Rioja Architecture Wine Day from Bilbao: Riscal, Ysios and Laguardia Tapas
This day trip from Bilbao covers Rioja from two sides: the old names and the new generation of winemakers. It stops at three very different wineries. Two are architectural landmarks, Marqués de Riscal and Ysios. The third is a family-run boutique winery that shows where Rioja wine is heading now. The tastings add up to at least eight wines, from world-famous labels to small-production bottles. Along the way the guides cover the region's history, its terroir and how its wine has traditionally been made. The day ends in Laguardia, a medieval village. There is a light tapas lunch, time on the cobbled streets, and views of vineyards and the wineries' buildings worth photographing.

Mazarredo Zumarkalea, 65 bis, Bilbao
Meet in front of the Guggenheim museum, at the big red Bilbao city view Hop-on Hop-off bus stop next to the tourist information point. It sits opposite the Islares restaurant, close to Jeff Koons' Puppy flower sculpture.
Bilbao
The day begins in Bilbao. A drive of about 1 hour 15 minutes follows the ridge of the Sierra de Cantabria to the Rioja wine region.
Bodegas Marques de Riscal
Founded in 1858, Marqués de Riscal is one of Rioja's oldest and most influential wineries, and it has mixed tradition with bold ideas ever since. Its wines helped put Rioja on the world map. Today the estate is recognisable from afar by the titanium-and-steel hotel designed by Frank Gehry. The guided visit covers the winery's history and methods and ends with a tasting of 4 of its emblematic wines.
Bodegas Ysios
Ysios is one of Rioja's best-known modern buildings. Santiago Calatrava designed it, and its wave-shaped roof echoes the line of the Sierra de Cantabria. It counts among the most photographed wineries in the world. Inside, the visit explains the design and the architecture, then finishes with a tasting of one of Ysios' signature wines.
Bodegas Javier San Pedro Ortega
Javier San Pedro Ortega is a family-run boutique winery and stands for the newer wave of Rioja producers. The visit looks at how a younger generation mixes tradition with new methods and a strong focus on terroir. A guided tasting of four wines closes the stop, served with a selection of local Rioja appetizers.
Laguardia
The tour ends with a light tapas lunch in Laguardia, a medieval village with cobbled streets. The tapas are traditional and local, and there is time to walk around before the day wraps up.
