Wine Tours in the USA

All 60 US listings sit in Napa and Sonoma, from 45 to 1,255 EUR. Here is how to read an American label, a price and a tasting fee.

Every wine tour on the United States page of this site starts in one corner of California. All 60 listings leave from San Francisco or from a town in Napa or Sonoma, they come from 39 operators, and together they carry 13,754 reviews at a weighted 4.62. Nothing here goes to Oregon, Washington, New York or the Central Coast, and a page that pretended otherwise would be selling you something we do not have. So this page does the job a country page can do: it explains what is specific to American wine tours, how to read an American label, why a tour price is never the price of the day, and how the US sits against the other twelve countries we cover. The valleys themselves have their own page.

Two warnings before the detail. The 242 EUR figure is an honest median of the prices as listed, but the listings mix two units, a seat and a whole vehicle. And the catalogue is concentrated: one coach operator holds a third of all the reviews. Both change what the numbers mean.

Ratings collected by Viator, Tripadvisor and Civitatis

One destination, sixty listings

The tree of this site has three levels: country, destination, and the formats underneath. For the US the middle level holds a single entry, Napa & Sonoma, with three formats below it: day trips from San Francisco, Sonoma tours and private tours with a driver, twenty listings each. That is the whole American catalogue. Viator supplies 59 of the 60 listings and Civitatis one.

Concentration is high. Gray Line San Francisco holds 34% of all the reviews, almost all of them on one full-day coach tour, 4,612 reviews at 4.3. Take that operator out and the rest of the catalogue rates about 4.8. The headline 4.62 is therefore partly the score of a big coach and partly the score of small vans, bikes and limousines, and the two do not feel alike.

How US wine tours compare with other countries

Chart comparing the median wine tour price in 13 countries; USA at 242 EUR across 60 tours
Median wine tour price in 13 countries and the middle half of listings. The US bar runs from about 136 to 560 EUR, the widest on the chart. · Wine Tours Editorial, from the prices of the tours listed on this site

Read the chart from the bar, not the dot. The US dot sits at 242 EUR, level with Argentina and just above France at 232. The bar is the story: the middle half of US listings runs from 136 to 560 EUR, wider than any other country's. France has the same share of private listings, 45%, and a similar pull upward. Argentina gets to 242 by another road, with 80% of its listings private.

The US against the five countries closest to it in size or price. Medians of the prices as listed, read on 30 September 2026.

The table is the reason to be careful with the word expensive. Take the private cars out and the two US group formats sit at 152 and 159 EUR, a little above Australia and Canada and well above Chile. A day in wine country near San Francisco costs more than one near Santiago, before any tasting fee is counted. The French, Australian, Canadian, Chilean and Argentine pages show the same comparison from their side.

What "as listed" means for a price

A seat on a coach and a whole SUV are both shown as a number of euros, and only the listing says which one you are buying. On this catalogue the private vehicles say it in the title. The SUV sold by Wine Tour Pros is 806 EUR for up to 6 guests: 134 EUR a head if six share it, 403 EUR if two do. The Sprinter van from the same operator, up to 14 guests, is 1,166 EUR. Nothing on the coach listings works this way, so when you compare a 139 EUR coach day with a 605 EUR private car, divide the second by the people you will actually bring.

A private price is a price for the vehicle. The group price is a price for you.

The tour price and the tasting fee are two bills

In Europe a cellar visit usually comes with the tasting inside the price. In Napa and Sonoma the two are often separate, and the listings do not agree with each other. The Gray Line full-day tour says all tasting fees at three wineries are included, an estimated 120 USD of value. The Tower Tours half day says two wineries and no additional fees. The Sonoma open-air trolley, at 130 EUR with lunch, does not include them and warns to expect 30 to 40 USD at each stop. The private SUV and limousine listings we opened leave them out too, in one case in capitals.

The prices at the door explain why it matters. Visit Napa Valley puts a basic tasting at around 40 USD, with a range from 20 to more than 200. Charles Krug charges 50 USD for its Estate tasting, 75 for the Cabernet flight, 90 for the tour and tasting, and takes everything by appointment, prepaid. In Sonoma, Cline Family Cellars asks 25 USD at the bar and 35 seated, and Gundlach Bundschu 30 USD at the bar. The Napa & Sonoma page adds the full day up.

Vineyard rows and rolling hills at sunset in Santa Barbara County, California

American wine beyond Napa and Sonoma

The largest American regions outside the catalogue each answer a different question. Oregon's Willamette Valley, south of Portland, is Pinot Noir country. Washington's vineyards mostly lie east of the Cascades, in far drier land than the state's reputation for rain suggests. The Central Coast of California, where the vineyard in this picture sits in Santa Barbara County, is warm hills cooled in places by Pacific air. New York's Finger Lakes are the country's Riesling region.

None of these is in the catalogue, and we would rather say so than fill the page with place names. If you are choosing between them and Napa on the strength of a label you liked, the next section is the part that applies everywhere.

Reading an American wine label

An American Viticultural Area, or AVA, is a place on a map with a legal boundary, not a grade of quality. The federal rule is simple: a wine that names an AVA must contain at least 85% grapes grown inside it. The first AVA approved was Augusta, in Missouri, on 20 June 1980. Napa Valley followed on 28 January 1981 as the first in California. Sonoma County alone holds 19 AVAs, and Napa Valley has more than a dozen nested inside it. The exact count moves with the source and the year, so ignore anyone who gives it to you as a fixed number.

What common words on an American label do and do not promise.
On the label What it tells you
An AVA, such as Napa ValleyAt least 85% of the grapes come from inside that area. It says where, not how good.
A grape name, such as Cabernet SauvignonAt least 75% of that grape under the federal rule. The rest can be something else.
"Reserve"Nothing the law defines. It is the winery's own word, so the price of the flight is the real information.
A county or state name onlyA wider area than an AVA. It is usually the cheaper bottle.

Getting there and getting home

Napa is about 50 miles from San Francisco, and Visit Napa Valley puts the drive at one to two hours depending on traffic. It lists the VINE bus and a ferry-and-bus route via Vallejo for people without a car. The legal limit for drivers in California is 0.08% blood alcohol, and several tastings in a day add up. That is the practical case for a tour, and 60% of these listings include pickup.

Tastings are for people aged 21 and over; the listings we opened say so, and several add that infants can ride along on an adult's lap. Appointments are the other American habit. Visit Napa Valley warns that some of the most requested tasting rooms fill weeks ahead, and suggests two or three wineries a day at 90 minutes or more each. A tour that takes care of that booking is worth part of its price.

Questions about wine tours in the United States

Are there wine tours in Oregon, Washington or New York on this site?

No. All 60 US listings are in Napa and Sonoma, most of them leaving from San Francisco. Other American regions are not in the catalogue, and we do not list a tour we cannot price and read.

Do I have to be 21?

For the tasting, yes. The listings we opened set a minimum drinking age of 21. Some let infants ride on an adult's lap, but the glass itself is for adults only.

Is the tip included?

In the listings we opened it is not. Gratuities are listed under not included on the Tower half-day coach, the Sonoma trolley, the small-group van and the private SUV listings. Plan for it as a separate line on the day.

Is a tour cheaper than driving myself?

For one or two people, usually yes once you count a driver's abstinence, parking and the tastings that some tours include. For a group of five or six, a private vehicle can come to less per head than a coach day, but check whether it includes the tastings; most do not.

How far ahead should I book?

For a coach or small group, days are usually enough outside harvest. For a private driver in September or October, weeks. Napa's popular tasting rooms fill well ahead, and Charles Krug takes all tastings by appointment only.

Why is the median the same as Argentina's?

By coincidence of mix. Both sit at 242 EUR across 60 listings, but the US gets there from a wide spread of group seats and private vehicles, Argentina from a catalogue that is four-fifths private.
