Sonoma Wine Tours: Bikes, Trolley, Vans, 20 Compared
Only seven of 20 put you in a van or car. Prices run 45 to 1,255 EUR, median 159, and the trolley's 130 EUR leaves out the tastings.
Only seven of the twenty Sonoma wine tours on this page put you in a van or a private car. Six are bicycles, three of them electric, and the rest are a trolley, an electric trike, a Segway, a sidecar motorbike, a walking tour and two sessions inside a tasting room. That is the point of Sonoma wine tours as a format: the price is a choice of vehicle more than a choice of vineyard. The 20 listings run from 45 to 1,255 EUR with a median of 159, run 5 hours at the median, and half of them include lunch. One operator, the Sonoma Valley Wine Trolley, holds 31% of the 2,850 reviews. This page sorts the listings by how you move, adds up what each costs per hour, and says where the tasting fee is missing from the price.
The group tours that run in Sonoma are not the coach days from the city covered on the day trips page. Here you start in the wine country, at the Plaza in the town of Sonoma or in Healdsburg, and most of the day is tasting, cycling or riding, not driving.

Twenty listings, six ways to move
| How you move | Listings | Price (EUR) | Length (hours) | Lunch flagged |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bike or e-bike | 6 | 152 to 211 | 4 to 6 | 4 of 6 |
| Small-group van in Sonoma | 3 | 135 to 136 | 5 to 7 | 3 of 3 |
| Open-air trolley | 1 | 130 | 6.5 | Yes, tastings extra |
| Electric trike, Segway, sidecar | 3 | 135 to 350 | 3 to 6.5 | 2 of 3 |
| Walking tour, Healdsburg | 1 | 125 | 4 | Not flagged |
| Tasting-room session | 2 | 45 to 135 | 1.5 to 2.5 | Not flagged |
| Private car or limousine | 3 | 281 to 668 | 4 to 8 | Not flagged |
| Small group from San Francisco | 1 | 1,255 | 9 | Not flagged |
The table hides one unit problem. The private cars are priced per vehicle, and the 1,255 EUR listing, run from San Francisco, sets a minimum of 4 people and a maximum of 14. A price seven times the next group tour is very probably for the whole group, not for one seat, though the listing does not say so in as many words. Check the unit before you read it as a bargain or an outrage.
Look at the cluster. Thirteen of the 20 listings sit between 125 and 215 EUR and between 3 and 7 hours. The median line at 159 EUR runs through the middle of a crowd, which is why the middle half of prices is narrow, 135 to 228 EUR. Everything interesting is either below the cluster, the 45 EUR Healdsburg pairing, or above it.
The cheapest day is a van, not a bike
| Listing | Price (EUR) | Hours | EUR per hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| Platypus small-group winery tour | 136 | 7 | 19 |
| Open-air trolley, tastings extra | 130 | 6.5 | 20 |
| Join-in group tasting tour | 135 | 5 | 27 |
| Full-day e-bike with lunch | 178 | 6 | 30 |
| Half-day e-bike with lunch | 152 | 4 | 38 |
| Segway tour with lunch | 135 | 3.5 | 39 |
| Electric trike | 157 | 3 | 52 |
A bike day costs more per hour than a van day. The Sonoma bike tours sit between 152 and 211 EUR, and four of the six include lunch. The van tours from Platypus and Sonoma Wine Rides are 135 or 136 EUR for 5 to 7 hours, all with lunch. The electric trike is the dearest by the hour, at 52 EUR, and is the most fun for those who want it: the listing has 359 reviews at 4.8. Five of the six bike tours and the Segway rate 4.9 or 5.0, on 27 to 171 reviews each, so the extra price is buying something people like.
Pay for the vehicle you want to be in. The wine is the same in the van and on the bike.
Sonoma Plaza and Healdsburg, the two bases
The listings start from two places. The town of Sonoma is where the trolley meets, at the Town Hall on the Plaza, and four listings say Sonoma Valley in the title: the trolley, the Platypus small-group tour, the pedal-assist bike tour with lunch and the sidecar. Healdsburg, in the north of the county, is named in five titles: a walking wine and food pairing tour at 125 EUR, a bike tour with lunch at 187 EUR, a cycling tour at 178 EUR, the private Howling Wine Tours at 668 EUR and a wine and food pairing session at Williamson Wines for 45 EUR.
Santa Rosa, between them, is named by two more: a Platypus small-group tour at 136 EUR and a bike and wine tour at 211 EUR. Pick the base that is nearer your hotel: each day is built around one of them.
What the trolley is, and what it leaves out
The Sonoma Valley Open Air Wine Trolley is a vehicle made to look like a San Francisco cable car, and it is the best-known listing here: 880 reviews at 4.6, 31% of the page. It costs 130 EUR and covers a charter fee, taxes and lunch. It does not cover the tastings, which the listing says to expect at 30 to 40 USD each, or pickup from San Francisco. The description counts three wineries, while the itinerary paragraph counts four, so ask which one you get.
The day runs from 10:00 to about 4:30. Guests meet between 10:00 and 10:15 in front of the Town Hall on the Plaza, and the trolley leaves at 10:15. Alcohol may not be drunk on board, it runs in all weather, and the minimum age is 21. Budget for 130 EUR plus 90 to 160 USD of tastings, and a tip.
Walk-in is the Sonoma habit
Sonoma tasting rooms are easier than Napa's to walk into. Cline Family Cellars prices its bar at 25 USD and its seated tasting at 35, and recommends a reservation for the seat, not for the bar. Gundlach Bundschu charges 30 USD at the bar and up to 80 USD in the cave, and takes walk-ins on weekdays. That changes what a Sonoma tour is for. You do not need it to get in; you need it for the transport, the lunch and the ride.
That is also the case against the cheapest tasting-room sessions: the 45 EUR Williamson pairing in Healdsburg and the 135 EUR blend-your-own-bottle session at Meadowcroft are about one room and two or three hours. They are not wine tours in the sense of the others on this page, and they are fine for what they are.
Private cars, and what they add
Three private listings are here, from 281 to 668 EUR for a vehicle, not a person: an XL SUV for 8 hours from San Francisco, a 4-hour limousine, and the Howling Wine Tours day of 6 hours in Sonoma and Healdsburg. For a group of four or more who want the tastings to be unhurried, they can cost less per head than a bike day. The private tours page goes through the arithmetic.
Check each one for lunch and tasting fees: the private cars we opened on the Napa side left both out.
How much the ratings can carry
Sonoma's 4.8 rests on small numbers. Only three listings have more than 350 reviews: the trolley with 880, the Healdsburg walking tour with 422 and the electric trike with 359. Everything else is between 13 and 177, and several of the 5.0 ratings belong to listings with fewer than 60 reviews. A 5.0 over 27 reviews and a 4.6 over 880 are not the same kind of evidence. Weigh them accordingly, and read the most recent reviews for the vehicle you plan to use.
Questions to ask before you pay
Five questions sort most of the twenty. Is the price for one person or a vehicle? Is lunch a meal or a break? Are the tasting fees in it? Does it start where you are staying? And how many stops are promised, given that the trolley gives two different answers?
Seven of the 20 include pickup. For the rest you get yourself to a meeting point, which for the trolley is the Plaza in Sonoma, with parking behind the Presidio of Sonoma at 98 East Spain Street.
Questions about Sonoma wine tours
Is Sonoma cheaper than Napa?
At the door, yes: Cline is 25 USD at the bar, Gundlach Bundschu 30, against 50 USD for the first tasting at Charles Krug in Napa. As a tour, the medians are close, 159 EUR here against 152 EUR for the San Francisco day trips.
Do Sonoma wineries take walk-ins?
Many do. Cline's bar takes walk-ins and Gundlach Bundschu does on weekdays. Seated tastings and busy weekends are better booked.
Are tasting fees included?
It depends on the listing. The trolley does not include them, and the 1,255 EUR group tour from San Francisco lists all three winery fees as included. Read the not-included list of each.
Is lunch included?
In 10 of the 20, including the trolley, all three Sonoma vans, four of the six bike tours and the Segway. The walking tour, the pairing sessions and the private cars are not flagged with lunch.
Can I do Sonoma from San Francisco?
Yes: the 1,255 EUR group tour picks up at hotels, and the 281 EUR XL SUV tour is sold from San Francisco. Most of the others start in Sonoma or Healdsburg.
How long is a Sonoma tour?
The median is 5 hours. The shortest is a 1.5 hour pairing, the longest a 9 hour group tour from the city. Most bike and Segway days are 3.5 to 6 hours.
Starting in San Francisco?
The day trips cross the Golden Gate and do both valleys, from 98 EUR with the tastings in the price.
