Portugal Wine Tours: Douro Valley or Lisbon and Setúbal

112 tours from 16 to 612 EUR, median 125. 80 start in Porto, 32 in Lisbon, and the Douro holds 88% of the reviews.

Of the 112 wine tours we list in Portugal, 80 are Douro Valley tours from Porto and 32 start in Lisbon, and the Douro Valley holds 88% of the 35,301 reviews. That lopsidedness is the first thing to know about buying wine tours in this country on this site: Portugal is two ways of starting, not fourteen regions. The north is the Douro, Port and a nine hour day; the south is the Setúbal peninsula and a moscatel, half an hour out of Lisbon. The median tour costs 125 EUR, below Italy and France and above Spain. Count days, not regions: the Douro wants one full one. This page compares the two regions, says what the site does not cover, explains how to read a Portuguese label, and sends you to the Douro Valley or Lisbon & Arrábida for the tours themselves.

Prices are per person as listed by the platforms, read on 30 September 2026, private tours per booking. Nothing here covers Alentejo, Vinho Verde, Dão or Madeira: the catalogue has no tours there yet, and where we explain why, it is from what the provider listings show. Every number on this page is one we can reproduce from those listings on the date above, and where a figure comes from a regulator rather than a listing, the source is named beside it.

Portugal wine tours: the Douro or Lisbon

The choice is made by where you sleep. A Douro day from Porto is long, usually nine hours, and usually includes lunch. The Setúbal day from Lisbon is shorter, and more often private. Both regions make wines you cannot easily drink elsewhere: Port and Douro reds in the north, moscatel and Castelão reds in the south. They are sold as different products at different prices, so the table below puts the numbers side by side before any opinion.

The 25 EUR gap between medians hides a bigger one. The Douro has four formats with a 26 EUR ticket to a Gaia port lodge at one end and 282 EUR for a private car at the other, so its middle half runs from 54.50 to 250 EUR. Lisbon's two formats barely overlap: day trips from 70 EUR, and two hour tastings at a median of 47.50 EUR. The typical Douro day includes lunch about half the time; the typical Setúbal trip, one in eight.

Chart comparing the median wine tour price in 13 countries; Portugal at 125 EUR across 112 tours
Median wine tour price in 13 countries with the spread of the middle half of listings. Portugal, at 125 EUR, is ninth of 13. · Wine Tours Editorial, from the prices of the tours listed on this site

Eight of the 13 countries on this site cost more at the median. Portugal sits between Canada (126 EUR) and South Africa (122 EUR). It is cheaper than Italy at 143 EUR and only a little over half of France's 232 EUR. Spain is 15 EUR below. The spread is what stands out: the middle half of Portuguese tours runs from about 56 to 209 EUR, a wide bar because the Douro sells both a 26 EUR cellar ticket and a 282 EUR private car.

The Douro: where the reviews are

Nearly nine of ten reviews on this page are for Douro tours, and the region's first fact is geography: a river, schist, and terraced slopes that make tractors hard. The valley is about 250,000 hectares of demarcated land with 43,808 hectares of vines, listed by UNESCO in 2001. The tours leave Porto and spend the day up the river.

The Douro Valley page has the train timetable, the four formats and the dates; the river cruise tours are the most booked, the private cars make sense from three people, and the Gaia lodges are a 26 EUR ticket.

Two wines, two prices of admission

The choice of region is also a choice of glass. The Douro is Port, a fortified wine, and DOC Douro table wines from the same vines. Setúbal's headline wine is fortified moscatel, made from at least 85% Moscatel de Setúbal or Moscatel Roxo, with Palmela reds alongside. If you want to try Port without a day out, the lodges in Gaia sell tastings at a median of 25.50 EUR. The equivalent in Lisbon is a two hour tasting at 47.50 EUR, run by a bar, not a producer.

If you have one day, pick the Douro only if you are happy to spend most of it on the road and the river. If you have two, both regions fit, and the order matters less than booking the Douro first, because the tourist board advises booking ahead at harvest.

Reading the map

Portugal showing its wine regions on this site: the Douro Valley in the north, and Lisbon and Arrábida in the south. · Wine Tours Editorial. Natural Earth (public domain), place positions © OpenStreetMap contributors

The two regions sit at opposite ends of a coastline. Porto to the Douro runs east along the river; Lisbon to the Setúbal peninsula runs south across the Tagus estuary. Between them lie Vinho Verde, Dão, Bairrada and Alentejo, none of which this site covers yet. The shortest honest summary of the map is that Portugal's wine tourism is easy in two corners and unmapped in between.

The north's headline date is 2001, when the Alto Douro Wine Region became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Portugal has a second wine-related site, the Pico Island vineyard culture in the Azores, listed in 2004. We sell nothing in the Azores.

What the site does not cover, and why

Portugal has more wine regions than this page lists, and some of them have tours. Alentejo is the obvious gap. In our review of the provider catalogue, 18 of 31 Alentejo listings turned out to be Évora sightseeing days with a tasting attached, which is exactly the product this site does not sell as a wine tour. Vinho Verde we have not mapped. A few Douro listings already start there, like a 149 EUR sommelier day that spends the morning at a 400-year-old family winery in the vinho verde region before crossing to the river.

Madeira and the Azores are outside the scope. If one of them is where you are going, the rest of this page applies as a way of reading labels, not as a tour guide.

Lisbon and Arrábida in one paragraph

The south is a peninsula of sand and limestone an easy drive from Lisbon. The two wine names are Setúbal, a fortified moscatel, and Palmela, red wine built on Castelão. The Setúbal denomination was delimited in 1907, which its regulator calls the second oldest in Portugal, and the wine is at least 85% Moscatel de Setúbal or Moscatel Roxo. The Lisbon & Arrábida page covers the drive, the format split and the Monday problem.

How to read a Portuguese wine label

A bottle tells you its rule by its initials. DOC (or DOP in the EU term) is a protected denomination with fixed boundaries, grapes and yields: Douro, Porto, Setúbal and Palmela are all DOCs. Vinho Regional is the looser indication of geographic origin, such as Regional Península de Setúbal. A bottle with neither is a wine without a region. IVV, the national institute, counts 33 protected designations of origin and 8 protected geographical indications at the time of reading.

Port is its own vocabulary. Ruby is the young style. Tawny has aged in wood and is sold with age statements of 10, 20, 30 and 40 years. Vintage Port comes from a single declared year. White Port exists and is sold as a separate style. None of this is tour-specific, but the tastings on the four Douro pages pour all of them at some point.

Getting around, and the limit

You do not need a car for either region, and in the Douro you should not want to drive. Porto's direct trains reach Régua in 1h55 and Pinhão in 2h15 to 2h20; Setúbal is 30 to 40 minutes from Lisbon on operators' figures, and the tours include the driver. The Portuguese limit is 0.5 g/l of blood alcohol and 0.2 g/l for drivers with less than three years' licence and for professionals. A tasting day is several pours, so a driver or a train is not optional. The Douro tour pages say what each format costs a head; the private page does the sums at two, three and four guests.

A tasting day is several pours, so the driver or the train is part of the itinerary, not an extra.

Questions about Portugal wine tours

Should I choose the Douro or Lisbon?

The Douro for Port and the valley, with a nine hour day. Lisbon for a shorter trip to Setúbal's moscatel and Palmela's reds, half an hour from the city. The medians are 140 and 115 EUR.

Is Portugal cheaper than other wine countries?

At 125 EUR it is cheaper than Italy (143) and France (232), and dearer than Spain (110). The Douro's range is very wide.

Do I need a car?

No. Porto has a direct train to the Douro, and the tours include a driver. Portugal's limit is 0.5 g/l.

Is the Douro only Port?

No. The same vines make DOC Douro table wines, and the tours pour both.

Can I do Alentejo or Vinho Verde?

Not from this site yet. A few Douro tours start in the vinho verde region; Alentejo is not covered.

What do DOC and Vinho Regional mean?

DOC is a protected name with fixed rules; Vinho Regional is a looser geographic indication.

When should I go?

Harvest weeks in September and early October, or late spring. July and August are the hottest, reaching 38 °C in the Douro.

Data verified on. Tours, prices and reviews from the 112 listings; hectares from IVDP; label counts from IVV; Setúbal rules from CVRPS; all read 30 September 2026.
