Time | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marshrutka to Telavi | 12 to 15 GEL | 2 to 3 h | A seat to the town. Departures from Ortachala station, 8:20 to 17:00 |
| Marshrutka to Sighnaghi | About 15 GEL | 2 to 2.5 h | Six departures from Samgori: 9:00, 11:00, 13:00, 15:00, 17:00 and 18:00 |
| Shared taxi | 20 to 30 GEL | Not stated | To the town, not to a cellar |
| Group day tour | 12 to 35 EUR | 9 to 10 h | Transport, a guide, two cellars, 7 to 10 tastings. Food often extra |
| Private day tour | 54 to 269 EUR | 7 to 12 h | A driver, a guide, lunch on many listings |
Wander-Lush is explicit that there is no public transport to the individual cellars. A marshrutka gets you to Telavi or Sighnaghi, and the walk to a wine producer is yours. If you want to taste, you need a taxi, a tour, or a hired driver, and a legal limit that car rental guides give as 0.3 per mille. Check it before you pick up a car.
The Telavi side: Tsinandali and the royal citadel at Gremi
The other half of Kakheti is on the road to Telavi. Tsinandali was the estate of Alexander Chavchavadze, described by the national tourism site as the first to bottle wine in the European manner. Its historic cellar holds more than 16,000 bottles, among them Saperavi from 1841. Trade sites quote 10 GEL for the museum ticket and 35 GEL for a tasting.
Nearby stands the fortified complex of Gremi, the old seat of the Kakhetian kings. None of the listings we opened stops there, so it is one to ask a private guide about.
Dates to see the landmarks by
What the listings and the public registers say, from the fourth century to the appellations.
The origins
4th century
St Nino at Bodbe
The monastery near Sighnaghi marks the burial place of the saint who, in tradition, converted Georgia.
6th century
David Gareja
A cave monastery in the dry hills of Sagarejo, carved into the rock, added to some private itineraries.
The growth
18th century
Sighnaghi's walls
A defensive circuit with 23 towers, today the town's main sight.
1841

The oldest date in the estate's collection of more than 16,000 bottles.

What a day in Kakheti costs at the cellar door
The prices in lari do not agree from one source to the next. Wander-Lush quotes degustations at 10 to 70 GEL, 20 GEL at Kindzmarauli and about 35 GEL for the Khareba tour, while another site lists Khareba entrances at 3 to 10 GEL and packages up to 95. The gap is real: the tunnel sells an entrance, a tasting of a few wines, and a package with food, and sites quote whichever they saw. Treat each figure as a range. Cash is advisable.
Compare that to the tour price. The cheapest day trip is 12 EUR and includes the bus, the guide and several tastings. At the bottom of the quoted range, 10 GEL, a tasting costs less than the marshrutka fare to Telavi. You pay for the distance, and the tasting is almost incidental, which is why Kakheti is a bargain for a first-timer and a less clear one for someone who already has a driver.
On a 12 EUR day you are buying the road and the guide. The wine is the rounding error.

Questions about Kakheti wine tours
How far is Kakheti from Tbilisi?
Telavi is about 60 km east of Tbilisi in a straight line, and Sighnaghi about 95. By marshrutka the journey takes 2 to 3 hours to Telavi and 2 to 2.5 to Sighnaghi, according to Wander-Lush in July 2026.
How much does a Kakheti wine tour cost?
Day trips from Tbilisi cost 12 to 180 EUR with a median of 21.3. Private tours cost 54 to 269 EUR with a median of 106.9. Nothing in the day-trip category costs between 35 and 85 EUR.
Can I visit Kakheti without a tour?
You can reach Telavi or Sighnaghi by bus, but not the cellars. A taxi, a driver or a tour is needed for the tasting itself. Shared taxis are quoted at 20 to 30 GEL.
When is the best time to go?
September and October, during the harvest, known as rtveli. Trade sites put it then; the listings we opened run in all weather. Dates move each year, so no tour advertises a fixed day.
Is it safe to drive after a tasting?
Car rental guides report 0.3 per mille as the legal limit, and the cheaper group tours include transport, so nobody has to drive. Confirm the current limit, and do not treat a flight of tastings as one glass.
Where does the Georgian wine come from?
From Kakheti, for most of what you taste on a tour. Tsinandali, Mukuzani and Kindzmarauli are Kakheti appellations. Khvanchkara is from Racha, which no listing on this site visits.
