Reims and Epernay sit a short drive east of Paris, and this small-group day trip covers the region in one go. The day starts in the vineyards, where the guide explains how Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes are grown and harvested. From there it moves to two wineries, the Gothic cathedral of Reims and the grave of Dom Perignon. At least six tastings of different Champagnes are built into the day. One winery is Nicolas Feuillatte, the other a small producer where the winemaker himself shows the press and the cellars. Between stops there is time to learn how Champagne is bottled and how it should be tasted. Lunch is not included, so the free hour in Epernay is the time to eat.

  1. 12 Av. des Ternes, Paris

Arrive at least 15 minutes before the departure time. A café called Café Dada Ternes is at this address. The driver-guide arrives in a grey minibus about 10 minutes before departure, and the tour leaves on time.

  2. Champagne-Ardenne

A walk through a vineyard on the rolling hills of Champagne, among Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines. The guide explains how grapes for Champagne are grown and harvested.

  3. Nicolas Feuillatte

A visit to the Nicolas Feuillatte facility, a Champagne house popular across France, with three glasses of Champagne to taste.

  4. Abbaye Saint-Pierre d'Hautvillers

The abbey and its church belong to a UNESCO World Heritage site. Dom Perignon, a Benedictine monk, lived here in the 1600s. The guide tells his story in the church, then the group stops at his grave.

  5. Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Reims

A Gothic cathedral more than 800 years old, carved in stone inside and out. The guide gives its history, then leaves 20 to 30 minutes free to look around and take photos.

  6. Champagne DOMI

Stéphane, a Champagne winemaker, takes the group through the whole production process, from the wine press to the racks of bottles in his cellars. The visit ends with 3 to 4 Champagnes tasted with him. Depending on the day, the group may also stop at another small partner producer.

  7. Epernay

Epernay is known as the capital of Champagne. The guide leads the group into the old town and points out its main sights, then gives a full hour of free time. Lunch is not included, so it is eaten wherever you like.
