New Zealand wine tours: Waiheke or Marlborough
Forty tours from 66 to 486 EUR, median 140. Waiheke costs a median 155 EUR and Marlborough 124, and 73% of New Zealand's vines are in the second.
New Zealand has 44,229 hectares of vines and 73% of them are in Marlborough, yet this catalogue splits its 40 tours evenly: 20 in Marlborough, 20 on Waiheke Island, a 35 to 40 minute ferry ride from Auckland. The most reviewed tour in the country, with 1,462 of the 6,781 reviews, is on the island, and its notes say ferry fares are not included. That is the real choice on this page. Waiheke is a boat ride and usually a long lunch, priced at a median of 155 EUR. Marlborough is Sauvignon Blanc country with cruise-ship days from Picton, priced at 124. Below are the two regions compared on the same base, the map, where New Zealand sits among the 13 countries here, and the regions the catalogue does not cover yet.
All 40 tours come from Viator and prices are per person as listed on 30 September 2026. Three listings are flagged private; one of them, on closer reading, is a ferry-and-bus package for up to nine people, so we talk about "two private tours" on the island. Two regions are not here yet, Central Otago and Hawke's Bay, and we say so below rather than pretend.

Two regions compared on one base
Waiheke and Marlborough are on different islands, separated by Cook Strait, and the tours reflect it. On Waiheke you arrive by boat and the tour starts at the island's ferry terminal. In Marlborough you arrive by road or by ship and the tour collects you in Blenheim or Picton. The table puts the numbers side by side.

The gap of about 32 EUR is smaller than it looks, because Waiheke tours more often fold lunch in than Marlborough ones do; the lunch flag in the data is a first guide only, so read each listing. Add a restaurant lunch to a Marlborough day and most of the gap disappears, while the Waiheke ferry is still extra. Each region has its own page: Waiheke Island and Marlborough.
What a day looks like on each side
The biggest Waiheke listing asks you to be in line by 8:30 for the 9:00 Fullers ferry, then runs a scenic drive and three boutique vineyards, with transfers to lunch and back to the terminal at 3:45 pm. Another Waiheke listing, with 374 reviews, sends a guide to meet the 10 am ferry at Matiatia and visits four cellars, Cable Bay, Batch, Stonyridge and Mudbrick, with a bus back at 3:40 pm; the ferries run until midnight, so you can stay on. In Marlborough the day starts at your accommodation in Blenheim or at the ship in Picton, and the cheapest cruise ticket, 66 EUR, is a hop-on, hop-off bus past more than 25 stops with tastings and food paid extra. The shape of the day is what you are really buying.
Where the two regions sit
Waiheke sits in the Hauraki Gulf, in the Auckland region, and Marlborough at the top of the South Island, around the Wairau valley and the town of Blenheim. They are hundreds of kilometres apart and on different islands; nobody does both in a day, and few manage both in a short trip. Choose by the trip you already have. If you land in Auckland, Waiheke is a day out. If you are travelling south from Wellington or arriving at Picton from a cruise ship, Marlborough is the obvious half day.
On Waiheke the island is the product. In Marlborough the wine is.
What the catalogue does not cover yet
The lake in this photograph is Wakatipu, at Queenstown, the town that serves as the gateway to Central Otago, the southern wine district that Pinot Noir drinkers know. Hawke's Bay, on the east coast of the North Island, is the other region missing. Neither has a tour in our catalogue today, so there are no prices, no reviews and no comparison to show.
If you are planning a longer New Zealand trip, treat this page as covering two days out rather than the country. A wine map of New Zealand has more regions than a catalogue of 40 tours can show, and we would rather add them when we can price them.
New Zealand against the other twelve countries
New Zealand's median of 140 EUR puts it in the middle of the field, close to Italy (143) and above Australia (129), South Africa (122) and Canada (126). The middle half of its listings spans 106 to 166 EUR, a fairly tight band, and only a handful of listings sit far outside it: a 66 EUR cruise-ship hop-on ticket at the bottom and a 486 EUR private food-and-wine day on Waiheke at the top. The two are not wine tours in the same sense.
Three numbers about New Zealand wine
The national body, New Zealand Winegrowers, reports 44,229 hectares of vines in 2026, less than 1% more than the year before, and 2,019 active vineyards, an average of 22 hectares each. Marlborough alone has 32,191 hectares, the 73% share. Those are the figures on the body's 2026 vineyard report. Older figures circulate; the regional page on the same body's site still says nearly 31,000 hectares for Marlborough. If you read a different number, check its year.
Who runs New Zealand's tours
Twenty-three operators share the 40 tours, and the names are confusingly alike. Waiheke Island Wine Tours has 22% of the country's reviews with two listings, and Waiheke Wine Tours Ltd, a different company, has another 10% with three. Marlborough Wine Tours has about 11%, and Marlborough Tour Company is someone else again. The surest way to tell them apart is the listing's operator line, not the name in the title. Check the operator before you compare reviews, or you may be comparing two companies as one.
Driving after a tasting
The adult blood-alcohol limit in New Zealand is reported as 50 mg per 100 ml, with zero for drivers under 20. We could not open the transport agency's own page when we wrote this, so check it before you hire a car. The good news is that almost no listing needs you to drive: both regions are built around a driver-guide, and Waiheke's tourism board lists buses, taxis and shuttles as ways around the island.
When to go to New Zealand's wine regions
Both regions follow the southern seasons; the note on each row says what changes.

Questions about New Zealand wine tours
Waiheke or Marlborough for a first New Zealand wine tour?
Waiheke if you are in Auckland and want a day out with lunch on a boat-and-vineyards island. Marlborough if you are heading to the South Island and want Sauvignon Blanc at its source. They are too far apart to combine, so the question is where you will be.
Is the ferry to Waiheke included?
Not on the ones we read. All three of the most reviewed Waiheke listings, with 1,462, 517 and 374 reviews, state that ferry fares are not included. A Fullers360 day package at 90 EUR says ferry travel is included. Check each listing's notes.
Can cruise passengers do a wine tour in New Zealand?
In Marlborough, yes: four listings are cruise-ship excursions from Picton, from 66 to 153 EUR, and a fifth leaves from the Port of Picton. The cheapest is a ticket for a hop-on bus, rated 4.0, with tastings and food extra. On Waiheke we found no cruise listing.
Are there wine tours in Central Otago or Hawke's Bay?
Not yet. Both are real wine regions, but they are not in the catalogue, so this site has no prices or reviews for them and we do not guess.
Is New Zealand expensive for wine tours?
It sits in the middle of the field at a median of 140 EUR, well below the USA, Argentina and France at 232 to 242, and above Chile at 108. The cheapest listings are transport tickets and the dearest are private days, so the median tells you little about the ordinary day.
Do I need to book in advance?
Usually yes. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before is standard on the Viator listings we checked, but the small-group ones cap numbers at 11 or so, and ferry timetables and cruise calls do not move for you.
