Campania wine tours, from Vesuvius to Irpinia
Twenty tours at a median of 95 EUR, the lowest of any Italian region here. Where Vesuvius, Irpinia and the Amalfi coast fit, and how far each is from Naples and Sorrento.
Campania wine tours are the cheapest in this catalogue: the 20 listings have a median price of 95 EUR, against 250 EUR in Sicily and 174 in Chianti. Part of the reason is that seven of them are built around Naples or Sorrento themselves, and six of those seven last under three hours. Only eight go to the vineyards of Vesuvius, three reach Irpinia, where the region's best-known red is made, and two head for the Amalfi coast. This page is about the region underneath: three separate wine zones, what their denominations say, and how far each one is from Naples, Sorrento and Amalfi. What the 20 tours include, and how to choose between them, is on the Vesuvius & Campania wine tours page.
A note on method. Distances on this page are straight lines between the meeting points and stops named in the listings, so a road is always longer. Denomination rules come from the published disciplinare of the DOC Vesuvio; for the rest we used consortium and reference sources, and the text says when a figure comes from a secondary one.
Two kinds of reader tend to land here. One has a day near Naples and wants to know whether Vesuvius is worth it. The other wants Taurasi and needs to know what that costs in time. The sections below are ordered for both: the volcano first, then the distances, then the long inland day.

Campania wine tours cover three wines in three places
Campania does not have a single wine. West of Naples is the Campi Flegrei DOC, with Piedirosso for the red and Falanghina for the white, and no tour in this catalogue goes there. East of the city, under the volcano, is the DOC Vesuvio. About 60 km inland from Naples in a straight line is Irpinia, where Taurasi (Aglianico) and the white DOCGs Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo come from. And on the coast, the vines worth a detour sit in the hills behind the cliffs, around Tramonti.
The catalogue reaches the last three. It reaches them unevenly, and the rest of this page says where the weight sits.
The Vesuvius denomination in plain terms
The DOC Vesuvio was recognised by decree on 13 January 1983. Its zone covers the whole of Boscotrecase, Trecase and San Sebastiano al Vesuvio, and parts of twelve more communes, from Torre Annunziata and Ercolano round to Somma Vesuviana. The disciplinare sets the grapes. For the white, Coda di volpe (called Caprettone locally) must be at least 35%. For the red, Piedirosso (locally Palombina) must be at least 50%, with Sciascinoso up to 30% and Aglianico up to 20%.
Lacryma Christi is not a denomination of its own. It is a mention inside the DOC Vesuvio, available for white, red, rosé, sparkling and liqueur wines from the zone.
On the ground, the Vesuvius listings are a handful of wineries on the south and south-east side, in and around Pompei and Boscotrecase. Bosco de' Medici's experimental vineyard grows Piedirosso, Aglianico, Caprettone and Falanghina on an estate of four hectares close to the excavations of Pompeii. The Sorrentino family's vineyard at Boscotrecase appears in two of the twenty listings, under two different operators.
How far each zone is from where you sleep
The map marks the cities most tours leave from as squares and the wine towns as dots. The 25 km scale bar tells most of the story. Pompei and Boscotrecase are 18 to 22 km from Naples and about 17 km from Sorrento, so a Vesuvius tasting fits into two hours around a meal. Taurasi is 60 km from Naples and 65 km from Sorrento, which is why the two Irpinia days with transport run 8 to 8.5 hours. Amalfi is only 19 km from Sorrento in a straight line, yet the one long Amalfi listing takes six hours, with stops at Ravello and Positano on the way to the vineyards.
| Zone | Nearest hubs | Straight-line distance | How the listings handle it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vesuvius slope (Pompei, Boscotrecase) | Naples, Sorrento | 18 to 22 km from Naples, 17 km from Sorrento | The Bosco de' Medici listings meet in Pompei; one private day and one lunch day include transport from Naples |
| Irpinia (Taurasi, Montemiletto, Celzi) | Naples, Sorrento | Taurasi 60 km from Naples and 65 km from Sorrento; Celzi about 41 km from both | Two listings include the transfer; the Sella delle Spine tasting meets you in Taurasi, with no transport listed |
| Amalfi coast (Tramonti) | Sorrento, Amalfi | Amalfi is 19 km from Sorrento and 37 km from Naples | The private day collects from hotels in Sorrento and on the coast; a farm tasting in Tramonti is a separate listing |
| Sorrento peninsula | Sorrento | In town, or a short ride out | Two tastings in Sorrento itself, a mill that sends a courtesy car, and an e-bike day to a farm |
| Naples | Naples | In the city | Three tastings of 1.5 to 2.3 hours |
Getting to Vesuvius without a car
Of the three zones, only Vesuvius works on public transport. The Circumvesuviana train from Napoli Garibaldi to Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri is reported at 33 to 37 minutes and about 3.30 EUR; get off there, not at Pompei Santuario, the other station in town. Those figures come from travel sites, because the operator's own fare page was not reachable when we checked, so confirm them on the day.
Irpinia is a different matter. Unless a listing includes the transfer, you need a car, and a car means one person not tasting. The other way to solve it is to book one of the two listings that collect you.
Sorrento as a base
Sorrento is where the long days start. The private Irpinia day and the long Amalfi Coast day both collect from Sorrento hotels, and the Cortecorbo cooking-and-wine day lists pickup points from Piazza Tasso in Sorrento to Vico Equense, Positano, Amalfi and Ravello.
Naples is the other starting point. The Sorrentino private lunch and a 155 EUR transfer-and-lunch day both collect there. Sleep on the peninsula and Vesuvius becomes the half-day you add; sleep in Naples and Vesuvius is easy, while Irpinia is the long one.
Irpinia, where the region's red comes from
Taurasi became a DOC in 1970 and a DOCG on 11 March 1993, according to reference sources, and covers 17 communes and about 393 hectares (Wikipedia figures; the consortium's own numbers were not reachable). The grape is Aglianico. The Sella delle Spine listing pours three DOCG labels in one sitting, Fiano di Avellino, Greco di Tufo and a Taurasi, with truffle fondue, aubergine parmigiana, cheeses and cured meats, and finishes at the Marchionale castle in Taurasi.
Irpinia is the zone that turns a wine tour into a full day. The visits are the familiar sequence of vineyard, cellar and tasting, but the distance decides the format: three listings go, and two of them include the drive from Sorrento and the coast villages.
The Amalfi coast has vines, but you go inland for them
The two Amalfi listings are a long private drive and a short farm visit. The first, at 500 EUR for up to 12 travellers, takes six hours, stops at Ravello and Positano and includes Tramonti, where a sommelier walks you through the vineyards before four wines in the cellar.
The alternative is Tenuta San Francesco, also in Tramonti, a farm of about eight and a half hectares that its listing says began making wine in 2004 from the grapes of three local families. The tasting takes two hours and costs 70 EUR.
Why Campania is the cheap end of Italy
On the chart, Campania has the lowest median of the six Italian regions on this site, and a narrow middle half of listings, 66 to 151 EUR. Twelve of the 20 cost under 100 EUR. Only three cost more than 250: a 500 EUR private Amalfi day, a 377 EUR private Irpinia day and a 260 EUR private lunch on the slope of Vesuvius. All three are long days with a driver.
How price moves with hours, lunch and who runs the tour is worked out on the Vesuvius & Campania page, where it belongs.

Questions about wine tours in Campania
Which Campanian wine zone should I choose?
Choose by time and by glass. Vesuvius is the short option, 18 to 22 km from Naples, with two-hour tastings from 29 EUR. Irpinia is the option for a serious red, Taurasi, and costs a full day. The Amalfi coast is the option for the drive itself, with the wine as the reason to stop. Campi Flegrei has no tour here yet.
Can I do a Campania wine tour without a car?
Vesuvius, yes: the train to Pompei Scavi and listings that meet in Pompei. Irpinia only with a listing that includes transport. The 50 EUR Taurasi tasting meets at the winery, so you would have to reach Taurasi yourself, and we did not find a dependable public route. The Amalfi listings collect from hotels.
Is Lacryma Christi a grape or a wine?
Neither. It is a mention used on wines of the DOC Vesuvio, white, red, rosé, sparkling or liqueur, from the zone around the volcano. The white leans on Coda di volpe, the red on Piedirosso. The story of Christ weeping over the bay is a legend, not a fact about the wine.
Can I see Pompeii and a winery in the same day?
The Pompeii wineries in the catalogue sit close to the site and meet in Pompei, so the two fit. None of the 20 listings is sold as an excavations tour with a winery attached, so buy the site ticket separately and leave the tasting for the afternoon.
When is the best time to go?
We have no sourced harvest window for Vesuvius or Irpinia, so this page gives no month. Ask the winery when you book: picking dates move from year to year, and some wineries limit visits while they pick.
