The day opens with a walk through the vines led by a winemaker or a local figure, and this is the moment for the curly questions and the vineyard photos. From there the tour moves through four to six wineries. Depending on what the group prefers, one stop can be a local brewery. More than 40 cellar doors are in reach, so if you have a favourite, say so and the guide will try to get you there. The focus is on New Zealand family-owned vineyards and wineries, with small boutique and organic producers also possible. Cloudy Bay, Fromm and Hans Herzog are not part of this tour. If Cloudy Bay is a must, the Gourmet Gold Tour or a private wine tour is the better booking. Lunch is at a vineyard restaurant and is paid for separately. There is also a chance to stop at the Makana chocolate shop.

What's included

  • Vineyard Lunch stop during the tour - lunch at your own cost
  • Air-conditioned vehicle
  • Free door-to-door collection and drop off from Blenheim/Renwick areas
  • All wine tasting fees

  1. Lawson’s Dry Hills

Lawson's Dry Hills is a winery built on grit, innovation and community. Fruit comes from several Marlborough valleys, which gives the wines range and a clear sense of place. The cellar door is lined with gold-medal trophies, and tastings are relaxed, often with reserve or limited release wines.

  2. Allan Scott Family Winemakers

A winery restaurant that is a regular stop for a relaxed gourmet lunch.

  3. DNA Brewery

For beer, cider or wine drinkers, the day can end at the local DNA brewery, with handcrafted, award-winning beers to taste. Anyone skipping the beer can try the award-winning Ant Moore wines.

  4. Framingham Wines

One of Marlborough's original wine families, known for a warm welcome and aromatic wines. Alongside Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, Framingham is noted for Riesling and Gewürztraminer, poured in a relaxed garden cellar door.

  5. Saint Clair Family Estate Vineyard Kitchen

Saint Clair Vineyard Kitchen is a well-loved winery restaurant at one of Marlborough's most awarded producers. Taste Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and aromatics among the vines, with the option of a lunch built on fresh seasonal produce, in the Wairau Valley.

  6. Makana Confections

At Makana Chocolate Factory visitors can watch handmade chocolates being made by traditional methods. Free samples are offered and boxes can be bought to take home. A relaxed, family-friendly change from wine.

  7. Picton

Picton is a harbour town at the top of the South Island, on the edge of Queen Charlotte Sound and the gateway to the Marlborough Sounds. It is a pickup point for this tour, popular with cruise visitors and ferry travellers from Wellington. The drive into wine country is short, and the day sets sheltered coast against sunny vine-covered valleys. Guests staying in Picton are driven through town, and the guide points out restaurants and places to visit.

  8. Blenheim

Blenheim sits in the sunny Wairau Valley, surrounded by more than 150 wineries in New Zealand's largest wine region, and is the natural starting point for this tour. The day moves between well-known producers and boutique, family-run cellar doors, with a sit-down lunch at a vineyard restaurant. Back in town, local restaurants, cafes and craft breweries are there once the tasting is done.

  9. Marlborough Region

Marlborough is New Zealand's largest wine region, spread across the Wairau and Awatere Valleys with more than 150 wineries. It is known worldwide for Sauvignon Blanc, and also makes Pinot Noir, aromatic whites and traditional method sparkling wines. The day moves between internationally recognised producers and small family-run cellar doors, with rolling vineyard plains and mountains framing the valley.
