Canada wine tours: Niagara or the Okanagan

44 tours from 82 to 349 EUR, median 126, in two regions 3,100 km apart. One operator's four tours pull the national rating down from 4.88 to 4.80.

Canada has two wine regions on this site, and they sit about 3,100 km apart, measured in a straight line from Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario to Kelowna in British Columbia. Nobody combines them on a long weekend, so the useful question about Canada wine tours is which side of the country you are on. The catalogue splits 24 and 20: 24 tours around Niagara-on-the-Lake, 20 around Kelowna and the south Okanagan, all of them sold through Viator at a median of 126 EUR and carrying 4,055 reviews. This page compares the two regions and covers what holds for both, from reading a VQA label to the limit for driving afterwards. The tours themselves live on the two regional pages.

One number to keep in mind before comparing anything: a single operator, Community Transport Group, holds 829 of the 4,055 reviews, all of them in Niagara, at a weighted 4.49. Without those four tours the country rates 4.88. Niagara is better than its headline score suggests, and the Okanagan is the region where nobody drags it down. What follows compares prices, climate, labels, seasons and the rules for getting home afterwards, with a link to Niagara-on-the-Lake and to the Okanagan Valley for the tours themselves.

Canada wine tours: pick the region before the tour

The two regions are not neighbours in any useful sense. Between them lie the Great Lakes, the prairies and the Rockies, which is why you fly and why the choice is made by your itinerary, not by the wine. If you are flying into Toronto, Niagara is an hour or two away and the tours collect you from the Falls or from a hotel in town. If you are landing in Kelowna, the West Kelowna wineries are about 10 km from downtown. The map shows how little the two have to do with each other.

The tours reflect the distance. In Niagara the typical day is five hours, the price median is 136 EUR and ten of the 24 tours cost more than 150 EUR. In the Okanagan 13 of the 20 tours run exactly four hours, the median is 121 EUR and only five cost more than 150. Niagara has the dearer ceiling, a 349 EUR private icewine day with four reviews. The Okanagan's dearest is a 247 EUR private day in Naramata with 26.

On the chart Canada sits between Portugal at 125 EUR and Australia at 129, cheaper than the 242 EUR that both the USA and Argentina ask and dearer than Spain at 110 or Chile at 108. The bar is worth a look too. The middle half of Canadian listings runs from 107 to 155 EUR, one of the narrowest on the chart. There is almost no luxury tier here to pay for by accident. A group tour in either region rarely passes 155 EUR, and the outliers are private vehicles.

The last row deserves a second look. Tasting fees in Ontario run 20 to 35 CAD per person per winery according to the one Niagara operator that spells it out, so a listing that leaves them out can cost noticeably more than its price suggests. Nineteen of the twenty Okanagan listings say the tastings are paid for, and some go further: three Sip Happens tours include the guide's 15% gratuity too.

Aerial view of vineyards and Vaseux Lake in the Okanagan Valley, British Columbia

One region is a lake valley, the other a peninsula

The Okanagan is a long north-south valley that Wines of BC puts at over 250 km, with up to 2,000 hours of sunshine a year, hot days, cool nights and some 80 grape varieties. It holds 86% of British Columbia's vineyard acreage. The tours only touch part of it: 18 of the 20 work Kelowna, West Kelowna and Lake Country.

Niagara is a peninsula at latitude 43 North with 13,600 acres of vines and 46-plus varieties, roughly 55% of Ontario's VQA wineries, with the Escarpment, a north-facing cliff, running through it. The tours cluster in and around Niagara-on-the-Lake. Both sit near the northern limit of where wine grapes grow, which is why icewine turns up in both.

Reading a Canadian wine label

The letters to know are VQA, which stands for Vintners Quality Alliance and is Ontario's appellation law, in force since the 1999 act. A bottle marked VQA Ontario is made from 100% Ontario-grown grapes. Narrow it to Niagara Peninsula and the rule is more than 85% Niagara fruit, with up to 15% from elsewhere in the province. Inside the peninsula sit three regional appellations, Niagara Escarpment, Niagara-on-the-Lake and West Niagara, and ten sub-appellations such as Four Mile Creek, Niagara River and St. David's Bench.

British Columbia runs its own system. The Okanagan Valley is a geographical indication, in use since 1990, and Wines of BC lists sub-regions running from Lake Country in the north down to the Golden Mile Bench in the south.

Rules quoted from the VQA Ontario programme pages; the Okanagan entry from Wines of BC.
On the label What it promises
VQA Ontario100% Ontario-grown grapes
VQA Niagara PeninsulaMore than 85% Niagara grapes, up to 15% from elsewhere in Ontario
VQA IcewineFrozen naturally on the vine, picked below -8 °C, juice at 35 °Brix or more, growing area on the front label
Okanagan Valley (BC)A geographical indication, in use since 1990, with sub-regions from Lake Country to the Golden Mile
Icewine is not a dessert wine with a marketing story. In Ontario it is a legal definition: natural freezing on the vine, picking below -8 °C, at least 35 °Brix.

Both halves of Canada make it and only Niagara builds tours around it, which is why the icewine detail sits on the page for Niagara wine, cheese and icewine tours. It is not a Canadian monopoly, though: Germany and Austria make Eiswein by the same principle.

When to go, region by region

Both regions peak when the grapes do. After that they part company.

Drinking, driving and the age limit

The minimum drinking age is 19 in both Ontario and British Columbia; most listings repeat it in their terms. The other number that decides whether you need a tour at all is the driving limit. Both provinces treat 0.08 as a criminal matter, but the lower thresholds bite first. Ontario has a warn range from 0.05 that brings a roadside licence suspension. In British Columbia a reading of 0.05 or more means a driving prohibition of 3 to 30 days and a fine, and novice drivers must blow zero. A few winery tastings can put a driver over that line, which is the practical reason nearly every tour here includes the transport.

Who runs the 44 tours

There are 24 operators in all, 12 on each side, and no operator works both regions. Reviews are concentrated: Community Transport Group holds 829, Grape Escape Wine Tours 718 from a single 82 EUR tour, and Out of Town Lincoln 452, which together make 49% of every review in the country. Out west it is flatter. Lakeside Eco-Sports leads with 334 reviews on two e-bike tours, then Red Dog with 270 and Sip Happens with 170. A rating built on a handful of operators tells you about those operators, so read the number of reviews beside the stars. Fifteen of Niagara's 24 tours have fewer than 50 reviews, and ten of the Okanagan's 20.

Questions about Canada wine tours

Where is the best wine region in Canada for a tour?

It depends on where you are flying into. Niagara-on-the-Lake suits Toronto and Niagara Falls visitors, with 24 tours and pickup included on every one. The Okanagan suits British Columbia trips, with 20 tours rated 4.9. Neither is a day trip from the other, since they are about 3,100 km apart.

Is icewine only made in Canada?

No. Germany and Austria make Eiswein on the same principle of harvesting frozen grapes. What Canada has is a strict legal definition: in Ontario the grapes must freeze naturally on the vine and be picked below -8 °C, at 35 °Brix or more. Niagara is where most tours are built around it.

Do the tours include the tasting fees?

Mostly in the Okanagan, where 19 of 20 listings say so, and usually in Niagara. The exception is worth knowing: one private Niagara icewine day states tastings are extra at 20 to 35 CAD per person per winery. Check the Not included list before you book.

Can I visit both regions on one trip?

Only with a flight between them. Niagara-on-the-Lake and Kelowna are about 3,100 km apart in a straight line, and the catalogue has no tour that links them. Plan one region per trip or spend a few days in each, and book the tours locally in both.

Do I need a car?

Not for any of these tours. All 24 Niagara tours and 17 of the 20 Okanagan ones include hotel pickup, and most of the rest start from a named meeting point in town. A hire car only matters if you want to visit on your own, and then the drink-drive limits above apply.

Which region has better ratings?

The Okanagan, at a weighted 4.90 against Niagara's 4.75. Most of the gap is one operator: take out Community Transport Group's four tours and Niagara rises to 4.87. Both regions sit close to 4.9 once that single operator is set aside.
