The imbalance says less about wine than about geography. Penedès, Montserrat and the Priorat are a day out from a city of millions, while Rioja sits roughly 370 km away in a straight line and sells mostly single winery visits. Viator supplies 75 of the 93 tours, Civitatis 15 and Tiqets 3, behind 51 operators. The median tour lasts 6 hours. About 38% are private, 35% include a meal and 44% include hotel pickup, so in more than half of the listings you get yourself to a meeting point. Price is where Spain stands out. At 110 EUR it is the third cheapest of the 13 countries here, above only Chile and Georgia, and its range is wide: the middle half of listings runs from 49 to 307 EUR, which is the distance between a cellar-door ticket and a private driver.
Penedès and Priorat against Rioja
The two regions are sold in opposite ways. In the Barcelona area the catalogue is dominated by day trips that add Montserrat to a cellar: 17 of the 57 listings, carrying 17,861 reviews, and one company holds 68% of the region's reviews. Rioja has 19 operators and the largest holds 9%. Its reviews sit on short winery visits: 16 listings at a median of 25 EUR carry 4,812 of Rioja's 6,611 reviews, while the 20 day trips from the Basque cities have a median of 327.50 EUR and 1,799 reviews.

Do not read 115 against 100 as a tie. Penedès's number sits on full days, Rioja's is what you get when two different products share one page. Go to Penedès and Priorat if you start in Barcelona, and to Rioja if red wine is the point and you have a base in the north.
Spain has no single price for a wine tour. It has a cellar-door ticket and a day out, and the gap between them is tenfold or more.
The quiet differences are in the small print. Rioja listings are likelier to include a meal, 47% against 28%, which matters when a day costs 327 EUR and lunch is otherwise extra. Hotel pickup is the same in both, 44%. And the ratings are close, 4.87 against 4.81, which says that neither region has a quality problem. Their problem is that one is priced per day and the other per hour, and the page you land on will not say so in its title.
The map is the quickest answer to the question people ask most. Treat the regions as two trips, not one. A line from the Penedès dot to the Rioja dot runs roughly 370 km before any road bends, and every listing we hold stays inside one region.
How to read a Spanish wine label
Spanish labels speak in ageing more than in grapes. Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva are legal terms, not compliments. In Rioja a red Crianza spends two years in cellar and bottle with at least one in oak, a Reserva three years, a Gran Reserva five with at least two in oak. Cava runs a ladder of its own: nine months on the lees to begin with, and at least 30 for a Gran Reserva.
The initials matter too. DO is the ordinary denomination of origin. DOCa adds Calificada for regions with a long record, and Rioja was the first in 1991. The Priorat is the second, written DOQ in Catalan, recognised in Catalonia in 2000 and by the state in 2009. A guide who explains these in the cellar is doing the real work of the visit.
Getting there without a car
The question behind half the searches for Spain wine tours is whether a tour is necessary at all. In two places it is not. The cava town of Sant Sadurní d'Anoia is on a commuter line, and in Rioja the train reaches Haro, where several cellars stand near the station. In the Priorat it is, because there is no railway into the wine villages.

Drinking and driving in Spain
The legal limit is 0.5 g/l of blood, or 0.25 mg/l of breath. It is 0.3 g/l for drivers with under two years of licence and for professional drivers. A cut to 0.2 g/l has been announced in the press, but we found no approved law, so do not plan around it. The practical point is older than any reform: a Penedès cellar pours two or three cavas before you have left the tasting room, and a Rioja visit at 30 EUR pours two wines. That is enough reason for the tour, the train or the named driver.

Which region for which trip
If you are in Barcelona for a few days, take Penedès and Priorat. It is the only place in this catalogue where a train ticket and a 21.50 EUR cellar-door visit make a complete afternoon. Take Montserrat with a cellar only if you want the mountain as much as the wine, and read that page first.
If you want serious red, the choice is Rioja or the Priorat. Rioja has the gentler logistics and the winery visit from 20 EUR. The Priorat sounds like a day trip and sells like a private charter: of the 20 listings on Priorat and Barcelona Wine Tastings, seven visit the region and one takes a shared group there from Barcelona. Questions about Spain wine tours
Is Rioja or Penedès better for a wine tour?
They are different trips. Penedès and Priorat leave from Barcelona, are dominated by day trips with Montserrat or cava cellars, and carry 76% of the reviews here. Rioja is red wine country reached from Bilbao, San Sebastián or Logroño, with winery visits from about 20 EUR. Choose by where you sleep and whether you want cava or Tempranillo.
Can I visit Spanish wineries without a car?
Partly. Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, the cava town, has a commuter train from Barcelona, and Haro in Rioja has cellars near the station. The Priorat has no railway, and cellars outside the towns, such as those in Elciego, need a taxi or a tour.
What is the drink-driving limit in Spain?
0.5 g/l of blood, or 0.25 mg/l of breath, and 0.3 g/l for new and professional drivers. A reduction to 0.2 g/l has been reported as planned, but we found no approved law. Tastings pour small measures that add up, so assume the driver does not drink.
Is cava Spanish champagne?
No, and the word champagne is legally reserved for the French region. Cava is a sparkling wine with its own denomination, made from Macabeo, Parellada and Xarel·lo, among others. One Penedès listing on this site is titled with the word champagne and describes cava, so read the description before you book.
Do I need to book ahead?
Yes for anything with a fixed visit time. Muga in Haro, for instance, states on its own visit page that entry closes once the visit has started and that cancellations inside 48 hours are not refunded. Tour departures from Barcelona fill more slowly in winter but are worth booking a few days ahead.
How much does a wine tour in Spain cost?
