Marlborough wine tours from Blenheim and Picton
Twenty tours from 66 to 201 EUR, median 123.5. The cheapest is a bus ticket for cruise passengers, and the regional festival is on pause.
The cheapest Marlborough wine tour is a bus ticket. It costs 66 EUR, it is rated 4.0, the lowest on the page, tastings and food are extra, and it is sold to cruise-ship passengers only. That sets the tone for a region where Sauvignon Blanc is the headline and the logistics of arriving, by road to Blenheim or by ship to Picton, decide what kind of day you get. There are 20 tours here, priced from 66 to 201 EUR with a median of 123.5, and half of them are half days. Below you will find where the tours start, what a half day and a full day cost, what the wine is, why the regional festival is not something to plan around, and who runs the tours.
Prices are per person as listed on 30 September 2026. Only one tour is flagged private, at 201 EUR, and we did not check whether that is per person or per vehicle. The national context, with the comparison to Waiheke, is on the New Zealand page; this one stays in the Wairau.

Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
Two bases, one valley
Measured on our map in a straight line, Picton and Blenheim are about 25 km apart. Renwick, a wine village, is roughly 10 km west of Blenheim, and Seddon, the southern outpost, about 20 km south-east of it. Havelock lies west of Picton, at the head of another inlet. The consequence is simple: a tour from Blenheim is among the vines within minutes, a tour from Picton spends its first stretch on the road, and the hop-on bus route shows the cellar doors clustering around Rapaura and Renwick.
| Starts from | Listings | Price (EUR) | Median | Reviews |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Picton (title names Picton or a shore excursion) | 7 | 66 to 165 | 140 | 700 |
| Blenheim (title names Blenheim) | 2 | 101 to 193 | 147 | 116 |
| Not named in the title | 11 | 74 to 201 | 112 | 1,720 |
Picton starts cost more, a median of 140 EUR against 112 for the listings that name neither town, and the reason is that the Picton group is the shore-excursion group: four listings are built for cruise passengers and a fifth, at 165 EUR, leaves from the Port of Picton. Seven Picton tours hold 28% of the reviews, so the ship-day buyer shapes the page's ratings more than the Blenheim visitor does.
The 66 EUR ticket
The cheapest listing is a hop-on, hop-off bus. "Cruise ship only ticket", says the description in capitals, and non-cruise travellers are asked to ring the operator. The bus calls at 25 stops or so across the region, cellar doors such as Saint Clair, Hunter's, Wither Hills, Cloudy Bay, Jackson Estate and Spy Valley among them, plus a brewery, a cafe, an aviation museum and a chocolate factory. What it includes is an air-conditioned bus and a driver. Tastings and food are not included. It is rated 4.0 from 105 reviews.
At 66 EUR you are buying a seat, not a tasting. The wine is what you pay for at each stop.
Picton, the Sounds and a ship's timetable
Picton sits at the head of the Marlborough Sounds, the drowned valleys in the photograph, and ferries from Wellington dock there as well as cruise ships. Four listings are excursions for ship passengers, from 66 to 153 EUR: the 66 EUR bus, a 132 EUR and a 145 EUR guided tour, and a 153 EUR shore excursion of four hours. A fifth listing, at 165 EUR, collects you at the Port of Picton.
For a ship day the only timetable that matters is the gangway. Ask the operator when you are back on the dock and what happens if traffic delays you; the listing we read does not spell that out.
Half day or full day
The chart splits the region into two bands, and the table above shows who sits where. Ten half days, at three to four and a half hours, cost a median of 102.5 EUR; ten full days, at five and a half to seven hours, a median of 137.5 EUR. That is 34% more for roughly 50% more time, which makes the full day the better value per hour, but only if you want six hours of wine. The four-hour dots reach up to 165 EUR, because the shore excursions are priced like a ship day, not like a half day.

Sauvignon Blanc, and the dates around it
Marlborough has 32,191 hectares of vines, 73% of New Zealand's total, according to New Zealand Winegrowers' 2026 vineyard report. The regional body describes the climate as cool but very sunny, with low rainfall and well-drained soils. Sauvignon Blanc leads, with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and aromatic whites behind it. The Māori name of the main valley, Wairau, is given as "Kei puta te Wairau", the place with a hole in the cloud.
From a first planting to a region
Dates from Wikipedia's Marlborough entry; the regional body confirms only that the modern industry began in the 1980s.

Three sub-regions, three soils
The vines in this photograph are Marlborough's typical picture: flat rows and a line of dry hills behind. The region divides into the Wairau Valley, where river gravels dominate, the Southern Valleys, with clay soils, and the Awatere Valley to the south, the coolest of the three. The tours on this page stay in the Wairau, around Blenheim, Renwick and Rapaura; we found no listing that names the Awatere or the Southern Valleys in its title.
If you care which soil you are tasting, ask the operator which cellar doors the day includes. Few listings name them in the title.
The festival that is on pause
The regional wine body's events page, read on 30 September 2026, says the Marlborough Wine and Food Festival "is taking a pause" and gives no date for its return. Do not plan a trip around it, and be wary of any article that still calls it annual. Other dates on the same page: the Marlborough Wine Show runs from 10 August to 13 November 2026, and Sauvignon Blanc Day falls on the first Friday of May.
Who runs Marlborough's tours
Eleven operators share the 20 tours. Marlborough Wine Tours runs three and holds 31% of the reviews, including the most reviewed listing, Beyond the Vines, at 112 EUR and 478 reviews. Hop n Grape Tours has 18%, Jade Tours 13%, Discovery Wine Tours 11% and Sounds Connection 10%. The names overlap, with Marlborough Wine Tours and Marlborough Tour Company being two different companies. Check the operator line before you compare ratings.

Questions about Marlborough wine tours
Should I base myself in Blenheim or Picton?
Blenheim if you want the vines within minutes and a full day. Picton if you are arriving by ship or ferry or wish to be on the water as well. The two are roughly 25 km apart on our map, and the listings start from either.
Can I do a Marlborough wine tour from a cruise ship?
Yes. Four listings are shore excursions from Picton, from 66 to 153 EUR, and a fifth collects you at the Port of Picton for 165 EUR. The cheapest, a hop-on bus, is for cruise passengers only and does not include tastings.
Is lunch included?
Five listings are flagged as including lunch, but flags are not always right, as we found on Waiheke, so read the inclusions. The hop-on bus includes neither food nor tastings.
Is the Marlborough Wine and Food Festival on?
Not at the moment. The regional wine body's own events page says it is taking a pause and gives no return date. Treat any older mention of it as out of date.
Can I visit Cloudy Bay?
It is named as a stop on the hop-on bus, where the listing describes a raw bar with local oysters and its sparkling wine. Whether the other tours include it is not stated; the estate's own site asks for an age check and gave us nothing on tastings.
Can I cycle between cellars?
One listing combines a guided morning with a self-guided afternoon on bikes, 115 EUR for seven hours. It is the only one of its kind here. New Zealand's adult alcohol limit is reported as 50 mg per 100 ml, so pace the tasting.
Prefer an island to a valley?
Waiheke Island has 20 tours at a median of 155 EUR, a ferry away from Auckland.
