Waiheke Island wine tours from Auckland: 20 compared
Twenty tours, median 155 EUR, and the ferry is extra on the ones we read: NZ$65 at peak, NZ$48.50 if you leave Auckland after 1 pm.
Five of the six Waiheke tours we opened say the same thing in their small print: the ferry is not included. With the tour at a median of 155 EUR, the crossing adds NZ$65 for a peak return on Fullers360, so the price on the card is not the price of the day. Waiheke Island wine tours are a day out from Auckland, about 35 to 40 minutes across the Hauraki Gulf, and this page is built around the thing every listing leaves to you: the boat. It sorts the ferry fares by time of day, shows which sailing each operator's guide actually meets, explains why lunch splits the 20 tours into two price ranges that do not overlap, and says plainly which of the "private" tours is not private.
Prices are per person as listed on 30 September 2026. Ferry fares come from the Fullers360 fare page read on the same day. The wider New Zealand picture, including Marlborough, is on the New Zealand page; this one stays on the island.

The ferry is not in the price
Fullers360 leaves from Downtown Ferry Terminal, Pier 11 or 12, for Matiatia on Waiheke. The fare page we read lists a peak walk-up return for an adult at NZ$65 and an off-peak return at NZ$48.50. Off-peak means leaving Auckland from 1 pm or leaving Waiheke from 7 pm. A single at peak time is NZ$32.50. The page carries an odd validity date, 12 October 2026, which is in the future; treat the figures as the fares on the day we read them, and check the operator before you pay.
| Fare | Adult price | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Single, peak | NZ$32.50 | Any peak sailing |
| Return, peak (walk-up) | NZ$65 | Leaving Auckland before 1 pm |
| Return, off-peak | NZ$48.50 | Leaving Auckland from 1 pm, or Waiheke from 7 pm |
The off-peak return is 25% cheaper, but every morning tour leaves on a peak sailing. Only a late-start tour, like the 3.5-hour sunset listing at 165 EUR, can use the lower fare on the way out. One operator, Island Direct, runs a competing ferry that two guides mention by name; we did not read its fares.
Leaving from Auckland
The city in this photograph is where the day starts. The ferry crosses the Hauraki Gulf in about 35 to 40 minutes: the island's tourism board says 35, other sources 40, and one operator's meeting time of 10:40 for the 10:00 sailing agrees with the longer figure. The catch is weather. One operator warns that tours may be cancelled if the ferries are not running in extreme weather, in which case you are offered another date or a refund.
The other catch is that the ferry is yours to book. Five operators we read tell you to buy the ticket separately, and four of them name a sailing.
Which ferry does your tour meet?
| Listing | You take | Back on the mainland |
|---|---|---|
| Premium wine tasting, max 11 (Waiheke Island Wine Tours) | Fullers 9:00 walk-up or Island Direct 9:15; queue by 8:30 | Transfer to the terminal at 3:45 pm, or later if you stay |
| Zeitgeist small group (Waivino Tours) | Island Direct 9:15; the 10:00 will not get you there in time | Island Direct 4:20 pm |
| Scenic tour, 4 vineyards (Waiheke Wine Tours Ltd) | The 10:00 ferry; guide waits at Pier 2, Matiatia | Bus to the ferry at 3:40 pm; ferries run until midnight |
| The Essence of Waiheke (Ananda Tours) | Fullers 10:00; meet at Matiatia 10:30 if staying on the island | To the ferry after lunch |
| Premium wine tour with tastings (ENJOI NZ) | Look for the ENJOI sign off the ferry at 10:40 | Ask the driver if you want to stay on |
Three different sailings in five listings. If you buy the wrong ferry, you miss your tour, and one guide says so in capital letters. It costs nothing to read the meeting-point box before you book the boat.
Why lunch splits the 20 tours in two
On the chart most of the dots sit in a band from 94 to 219 EUR at five or six hours, and the length tells you nothing. Lunch does. The three listings whose notes say lunch is not included cost 94 to 137 EUR. The six that include lunch, by their title or their inclusions, cost 140 to 183 EUR. The two ranges do not overlap. The flags are not reliable, since one listing the data marks as including lunch lists it as not included, so read the inclusions list, and another contradicts itself, saying lunch is included in one place and at your own expense in another.
One of the three diamonds is not what it seems. The 90 EUR, 12-hour dot at the bottom right is a Fullers360 package for up to nine people that bundles lunch at Batch Winery with a hop-on, hop-off bus pass and says ferry travel is included. It is a day pass, not a private tour. The two real private tours are 178 and 486 EUR, and the listings do not say whether those prices are per person.
The cheapest thing on the list is a day pass that includes the ferry. The dearest is a private food-and-wine day at 486 EUR. Between them, whether lunch is in the price explains most of the gap.
What the island makes
New Zealand Winegrowers' Auckland page describes Waiheke as warm, dry and maritime, known for Cabernet blends, with Syrah, Chardonnay, Montepulciano, Petit Verdot, Viognier and Pinot Gris now in the mix. One operator puts the number of cellar doors at 23; we have no official count. Goldwater Estate is usually named among the first vineyards, in the late 1970s, and Mudbrick, which appears on the big listings, dates its first planting and café to 1995, after a project that began in 1992. The names that recur across the listings we read are Cable Bay, Batch, Stonyridge, Mudbrick, Te Motu and Kennedy Point, and the operators say which venues you visit may change on the day.
Staying on after the tour
The water in this photograph is the Hauraki Gulf, seen from the Auckland shore. One listing points out that the ferries run right up until midnight, and the walk from the last vineyard to the terminal is about 15 minutes, so the tour need not end your day. Check cellar hours first: Stonyridge opens daily from 11:00, closes at 16:00 Monday to Friday and Sunday and at 17:00 on Saturday, and advises booking although it accepts walk-ins, according to its site.
If you want lunch on the island, book it yourself: one operator suggests reserving in the busy summer months and names Mudbrick Archive at 2:00 pm, Oyster Inn, Fenice or Vino Vino at 2:15.
Who runs Waiheke's tours
Three operators hold two-thirds of the reviews. Waiheke Island Wine Tours holds 35% with two listings, Waiheke Wine Tours Ltd holds 16% with three and Ananda Tours holds 14% with three. The first two have almost the same name and are different companies, which matters when you compare reviews. Group sizes vary from small to large: one listing is capped at 9, five titles say "max 11", some allow 15 and one allows 18. Four of the five listings we read set a minimum age of 18. One listing even changes vehicle with the season: a minivan off-peak, a bus at peak, and a double-decker option that comes with a charcuterie board. Ask which one you will get.

Questions about Waiheke wine tours
Is the ferry included in a Waiheke wine tour?
In most, no. All five tours we read in full exclude it: the most reviewed, the ENJOI one, the 4-vineyard bus day, the Essence of Waiheke and Zeitgeist. A Fullers360 package at 90 EUR says ferry travel is included. Read the "not included" list before you buy the boat.
How long is the ferry from Auckland?
About 35 to 40 minutes from Downtown Ferry Terminal to Matiatia. The island's tourism board gives 35. Allow time before sailing: one operator tells you to be in line by 8:30 for the 9:00 departure.
Can I visit Waiheke wineries without a tour?
Yes. The tourism board lists buses, taxis, hire cars, shuttles and scooters, and Stonyridge accepts walk-ins. The 90 EUR Fullers360 package includes a hop-on, hop-off bus pass. A tour saves planning; it is not the only way.
What is the cheapest way to do it?
The 90 EUR Fullers360 day pass, rated 4.1 on 116 reviews, the lowest rating on the page. After it come the 94 and 99 EUR tours without lunch. Add the ferry to each and the gap narrows.
Can I bring children?
Mostly no. Four of the five listings we read set a minimum age of 18, and one says it is not suitable for children. Check each listing; we did not read all 20.
What if the weather is bad?
Ferries can be cancelled in extreme weather, and one operator says tours are cancelled with them, with an alternative date or a refund. Dress for a cool, breezy crossing in any case.
Heading to the South Island?
Marlborough has 20 tours at a median of 124 EUR, based at Blenheim and Picton.
