This day in the Douro Valley is for anyone who wants to see where Port wine comes from. A local guide leads it, and SAPO Viagens listed it among the 14 best wine experiences in Portugal for 2022. The route covers wine, food, viewpoints and a fair amount of background on the region, with stops chosen to show the valley at its best.

  1. PC GEN Humberto Delgado 269, Porto

The meeting point is in front of Porto City Hall, by the statue of Almeida Garrett.

  2. D'Origem

A former olive oil mill, now a museum, and the last stop of the day. It worked until the turn of the century. The visit follows olive oil from the tree to the table, with another tasting of olive oil and wines, plus honey and almonds.

  3. Casal de Loivos Viewpoint

The day closes with a last look over the Douro Valley from a viewpoint the BBC has called the best in the world.

  4. Quinta de Ventozelo

Quinta de Ventozelo, the flagship estate of the Gran Cruz Corporation, hosts lunch. Its "Farm to Fork" concept was named in late 2021 by National Geographic among the 3 best gastronomic experiences in the world. Three wines of the estate go with the meal. After lunch comes the museum, which covers the Douro Valley within a single estate. It makes a big producer easy to compare with a small one, and explains how Port is made at this award-winning vineyard.

  5. Quinta Seara d'Ordens

The final Port wine tasting is at Quinta Seara d'Ordens, family-owned since 1792, known for its small, unusual boutique products.

  6. PC GEN Humberto Delgado 269, Porto
