Napa and Sonoma Day Trips from San Francisco
Twenty day trips from 98 to 986 EUR. One bus holds half the reviews, and the next four rate 4.8 or 4.9 and cost from 14 EUR less to 22 EUR more.
Half of all the reviews on this page belong to one company's buses. Gray Line San Francisco's full-day coach to Napa and Sonoma has 4,612 reviews at 4.3, and with its two other listings the operator holds 50% of the 9,173 on the page. The small-group days just behind it rate 4.8 and 4.9. So when you search for a Napa and Sonoma day trip from San Francisco, the first question is not which wine country but which kind of vehicle. This page compares the 20 listings that leave from the city, from 98 to 986 EUR with a median of 152: the coach, the small groups, the half days, the cruise excursion, the combos with a sightseeing ticket and five private cars. The valleys and the history are on the Napa & Sonoma page.
A day trip is 8 or 9 hours, of which the road takes a large part. Napa is about 50 miles from the city, one to two hours each way by Visit Napa Valley's estimate. What is left for the wine is the question to ask of any listing on this page.

Ratings collected by Viator, Tripadvisor and Civitatis
The bus that decides the average
Take Gray Line's three listings out and the other 17 rate about 4.7. That is not a complaint about Gray Line; 4.3 over 4,612 reviews is a reliable number, and the coach is one of only two listings here that says all tasting fees at three wineries are included, worth an estimated 120 USD. It is a description of what you buy at 139 EUR: a large coach, a fixed route, a lunch break in Sonoma Plaza (time to buy lunch, not a meal), and three tastings on the operator's list.
Price moves the rating more than anything else in the set. Five of the seven shared listings under 130 EUR rate 4.3 or lower; the two that do not are Painted Ladies at 125 EUR, 4.9, and a 29-review listing at 114 EUR. Above 130 EUR, four of the six shared listings with more than 100 reviews rate 4.8 or 4.9; the exceptions are the Gray Line coach and a 169 EUR half day at 4.4.
| Listing | Price (EUR) | Hours | Rating (reviews) | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gray Line full-day coach | 139 | 8 | 4.3 (4,612) | Tastings at 3 wineries included; Fisherman's Wharf or Union Square |
| Edge of the World, Sonoma Wine Country | 151 | 9.5 | 4.9 (1,664) | The longest day in the set; no lunch listed |
| Green Dream, small group | 161 | 9 | 4.8 (707) | Lunch flagged |
| Jupiter Legend, premium small group | 133 | 8 | 4.9 (548) | Cheapest 4.9 over 500 reviews |
| Painted Ladies Wine Country Tour | 125 | 7 | 4.9 (380) | Shortest 4.9 of the group |
| Tower Tours half day | 98 | 5.5 | 4.2 (308) | 2 wineries, all fees included, leaves after lunch |
| Tower Tours full day | 126 | 9 | 4.3 (271) | The same operator, the long version |
What eight hours are made of
Do the sum once. Visit Napa Valley suggests two or three wineries a day, at 90 minutes or more each. Three stops at 90 minutes is four and a half hours. Add the drive, one to two hours in each direction, and a lunch break, and you have used the 8 or 9 hours and left nothing for traffic on the bridge. That is why the operators build the day on three winery stops at most, and why the half days stop at two.
The Tower Tours half day costs 98 EUR for 5.5 hours. It leaves Fisherman's Wharf just after lunch, visits two wineries with 3 to 5 tastings each and an estate tour, and includes every fee. It is two wineries where a full day has more, for 28 EUR less than the same operator's full day.
The first hour is the bridge
The coach itineraries we opened all start by crossing the Golden Gate, with a photo stop at the vista point on the north side. Sausalito comes next, then the road up into the hills.
Gray Line gives two boarding points: Fisherman's Wharf at 9:00, with check-in by 8:45, and Union Square at 8:40, check-in by 8:25. Hotel pickup is not part of the price.
Coach, small group, half day or private
| Kind | Listings | Price (EUR) | Length | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Large coach, full day | 4 | 126 to 259 | 8 to 9 hours | Three wineries and a lunch break; Gray Line includes the fees. The 259 EUR one adds a food pairing |
| Small group or van, full day | 6 | 114 to 161 | 7 to 9.5 hours | The 4.8 and 4.9 group, with three wineries on most |
| Half day, shared | 4 | 98 to 169 | 5 to 6.5 hours | Two wineries, leaving after lunch or back before dinner |
| Bundle with a sightseeing ticket | 1 | 152 | 4 hours | A wine tour plus a 48-hour hop-on ticket for the city |
| Private vehicle | 5 | 343 to 986 | 6 to 9 hours | The car is yours; 3 to 18 reviews each |
Two of the listings are not quite wine days. The Big Bus bundle at 152 EUR couples a wine tour with a 48-hour hop-on ticket for the city, and the Tower shore excursion, 126 EUR for 9 hours, is sold to cruise passengers who need to be back at the ship. They suit the people they are made for and are poor value for anyone else.
Private from the city
Five listings here are private, from 343 to 986 EUR. All five have between 3 and 18 reviews, so treat their ratings as anecdotes, not evidence. The 343 EUR XL SUV for 8 hours is the cheapest; the 417 EUR Gray Line private tour takes up to 15 people on a luxury coach for 9 hours and includes the tastings at three wineries; the VW van with a sommelier is 986 EUR.
The price is for the vehicle. The Private Napa Wine Tours with a Driver page has 20 more, with 1,731 reviews at 4.89, and the three we opened leave the tasting fees out. The 417 EUR Gray Line tour is unusual for that reason, and worth a look for a group of four or more.
What the winery end looks like
The Gray Line Wine & Food option, for people who want a pairing, goes to Castello di Amorosa and Artesa, with tastings worth an estimated 200 USD, and leaves out the Sonoma lunch stop. The standard option visits three of six wineries from a list that includes Artesa, Jacuzzi, Madonna, Roche, BR Cohn and Robledo.
In practice, pick the listing by its winery promise. The one that names two estates and an estate tour gives you a different half day from one that names a wine region and leaves the choice to the driver. The Sonoma wine tours cover the alternative: one valley, on a bike or a trolley.
How to choose and what to check
If the cheapest day with tastings included is the aim, take the Tower Tours full day at 126 EUR or the Gray Line coach at 139. If the rating matters, Painted Ladies at 125 EUR for 7 hours or Jupiter Legend at 133 EUR for 8 hours are the best value in the set. If you want the day to finish early, the Tower half day is the one. If you are travelling for the valley and not the city, leave the combos alone.
The cheapest listings here are the ones most likely to be a sightseeing day with winery stops, not the other way round.
Check four things before paying. Whether the tasting fees are in the price: the Gray Line and Tower listings say so, the Sonoma trolley does not. Whether hotel pickup is included: 9 of the 20 listings say yes, the Gray Line coach no. The real winery count: the catalogue flags lunch on five listings, but the Gray Line one gives free time, not a meal. And the cancellation window, which for the Gray Line coach is a full refund up to 24 hours before.
Questions about Napa and Sonoma day trips from San Francisco
Is a Napa and Sonoma day trip from San Francisco worth it?
Yes, if you start in the city and do not want to drive. The road takes one to two hours each way, so you get about three tastings. For fewer hours on the road, the Sonoma tours start inside the wine country.
Gray Line or a small group?
Gray Line is 139 EUR with the fees included and a 4.3 rating across 4,612 reviews. Small groups cost 125 to 161 EUR, rate 4.8 or 4.9, and usually list the tastings in the itinerary. Check the not-included list on the small group.
Are tastings included?
On the Gray Line coach, the Tower Tours half day and the Gray Line private tour, yes. On the Sonoma trolley, no. On the private cars in the sister page, usually not. The not-included list is the place to look.
Where do the tours leave from?
Gray Line boards at Fisherman's Wharf at 9:00 or Union Square at 8:40. Tower Tours' half day leaves from Jefferson and Mason streets at Fisherman's Wharf. Nine of the 20 listings include a hotel pickup.
Is lunch included?
The catalogue flags five listings with lunch. On the Gray Line coach, what the listing gives is free time for lunch in Sonoma Plaza, not a meal. Bring some money for it.
Can children come?
The listings we opened let infants ride, sitting on an adult's lap, but the minimum age for wine tasting is 21. A child on the tour watches the tastings.
Want the car to yourself?
Private tours with a driver, priced per vehicle, from 224 EUR. Divide by the people in the car before you compare.
