Rioja Wine Day Trips from Bilbao and San Sebastián
Twenty full days from 75 to 650 EUR, median 327.5. The cheapest is also the only one rated below 4.8, and four of the twenty include no lunch.
The cheapest Rioja day trip in this category costs 75 EUR and is also the only one rated below 4.8. The dearest costs 650 EUR. Between the two sit 18 more listings, 13 operators and one rule that holds almost everywhere: the price is mostly a driver. Twenty full-day Rioja wine day trips from Bilbao, San Sebastián and Rioja itself are listed here, 6 to 9 hours long with a median of 8, and 16 of them include a meal.
On this page you will find what moves the price from 75 to 650, how the departure city changes the bill, which listings skip lunch, and what to check before you pay for a private car that is priced per vehicle and not per head. The single-cellar visits at 25 EUR are a different product, on their own page.
All the figures were read from the listings on 30 September 2026. Prices move, and the Viator ones are the "from" price, which is not always what a party of two pays on a given date.
The page is part of Rioja, the destination that also covers the region's geography, trains and bodega prices. Here the subject is narrower: the eight-hour day.

What a Rioja wine day trip costs, and what pays for it
Three components make the bill. The first is the road: these are mostly days that start in a city some distance from the vineyards, and a driver is paid by the day whether the group tastes two wines or twelve. The second is the meal, which 16 listings include and four do not. The third is the group size, and it moves the price more than the number of wineries does. The 11 shared and small-group days have a median of 289 EUR. The nine private days have a median of 465 EUR, and every listing above 455 EUR is one of them.
Wineries matter less than you would guess. The cheap 90 EUR day visits two and adds a light lunch. A 506 EUR private day from San Sebastián visits three and stops for lunch. One extra cellar does not account for a fivefold price, so the gap is the vehicle, the group and the pace.
The chart makes the structure visible. Nine of the 11 shared days sit in two clumps, one at 75 to 110 EUR and one at 250 to 307 EUR, with nothing between 110 and 250 EUR. The other two shared days are 330 and 455. Private days start at 325 and never come back below it. The length hardly changes the price: an eight-hour day costs from 75 to 500 EUR. What changes it is who shares the vehicle with you.
Bilbao, San Sebastián, or neither: how the departure city moves the price
Most titles name a departure city. The table groups the 20 listings by the city they mention, with one caveat: a small sample and uneven shares of private tours make the medians indicative, not a rule.
| Departure | Listings | Price range | Median | Private |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bilbao | 5 | 75 to 325 EUR | 250 EUR | 1 (semi-private) |
| San Sebastián | 9 | 110 to 650 EUR | 395 EUR | 5 |
| No city in the title | 6 | 295 to 500 EUR | 440 EUR | 3 |
Bilbao: the Guggenheim as the meeting point
Two of the five Bilbao listings meet at the Guggenheim, and the cheapest of all, at 75 EUR, meets guests near it and returns to the same spot after about 8 hours. It covers a minibus, an English-speaking guide and two wineries with tastings. It does not list a meal, and the description leaves free time in Laguardia to find one. That is the trade at its clearest: you pay 75 EUR and buy your own lunch, or pay 90 and get a light pintxos lunch in Laguardia.
The 90 EUR tour, from the same city, offers private and small-group options and a bilingual group option. The bilingual group visits one winery, not two, and has no lunch and no hotel pickup, so the options share a title and differ by half the day.
The six listings with no city in the title are more expensive on average, and the one we opened explains why. Rioja Like A Native, at 455 EUR, lists seven meeting points, all inside Rioja: Cenicero, Briones, Briñas, Haro, Elciego, Laguardia and Logroño. You start where the wine is, so the price is not spent on a transfer from the coast. It is spent on a small group of up to eight, two family-owned wineries, a vineyard walk and a meal.
Inclusions to read before you book
Sixteen of the 20 listings include lunch. The four that do not are the 75 EUR Civitatis day, the 295 EUR Rioja Wine Route with a winery owner (6 hours, the shortest on the page), the 325 EUR semi-private tour of three premium wineries from Bilbao, and the 650 EUR private day. The last one is the strangest line in the category. Its inclusions list hotel pickup, a private driver, a guide and transport, and no meal and no tasting fee, while the itinerary promises visits and tastings at four wineries. It may well include them in practice. The listing just does not say so, and at 650 EUR it is worth asking.
Pickup is included in 16 listings as well. Check it against the departure: a tour that begins in a Rioja town and offers hotel pickup in San Sebastián are not the same product.
Two wineries or three, old or new
The listings divide into three recognisable kinds of day. There is the classic cellar day: a winery founded long ago, barrels of American oak, a second and smaller producer, lunch in Laguardia. There is the architecture day: three listings pair Marqués de Riscal at Elciego with Ysios, and they sell the buildings at least as much as the wine. And there is the producer's day, where a family winery hosts you in person, as in a Cenicero project inside a 15th-century winery with a cellar dug below it.
None is better. They answer different questions, and the headline price does not tell you which one you bought.
Private Rioja wine tours: a price per head or a price per car?
Nine listings are private or semi-private. The provider's feed gives one price and the words "up to 8 travelers per booking", and it does not say whether the price is for each traveller or for the group. For the private tours on this page that matters enormously: if 506 EUR is for the car, three people pay 169 each, and the private day is cheaper per head than several shared ones. If it is per person, it is not.
The safe way to read this is to divide by the party size at checkout before comparing. Cheap group days are priced per seat and stay per seat. A private listing is worth the comparison only after you have divided.
A private day makes sense for a party of four that wants to set the pace, and for a non-drinker who would rather not sit through four tastings.
One operator, a third of the reviews
Rioja Like A Native has three of the 20 listings, at 455, 330 and 500 EUR, and 34% of the category's reviews. The weighted rating of 4.92 on this page is therefore also the rating of one operator. That is not a criticism: they are well rated, 4.9 and 5.0 on their three. But it does mean you should compare a listing with the other 19 and not with the headline average, which is high partly because small listings with few reviews all show 5.0. Nine of the 20 do.
| You want | Look at | Expect to pay | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| The cheapest day | The 75 EUR Civitatis trip from Bilbao | 75 EUR | No lunch. The lowest rating on the page, 4.6 |
| A light lunch and two cellars | The 90 EUR Bilbao and 110 EUR San Sebastián days | 90 to 110 EUR | The 90 EUR bilingual group: one winery, no lunch |
| A family winery and a proper lunch | Rioja Like A Native, up to 8 guests | 455 EUR (the operator also lists 330 and 500) | Check whether the price is per person |
| Modern architecture | The three Riscal and Ysios listings | 250 to 299 EUR | The buildings take time from the tasting |
| Your own pace | A private day from San Sebastián | 395 to 650 EUR | Per person or per car, and what the price includes |
Three mistakes that cost money
The first is comparing the 650 EUR private day with the 110 EUR shared one without checking the unit, which is how a per-car price gets read as a per-head price. The second is booking the cheap bilingual option believing it is the two-winery tour with a different guide. The third is assuming Rioja means one place. The same name covers a hilltop village with cellars dug 7 metres below the street and a modern bodega built as a statement, and a day that shows you one of them may not show you the other. Ask the operator which side of the Ebro you will spend the afternoon on.
Want a single cellar instead of a full day?
The 16 Rioja winery visits run from 18 to 65 EUR and last one to two hours. Transport is not included, which is why they cost a fraction of a day.
Questions about Rioja wine day trips
How much does a Rioja day trip cost?
The median across 20 listings is 327.5 EUR, from 75 to 650. Shared and small-group days cost 75 to 455 EUR, private days 325 to 650 EUR. A 75 EUR trip exists, from Bilbao, but it includes no lunch and is the lowest rated on the page.
Is lunch included?
In 16 of the 20 listings it is. The four that do not are the 75 EUR Civitatis day, a 6-hour tour with a winery owner at 295 EUR, a 325 EUR semi-private tour from Bilbao, and a 650 EUR private day. Read the inclusions, because "tasting" on its own may mean a snack, not a meal.
Should I leave from Bilbao or San Sebastián?
Choose the city you are sleeping in. Bilbao listings start at 75 EUR and have a median of 250 EUR. San Sebastián ones have a median of 395 EUR, partly because five of the nine are private. For a like-for-like comparison, compare shared days with shared days.
Is a private Rioja tour worth the money?
For two people a private day at 450 to 650 EUR is expensive if the price is per head. For four to eight it may be cheaper per head than a small group, if the price is per vehicle. The listings do not say which, so divide at checkout before you compare.
Can I visit Rioja in a day from the coast?
Yes, and that is what these 20 listings are. They run 8 to 9 hours and visit two or three wineries plus Laguardia or another hill village. Expect to travel for a good part of the day, so there is less time in the cellars than the hours suggest.
Can I do it without a tour?
You can reach Haro by bus or train and book a single visit, but the architecture and the hilltop cellars of Rioja Alavesa need a vehicle. The Rioja page has the routes and times.
