Yarra Valley Wine Tours from Melbourne
Twenty day trips from 62 to 1,186 EUR, and two 81 EUR days that hold 63% of the reviews.
Two listings hold 63% of all the reviews in the Yarra Valley, and they are the same day sold by two companies: eight hours from Melbourne for 81 EUR, with no lunch, at a mix of wineries, a gin distillery and a chocolate room. That is the fact to hold on to with Yarra Valley wine tours from Melbourne. The valley's 4.97 rating, the highest of our four Australian regions, is largely the rating of those two days and one other operator, and this page reads the twenty listings with that in mind: what the 81 EUR ticket includes, what you pay on top, and what the 298 to 1,186 EUR private options change.
It is a short drive, about an hour from the city centre, and only 7 of the 20 listings offer hotel pickup. The others meet at a city-centre point, which is the detail most people miss. The page also sorts the listings into six formats in a table, names the three operators behind 85% of the reviews, and covers the 298 to 1,186 EUR private options, which are priced for a party rather than a seat. Numbers were read on 30 September 2026, and the history near the end separates the dates we could source from the ones that are a winery's own account.

What the 81 EUR listing is
The most reviewed Yarra listing, with 5,533 reviews at a perfect 5.0, is described by its operator as 'the most social, flexible and laid-back way to spend a day in the Yarra Valley'. The itinerary we read is precise. Tastings are included at four venues: two wineries, a gin distillery, and a private 25-minute chocolate tasting of 10 to 12 chocolates. Each stop offers choices and the guide splits the group, so one person can take the wine and another the beer.
Wine is half the day. Lunch is not included: the listing says to order and pay separately at a winery restaurant, which it puts at about A$25 to 35. And the pickup is not a hotel. The group meets at a bus stop across from the Hotel Windsor on Spring Street, in East Melbourne, by 8:45, and the bus is back between 4:50 and 5:15.

Six of twenty titles name something other than wine
Six of the twenty titles name gin, whisky, beer, cider or chocolate next to wine. That is not a flaw, since the valley has a gin distillery, a chocolaterie and a craft brewery within a short drive of its cellar doors, all on the 81 EUR itinerary, and plenty of people want exactly that. But it changes how you should read the score. If you want a day that is mostly wine, look for the listings that state the number of wineries and do not list a fourth stop.
Count the wineries in the itinerary, not the stars on the listing.
The stops sit within a few kilometres
The wine towns on the map are Healesville, Yarra Glen, Coldstream, Lilydale and Dixons Creek. On the 81 EUR itinerary the stops fall in three of them: St Huberts and Domaine Chandon on the Maroondah Highway at Coldstream, Four Pillars gin and a small winery at Healesville, and the chocolaterie at Yarra Glen.
The drive out is about 60 minutes, which the regional tourism body describes as less than an hour from Melbourne. So a full day is two hours of road and six of stops, and the stops are close enough that nobody in a group spends long on a bus between them.
Three operators, 85% of the reviews
Fourteen operators sell the twenty listings, yet three of them account for 85% of the reviews. Teepee Tours has 33% across two listings, Red Carpet Wine Tours 30% with one, and Dancing Kangaroo Tours 22% with two. Take the most reviewed listing out and the rest of the page still rates 4.95. The valley is not hiding poor days behind good ones.
It does mean the small operators rely on you reading their itineraries. A private brunch tour with 10 reviews and a 5.0 is probably excellent, but it is ten people's opinion.
On the chart the cluster is obvious: most dots sit between 62 and 135 EUR at seven to eight and a half hours. The outliers are the ones that change the category, a 1,186 EUR helicopter flight to lunch at De Bortoli and a 530 EUR night-time private tour with dinner.
Lunch, pickup and the small print
Lunch is included in 12 of the 20 listings. Where it is not, as on the 81 EUR days, the listing says so, but it is easy to read past. Only 7 of the 20 offer hotel pickup, 35%. Compare Barossa, where 90% do. The Yarra listing we read uses a fixed meeting point above Parliament Station, in the free tram zone, which works if you are staying in the centre and less well if you are not.
The group size on the 81 EUR itinerary is usually 10 to 20, with a 24-seat bus or a 13-seat van, and a maximum of 22 on the main bus. Children are welcome on the public group tours at the full adult price, and the listing is not wheelchair accessible.
The vines turn in autumn
The photograph shows the valley in autumn, with yellow leaves running along the rows, taken near Yarra Glen. Picking in the Yarra Valley usually runs from February to April, so the weeks when the vines are heaviest and the weeks when they are prettiest nearly overlap.
That is the practical advice for the season: March to May is when the valley looks most like the photographs. Whatever the month, the operator of the 81 EUR day advises comfortable clothes and a layer, because mornings in the valley can be cool.
If wine is the point
Four listings call themselves a wine or winery tour without naming a spirit: the all-inclusive Wine and Winery Tour at 116 EUR, the two-course-lunch Winery Tour at 135 EUR, the Five Star Experience at 135 EUR and a plain Yarra Valley Wine Tour at 116 EUR. The first of them has 1,431 reviews, the most of the four, and it rates 4.7, while the four biggest listings ahead of it all rate 5.0. The gap may say more about what visitors want from a day out than about the wine.
A private winery tour with tastings costs 502 EUR for the party. Whichever you choose, ask how many wineries are named and how long is spent at each, because a tasting of five to six wines per venue is the pattern on the day we read, and time at the table is what a wine-first day sells.
Private tours: priced for the group
The six private listings have a median of 516 EUR and start at 298 EUR. They include a tailored wine journey at 298, a private tour with Champagne brunch at 426, a private winery tour at 502, a night tour with wine, whisky and dinner at 530 EUR, a wine and wildlife day at 702 EUR and the helicopter at 1,186 EUR. The price covers the vehicle or aircraft for your party, so the cost per person falls as the group fills the seats. A couple pays the whole fee.

Questions about Yarra Valley wine tours
How far is the Yarra Valley from Melbourne?
About an hour by road. The 81 EUR itinerary lists a 60-minute drive from the city into the valley. A full day is eight hours including both drives.
Is lunch included?
On 12 of the 20 listings it is. On the two most reviewed, at 81 EUR, it is not: you order at a winery restaurant and pay separately, which the operator puts at about A$25 to 35.
Is hotel pickup included?
Only for 7 of 20. The most reviewed day meets at a bus stop in East Melbourne by 8:45. Check the meeting point before booking if your hotel is outside the centre.
Is the 81 EUR tour really a wine tour?
Wine is half of it. The itinerary has two wineries, a gin distillery and a chocolate tasting, with options to swap stops. If you want mostly wine, pick a listing that names the wineries and skips the spirits.
Can I visit Domaine Chandon?
It is an option on the 81 EUR itinerary as a lunch or lounge stop. The operator notes it serves only sparkling wine and that the menu is lighter and pricier than the alternative, so say in advance if you want it.
Are kangaroos part of the tour?
Two of the three afternoon and sunset listings at 122 EUR name them in the title. Wildlife is not promised on the other days.
