Greek Wine Tours: 20 Tours, All on Santorini

The highest rating of 13 countries, 4.97, belongs to 20 tours on one island, and two operators hold 75% of the reviews.

Greece has the highest rating of the 13 countries on this site, 4.97, and the smallest catalogue: 20 tours, all of them on Santorini. The two facts are linked. Two operators hold 75% of the 5,675 reviews, so the national score is the score of two companies on one island. This page is about Greek wine as a whole, which the tours do not cover. It gives the size of the vineyard, the grapes that carry the country, a way to read a Greek label, the drink-driving rule, and a comparison with the other countries by price, length and size. The tours themselves, with their prices and inclusions, are on the Santorini page.

Tour figures were read from the listings on 30 September 2026. National production figures are Wines of Greece's 2020 and 2021 numbers. Nothing here promises a tour outside Santorini: we list none, and the page says so where it matters.

Greek wine tours: one island, and what that means

Every Greek wine tour we sell leaves from Santorini. There is nothing in Nemea, Naoussa or Crete, three places with serious wine and cellar doors, and the gap is about what travellers can book, not about Greek wine. Treat the country page as a map with one dot on it. The dot is well stocked: twenty tours, fourteen operators, prices that stay inside a tight band of 150 to 200 EUR for the middle half. That is the second narrowest spread of the 13 countries, after Canada.

A country with one destination should not borrow the destination's content, so the price, the inclusions and the operators are on the Santorini page. Here the question is different: what sits behind the island, and how does Greece compare with everywhere else?

Bunch of white wine grapes hanging from a vine with a blue sea behind

A country of small growers

The figures Wines of Greece publishes for 2020 and 2021 describe a country that is large in acreage and small in output. About 64,000 hectares of vines, some 180,000 growers and more than 1,200 wineries. Production was 2.3 million hectolitres in 2020 and 1.7 million in 2021. Around 90% of the vineyards are planted to native varieties, which is the single most distinctive number on the list.

The photo shows white grapes against the sea, which is how much of Greece looks. It also hides a second figure. In 2021 only 9.5% of production carried a PDO and 23.5% an IGP, so about a third of Greek wine had a geographical label. The other two thirds is wine you drink at the taverna without a denomination on the bottle.

Reading a Greek label: PDO, IGP and four names to know

A Greek bottle with a PDO on the label (protected designation of origin) follows the strictest rules: a named area, named grapes, yield and ageing limits. An IGP (protected geographical indication) allows a wider area and a freer blend. Santorini is a PDO, recognised in 1971 and covering Santorini and Thirasia. For the dry white, Wines of Greece gives a minimum of 85% Assyrtiko. Wines made outside the PDO but on the Cyclades can be labelled IGP Cyclades.

Three Greek names will get you through a wine list: assyrtiko for the white of the islands, xinomavro for the red of the north, agiorgitiko for the red of the south.
Four Greek wine names and what this site offers for each. Only Santorini has tours here.

The four names are a starting point. We have not built pages for the three without tours, and we quote no hectares or production for them.

How Greece compares with the other 12 countries

Chart of the median wine tour price in each of the 13 countries on this site, Greece highlighted
Median price of a wine tour in each country, with the middle half of listings. Greece, at 173 EUR, is fourth highest of 13 and has the second narrowest spread. · Wine Tours Editorial, from the prices of the tours listed on this site

The chart puts Greece between the expensive group (the USA and Argentina at 242 EUR, France at 232) and the crowd of mid-priced countries around 120 to 145. Two things stand out. The Greek bar is short, 150 to 200 EUR. And the number of tours behind it is the smallest: 20, against 300 in Italy and 211 in France.

Spain93110 EUR4.866 hours44%
France211232 EUR4.857 hours46%
Georgia4082 EUR4.899 hours65%

Greece has the highest hotel pickup share, 95%, and ties with Canada for the shortest day, at four hours. That is the shape of an island product: a short drive between wineries and a pickup at the hotel. Compare Italy, where 28% of the tours offer pickup and the median day is 5.5 hours, or Georgia, where the day is nine hours and the price is less than half. The country pages for Portugal, Italy, Spain and Georgia take the same measures region by region.

The dearest hour in wine tourism on this site

Divide each country's median price by its median length and Greece comes out first, ahead of the USA. It is a crude measure, a ratio of two medians, but it shows what the short island day costs per hour. Greece: about 43 EUR an hour. The USA: 40. Argentina: 35. France: 33. Italy: 26. Spain: 18. Portugal: 17. Georgia: 9.

The figure says more about format than about value. A four-hour tour with hotel pickup, a guide and a driver is priced like a private half day, while a nine-hour Georgian day includes a long road. If you want the most wine for an hour of your time, Greece is not the cheapest place to find it. If you want a neat afternoon, it may be the tidiest.

A rating of 4.97 and the two companies behind it

Santorini Day Tours has 42% of the reviews and My Santorini Tour 33%. Their two best tours, both rated 5.0, carry 3,517 of the 5,675 reviews, or 62%. So the highest rating on the site belongs to two tours. It is high partly because so many guests reviewed them, and partly because a rating with thousands of votes behind it does not swing. It does not prove that Greece makes better wine tours than Australia, where the same measure is 4.91 over 99 tours and 32,114 reviews.

Greek wine in four dates

From the evidence of vines on Santorini to the figures the trade publishes now.

The origins

  1. About 1600 BC

    The Minoan eruption buries Akrotiri

Seeds and jars found there are part of the evidence for vines. Wines of Greece says cultivation goes back at least 3,500 years.

The growth

  1. 1971

    PDO Santorini is recognised

The first denomination on this page, covering Santorini and Thirasia.

Today

  1. 2021

A third of production carries a PDO or IGP

The trade's figures: 9.5% PDO, 23.5% IGP, from a harvest of 1.7 million hectolitres.

  2. Today

    Twenty tours, one island

Every tour we sell in Greece leaves from Santorini.

The Greek rule for drinking and driving

Greece's legal limit for drivers is 0.5 g/l of blood alcohol, and 0.2 g/l for new drivers and professional drivers. Nineteen of the twenty Santorini tours offer hotel pickup, and on one of them it costs extra. That makes hiring a car for a tasting day a poor trade. We have not checked ferry or bus timetables and do not quote them.

Questions about Greek wine tours

Are there wine tours anywhere in Greece besides Santorini?

Not on this site. Every Greek tour we sell leaves from Santorini. Nemea, Naoussa and Crete make wine and welcome visitors, but we list no tours there and quote no figures for them.

What is assyrtiko?

The white grape of Santorini. The PDO for the dry white asks for at least 85% Assyrtiko, according to Wines of Greece, with Athiri and Aidani as the rest. It is also the main grape of the island's Vinsanto, a sweet wine.

Are Greek wine tours expensive?

They sit in the upper half: the median is 173 EUR, fourth highest of 13 countries, against 82 EUR in Georgia and 110 in Spain. The price buys a short day, four hours at the median, with pickup at the hotel.

Does Greece grow only local grapes?

Mostly. About 90% of Greece's vineyards are planted with native varieties, according to Wines of Greece. International grapes appear too: one of the six wines poured at a Santorini lunch is a Sauvignon Blanc.

Can I drive between wineries?

You may, but the limit is 0.5 g/l, or 0.2 g/l for new and professional drivers, and a tasting day adds up quickly. The Santorini tours include hotel pickup on 19 of 20 listings.

How reliable is the 4.97 rating?

It is accurate as an average and narrow as evidence. Two operators account for 75% of the reviews, and two tours for 62%. Read the Santorini page before you treat it as a national score.
