Champagne Wine Tours: Reims, Épernay and the Paris Day Trip
60 tours from 18 to 2,340 EUR, median 349. That median hides three markets: a 130 EUR tour from Reims, a 385 EUR day from Paris and a 488 EUR house tour.
Sixty Champagne wine tours sit in our catalogue, priced from 18 to 2,340 EUR, and the median of 349 EUR describes almost none of them. Split by what you get, the picture clears: tours that start in Reims or Épernay have a median of 130 EUR, a shared day trip from Paris costs 325 EUR at the median, and a tour built around the big houses costs 330 EUR shared or 539 EUR private. This page is the map of those choices. It covers Reims against Épernay, the train from Paris, what the UNESCO listing protects and what a house charges at its own door. If you are already in Reims or Épernay, book a grower; if you sleep in Paris, compare the day trip with the train first. Each format has its own page, linked at the foot of this one.
Everything below is priced per person as listed unless stated. Private listings often price the booking, up to six or eight people, and the catalogue does not always say which, so shared and private are kept apart wherever the gap is wide. All 60 tours are Viator listings; the most-reviewed operator, À La Française, holds 23% of the reviews. House prices are the houses' own, read on 30 September 2026. They move, so treat them as scale, not a quote.

Champagne wine tours are three products under one name
Take the 60 tours apart and they fall into three groups of twenty. Tours from Reims and Épernay cost 18 to 690 EUR, median 130, and last 3.9 hours at the median. Day trips from Paris cost 185 to 1,319 EUR, median 385, and last 10 hours. House tours, built around Moët, Veuve Clicquot, Pommery or Ruinart, cost 210 to 2,340 EUR, median 488, and 13 of the 20 are private. Nobody is choosing between 130 and 488 EUR. They are choosing whether they are already in Champagne, whether they come from Paris, and whether the name on the gate matters.
Champagne is not expensive because of the wine. It is expensive because of the distance from Paris and the name on the gate.
Read the bars rather than the dots. The Paris day trips have the widest bar, from about 306 to 680 EUR, because that group mixes a 185 EUR minibus seat with private cars that cost three times as much. The houses group starts higher than the other two: its cheapest listing is 210 EUR, and that one names no house. Reims and Épernay tours are cheaper because nobody drives you from Paris and most end before dinner. The details are on the pages for day trips from Paris, tours from Reims and Épernay and Champagne houses.
| Format | Tours | Price range | Median | Typical length | Choose it if |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tours from Reims and Épernay | 20 | 18 to 690 EUR | 130 EUR | 3.9 hours | You are already in the region, or arrive by train |
| Day trips from Paris | 20 | 185 to 1,319 EUR | 385 EUR (shared 325, private 843) | 10 hours | You sleep in Paris and want no logistics |
| Houses: Moët, Veuve Clicquot, Pommery | 20 | 210 to 2,340 EUR | 488 EUR (shared 330, private 539) | 8 hours | A named cellar visit matters more than the vineyard |
Reims or Épernay as your base
The two cities are the departure points of nearly every tour outside the Paris group, and they are different places. Reims has the cathedral where French kings were crowned, and around it the houses of Veuve Clicquot, Pommery, Taittinger, Ruinart and Mumm. Meeting points in our listings cluster at the tourist office in front of Reims Centre station. Épernay is smaller and has one street that matters, the Avenue de Champagne, where Moët & Chandon sits with several other houses close by, about 150 m from the station according to one operator.
Pick Reims for a first visit: more houses within reach of a train platform. Pick Épernay for the Avenue on foot and a short ride to Hautvillers and Aÿ.
| Reims | Épernay | |
|---|---|---|
| From Paris by train | About 45 minutes by TGV | About 80 minutes |
| Houses in town | Veuve Clicquot, Pommery, Taittinger, Ruinart, Mumm | Moët & Chandon, Perrier-Jouët, Pol Roger, Mercier, De Castellane on the Avenue de Champagne |
| UNESCO components | Saint-Nicaise hill and its chalk cellars | Avenue de Champagne and Fort Chabrol |
| Villages nearby | Verzenay, Rilly-la-Montagne, Ludes on the Montagne de Reims | Hautvillers, Aÿ, Cumières in the Marne valley |
The five districts, and which ones tours actually visit
Champagne was delimited in 1927 into five districts that differ in grape as much as in distance. Tours concentrate on the first three below, which sit close to Reims and Épernay; the two southern districts are a long way from either hub.
| District | Main grape | Villages in our listings | Nearest hub |
|---|---|---|---|
| Montagne de Reims | Pinot Noir | Verzenay, Rilly-la-Montagne, Ludes | Reims |
| Vallée de la Marne | Meunier and Pinot Noir | Hautvillers, Aÿ, Cumières | Épernay |
| Côte des Blancs | Chardonnay | Le Mesnil-sur-Oger | Épernay |
| Côte de Sézanne and the Aube | Chardonnay (Sézanne), Pinot Noir (Aube) | Not among the wine towns the listings visit | Far from both hubs |
The map shows the geography the prices follow. Paris is the far western square, well outside the wine country. Reims and Épernay are a short hop apart, and the wine towns the catalogue actually visits (Verzenay, Hautvillers, Aÿ and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger) all sit within a few kilometres to about fifteen of one of them. A tour from Reims to Hautvillers is short. A tour from Paris to the same village is a drive of roughly 140 km each way, and the price carries it.
The train from Paris costs less than the tour, and the tour sells something else
Paris Gare de l'Est to Reims is about 45 minutes on a TGV INOUI. Fares on booking sites start around 15 to 19 EUR when bought early and more often land between 30 and 49 EUR per journey; SNCF Connect is where to confirm them for your date. An operator that starts its tours at Reims station recommends the 8:28 from Paris-Est, which arrives at 9:14 from Monday to Saturday, and warns that some Sunday services stop at the separate Champagne-Ardenne TGV station outside the city. Against that, the cheapest shared Paris day trip in the catalogue is 185 EUR and the median 325.
The train gets you to Reims in 45 minutes. The tour gets you to the grower at the end of a road the train does not serve.
| Option from Paris | Time | Cost | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train to Reims, houses on your own | About 45 min each way | 15 to 49 EUR per journey, plus 30 to 90 EUR per house visit | Freedom; houses booked weeks ahead in season |
| Train to Épernay | About 80 min each way | Fare varies; a Moët visit starts at 48 EUR | The Avenue de Champagne on foot |
| Shared day tour | 10 hours at the median | 185 to 390 EUR | A driver-guide, Hautvillers, a grower tasting, usually Reims cathedral |
| Private day tour | 6 to 12 hours | 595 to 1,319 EUR | Your own timetable; check whether the price is per person or per booking |
Below the vines: crayères, cellars and what UNESCO protects
The 2015 UNESCO listing is called Champagne Hillsides, Houses and Cellars, and it does not cover the whole region. Inscribed on 4 July 2015, it protects three sets of places: the historic hillsides of Hautvillers, Aÿ and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ; the Saint-Nicaise hill in Reims; and the Avenue de Champagne with Fort Chabrol in Épernay. The vineyard of Champagne is 34,200 hectares. The listed core is about 1,100.
Under the ground, the chalk was quarried from Roman times, and the quarries, the crayères, became cellars. The Comité Champagne counts 370 of them under the Saint-Nicaise hill, 25 km of galleries beneath Reims and 110 km of cellars under the Avenue de Champagne, at 10 to 12 °C all year. Several listings describe the cellars of Pommery, Veuve Clicquot, Ruinart or Taittinger as UNESCO-listed; the listing covers particular sites, so ask which one rather than assume every cellar qualifies.
Champagne in eight dates
Founding years are the houses' own; the rest comes from the Comité Champagne and UNESCO.
The origins
1662
Merret describes adding sugar
Christopher Merret presents a paper in England on making wine sparkle with added sugar, six years before Dom Pérignon reaches Hautvillers in 1668.
1729
Ruinart is founded
The house dates itself to 1729 and calls itself the oldest dedicated champagne house; Gosset claims 1584 as the oldest wine house.
1743
Moët & Chandon
Claude Moët starts producing in Épernay.
1772
Veuve Clicquot
The house is founded in Reims; the widow Clicquot runs it in the early 1800s.
The growth
1823
Moët buys the abbey of Hautvillers
The house that later promotes the Dom Pérignon name buys the abbey where the monk worked.
1927
Five districts
The area is delimited in law: Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne, Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne and the Aube.
Today
2015
UNESCO listing
Champagne Hillsides, Houses and Cellars is inscribed on 4 July.
2025
266.1 million bottles
Shipments: 191.9 million from the houses, 74.2 million from growers and cooperatives; turnover 5.7 billion EUR.
The 1662 entry matters for tours. The Dom Pérignon line on many itineraries deserves care: the monk is buried at Hautvillers and the abbey church is a standard stop, but the story that he invented champagne is a later construction. In his day the bubbles were a fault he tried to avoid. Wine historians trace the legend to the 1820s, when his successor Dom Grossard began telling it and the house of Moët, which bought the abbey in 1823, promoted it. The sugar method was already being described in England in 1662.

Do you need to book?
For the big houses, yes. Veuve Clicquot asks visitors to book weeks ahead between May and October. Ruinart caps its visits at 12 people and suggests four to six weeks as a starting point. Moët recommends booking and limits places. Entry visits at the five houses we checked cost between 30 and 90 EUR per person: 30 at Pommery (self-guided), 36 at Veuve Clicquot, 40 at Taittinger, 48 at Moët and 90 at Ruinart, read on 30 September 2026. The Champagne houses page has the full price list and sets it against the tour prices.
Questions about Champagne tours
Is a Champagne tour worth it from Paris?
If you want the vineyards, a grower and a driver, yes. If you only want a house visit, no. The train reaches Reims in about 45 minutes and a house visit costs 30 to 90 EUR at the door. The shared Paris day trips cost 185 to 390 EUR, and what they add is Hautvillers, a grower tasting and not having to plan the timetable.
Reims or Épernay?
Reims has more houses and the cathedral, and it is 45 minutes from Paris by TGV against about 80 for Épernay. Épernay has the Avenue de Champagne, walkable from the station, and sits closer to Hautvillers and Aÿ. For a first visit most people do better starting in Reims.
Do I need to book the big houses?
Yes. The large houses in Reims ask for reservations weeks ahead from May to October and do not reliably take people who turn up. Smaller growers are easier, but their hours are shorter and some close while the grapes are picked.
What is the best time to visit Champagne?
The cellars are 10 to 12 °C all year, so weather matters little underground. The real variables are crowds and the harvest: houses are busiest from May to October, and small growers can close while the grapes are picked, which began in late August in 2025.
Can I visit Champagne without a car?
Yes for Reims and Épernay, by train and on foot. Villages such as Hautvillers, Aÿ or Verzenay need a tour or a taxi. Only 5 of the 20 Reims and Épernay tours include a pickup, so check the meeting point before you book.
