Sicily wine tours: the Etna side of the island

Twenty tours, all on one volcano, from 58 to 346 EUR. Sicily's two denominations, the three slopes of Etna and the distances from Taormina, Catania and Messina.

Sicily wine tours, on this site, are Etna wine tours. All 20 listings climb the same mountain, and nearly all collect on the Taormina coast, in Catania or at the cruise terminal in Messina; nothing leaves from Palermo, Syracuse or the west of the island. That makes Sicily the dearest region in the catalogue, with a median of 250 EUR against 95 in Campania, because the typical listing is a six-hour day with pickup included. Under the tours sits a bigger wine map than the catalogue shows. This page covers it: the island's two denominations, the three sides of the volcano, the hubs and their distances. What the 20 tours sell, and how to choose between them, is on the Etna wine tours page.

Two denominations matter for reading the rest of the page: DOC Sicilia, from 2011, which covers the whole island, and DOC Etna, from 1968, which covers one volcano. Distances are straight lines between the hubs and the places named in the listings, so a road is always longer. Where a figure comes from a secondary source, the text says so.

One caution on the numbers. With 20 listings from 17 operators, and the largest operator holding 21% of the reviews, a rating of 4.86 summarises a small sample. Read it as a comparison with Campania's 4.92, not as a verdict on Sicilian wine tours.

Sicily is an island of wine, and the catalogue covers one mountain

Two denominations frame the island. DOC Sicilia was recognised on 22 November 2011 and its consortium constituted on 12 June 2012; it is the umbrella that lets wines from anywhere on the island carry one name, and the consortium counts about 3,000 growers. DOC Etna is 43 years older. It dates to 1968, according to reference sources, and was the first DOC in Sicily. Everything the catalogue sells sits inside the smaller one.

The west of the island, with Marsala and Trapani, Palermo as a hub and the small islands, has no listing here. That is a gap in the catalogue, not a verdict on the wine, and it is why this page can talk about Sicily and show one volcano on the map.

Two hubs and a cruise port

Taormina is where most people sleep and where most tours start. Its coast, from Letojanni to Mazzarò and Giardini Naxos, fills the pickup lists, and Taormina appears in five listing titles. Catania is the second hub, named in two titles, one of them for cruise passengers. Messina is the third, with two private days that collect at its cruise terminal.

The mountain sits between them. Linguaglossa, on the north slope, is 13 km from Taormina in a straight line, and the car park at Rifugio Sapienza is 23 km from Catania.

Read the map as three sides of one cone. On the north are Castiglione di Sicilia, Linguaglossa and Randazzo, where most of the winery stops in the listings are. On the east are Zafferana Etnea and Santa Venerina, where five itineraries name the Oro d'Etna honey producer as a stop before the wine, and Milo, the only commune allowed to use the name Etna Bianco Superiore. On the south, the listings stop for craters and caves rather than cellars: Nicolosi and Rifugio Sapienza, Monte Vetore above Belpasso. The consortium's own map has grown from 133 to 142 contrade, the named vineyard districts.

What the Etna denomination says

DOC Etna covers the north, east and south slopes, across 19 communes, with vines at roughly 450 to 1,100 m above sea level (Wikipedia figures; the consortium's pages were not reachable). The red is Nerello Mascalese, at least 80%, with Nerello Cappuccio up to 20%. The white is Carricante, at least 60%, with Catarratto up to 40%, and Etna Bianco Superiore is Carricante at 80% or more, from Milo only. One listing calls Nerello Mascalese and Carricante the king and queen of Etna, which is a fair summary of who matters.

On most Etna itineraries the vines and the craters are about a thousand metres apart.

That is worth holding on to when reading the listings. The wineries sit at 450 to 1,100 m. The crater stops the tours add sit at about 1,700 m for the Sartorius craters and 2,000 m at Rifugio Sapienza. The two are different parts of the day, with different conditions.

Etna from the coast

From Taormina, Etna is a shape on the horizon that changes with the light and the weather. It is also an active volcano, and no page of ours can tell you what it is doing this week.

The Osservatorio Etneo of the INGV publishes a monitoring bulletin every week. Read the latest on the INGV Catania site before you book, and again before you leave. Which parts of a tour the volcano can change, and which it cannot, is explained on the Etna wine tours page.

Chart comparing median wine tour prices across the regions of Italy, with Sicily at 250 EUR

Why Sicily is the dear end of Italy

Sicily's median is 250 EUR, Campania's 95. Nine of the 20 cost more than 250, and the cheapest is 58. The middle half of Sicily's listings runs from 125 to 292 EUR, a range Campania's never reaches. The reason is format, not wine: 16 of the 20 collect you, 11 are private, and the median listing takes six hours.

What each of those choices adds to the price is worked out on the Etna page.

When to go, as far as we can source it

Etna's harvest is late for Sicily, running from September into October and later on the higher slopes, according to reference sources. No listing promises harvest access. In winter, one listing warns that its trek may run at lower altitudes if ice or snow is on the roads, which tells you the crater stops are the seasonal part of the day and the tasting is not. We found no sourced month-by-month table for Etna, so this page has no season grid.

Getting around Etna without a car

The railway that circles the mountain, the Circumetnea, has three lines out of Catania Borgo, to Paternò and to Randazzo, and no direct train between Catania Borgo and Randazzo (Wikipedia; the operator's fare page was not checked). A winery that takes visitors, such as Benanti at Viagrande, opens every day except Monday and asks for a reservation. Neither helps much if the goal is a cellar high on a slope. The listings solve it by collecting you: 16 of the 20 include pickup.

Questions about wine tours in Sicily

Are there Sicily wine tours outside Etna?

Not in this catalogue. All 20 listings are on Etna, and nothing covers Marsala, Trapani or a Palermo departure yet. If that changes, the new tours will appear on this page before anywhere else.

How far is Etna from Taormina and Catania?

In a straight line, the north-slope town of Linguaglossa is 13 km from Taormina, and the crater car park at Rifugio Sapienza is 31 km from Taormina and 23 km from Catania. Taormina to Catania is 43 km. Real road times are longer, and mountain roads slow further.

Is Taormina a good base for Etna wine?

It gives you the north slope, 13 km to Linguaglossa, and the coast. Catania gives you the south and east, 21 to 23 km to Zafferana and Rifugio Sapienza. Taormina appears in five listing titles and Catania in two, and whichever you choose, 16 of the 20 collect you.

Do I need to book Etna tastings in advance?

Yes, treat it that way. Every listing is booked through its page, and at least one, the small-group winery day from Taormina with 69 reviews, carries a likely-to-sell-out flag. Wineries that accept direct visitors, such as Benanti at Viagrande, ask for a reservation.

Which side of Etna has the wineries?

All three sides have them, but the north-slope towns of Linguaglossa, Castiglione di Sicilia and Randazzo appear most in the listings, with Santa Venerina on the east. On the south slope the listings stop for craters and caves more than for cellars.

What is the difference between DOC Sicilia and DOC Etna?

DOC Sicilia, recognised in 2011, covers the whole island. DOC Etna, from 1968, is a single zone around the volcano with its own rules: Nerello Mascalese and Carricante lead, and the vines grow at roughly 450 to 1,100 m.

Is Etna wine only red?

No. Carricante makes the whites, and Etna Bianco Superiore, at least 80% Carricante, can only come from Milo. The red, Nerello Mascalese, is the better known of the two.
