Wine Tours from Lisbon to Setúbal and Arrábida
32 tours from 17 to 470 EUR, in two formats that never overlap on price: 20 day trips from 70 EUR and 12 tastings up to 65 EUR.
Thirty-two listings carry the Lisbon name on this site, and they are two different products that never meet on price. The cheapest day trip to the Setúbal peninsula costs 70 EUR. Apart from one private sailboat, no tasting costs more than 65 EUR. The median of 115 EUR describes neither group, which is why this page starts by pulling them apart. One product is a seven-hour day across the Tagus to Azeitão, Palmela, Setúbal and the Serra da Arrábida, mostly private and nearly always with hotel pickup. The other is a two-hour tasting in the city. Below you will find what the peninsula makes, how far each town really is from Lisbon, what the tours leave out, and which of the two pages to open.
Every figure here was read from the listings on 30 September 2026. Many private tours are sold as one price for the booking, with a cap such as "up to 8 travelers", while group tours are priced per person; where the unit matters, the text says so.

Wine tours from Lisbon: two formats, no overlap in price
Put the 32 listings in a row by price and you find a gap. The 20 day trips start at 70 EUR and run to 420 EUR. The 12 tastings start at 17 EUR and, leaving out a private sailboat at 470 EUR, stop at 65 EUR. Nothing sits between 65 and 70, so the median of 115 EUR falls in the gap between the two products instead of describing either.
The two products also answer different questions. A day trip is about the peninsula: cellars in Azeitão and Palmela, the fortified Moscatel of Setúbal, a drive along the Serra da Arrábida and usually a long lunch. A tasting is about Portuguese wine in general, poured in a bar or a shop, with a guide who has never seen your hotel. The first page is Arrábida and Setúbal wine tours from Lisbon, the second is Lisbon wine tastings.
| Format | Tours | Median price | Typical length | Pickup from a hotel | Private share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Day trip to Arrábida, Setúbal, Azeitão | 20 | 137 EUR | 7 hours | 85% | 75% |
| Wine tasting in or near Lisbon | 12 | 47.50 EUR | 2 hours | none | 8% (one boat) |
| All 32 listings | 32 | 115 EUR | 6 hours | 53% | 50% |
The chart makes the point at a glance. The bar for day trips covers 115 to 178 EUR, the middle half of the twenty listings. The bar for tastings covers 28 to 61 EUR. The distance between the top of one and the bottom of the other is about 54 EUR, which is about the price of a full city tasting on its own.
Setúbal, Azeitão and Palmela: what the peninsula makes
The Península de Setúbal has around 9,000 hectares of vines, according to the regional commission (CVRPS), and its wines come in three recognisable styles that the tours string together. Azeitão is the village the day trips are built around: José Maria da Fonseca, founded there in 1834 and now in its seventh generation according to one operator's listing, and Bacalhôa, whose tour pours three wines. Palmela is red wine country: the regional rules for the Palmela denomination ask for at least 67% Castelão in the reds. Setúbal itself is the home of Moscatel de Setúbal, a fortified wine that must be at least 85% Moscatel.
Quinta do Alcube, which appears on some itineraries, dates from 1913. In Palmela, a wine-route house gathers 24 wineries of the region under one roof, so a tasting there is the quickest way to compare them.
A peninsula day is not one wine. It is a sandy plain, a limestone hill and a sweet fortified specialty, tasted in that order.
Limestone on the hill, sand on the plain
The soil does most of the explaining. The regional commission describes sand on the plains and limestone and clay in the Serra da Arrábida, under a Mediterranean climate with an Atlantic influence on the hills. The photo shows the bay at the foot of the Serra: a long beach, a rock islet and, behind them, the slope of the natural park that two of the private itineraries we read drive through.
Not every day trip is a long one. Three of the twenty last between four and five and a half hours.
How far it is from Lisbon
The map shows what the listings do not say. Measured in a straight line from central Lisbon, Azeitão is 24 km away, Palmela 26, Setúbal 30 and Sesimbra 30. Operators quote 30 to 40 minutes by road to Setúbal, and the variable is traffic on the 25 de Abril bridge, which the itineraries we read cross on the way south. Plan the return with some slack.
On the north shore of the map, Sintra and Colares belong to another wine area: Colares is known for vines planted in sand. None of the 32 listings names it in its title. The one tasting that sounds like a day trip, a family winery near Bombarral, starts about 60 km north of the city and is not in the peninsula at all.
Three dates worth knowing
The wine side of the peninsula in four dates, from the producers' own listings and the regional commission.
The origins
1834
José Maria da Fonseca opens in Azeitão
The cellar that most day trips include. The listings call it one of the oldest family-owned cellars in Portugal.
1907
The Setúbal denomination is delimited
The regional commission describes it as the second oldest demarcated wine region in the country.
The growth
1913
Quinta do Alcube starts making wine
A small family estate that appears on the private Setúbal itineraries.

About 9,000 hectares and a shared tasting room

Getting there, and the Monday problem
Lisbon is where you start, not where the wine is
The photo shows the Belém Tower at low tide, one of the sights the private sailboat tasting passes on the river. The day trips leave the city by road instead, and the itineraries we read cross the 25 de Abril bridge on the way south.
Most of them collect you. Pickup is offered on 85% of the day trips but on none of the tastings, where you walk to a bar or shop: a central Lisbon address for the main tasting operator, a shop near Santa Apolónia station for a port tasting. We have not checked bus or train timetables to the peninsula and do not quote them, because the cellars are in different villages and the drink-driving limit in Portugal is 0.5 g/l (0.2 for new and professional drivers).
One practical note that only the listings give. The fresh-produce market in Setúbal, a common stop, is closed on Mondays, and one of the most reviewed private tours has no lunch option on that day.
Which format to book
Book a day trip if you want to see where the wine comes from, taste Moscatel and eat a meal. Group days run 70 to 150 EUR with a median of 76, and private days run 115 to 420 EUR with a median of 140. Lunch is included on only 3 of the 20, so budget for it.
Book a tasting if you have a free evening, no car and two hours. You learn about six Portuguese regions from one table, which is more range than the peninsula offers. You do not see a vineyard. If a listing is called a tasting "from Lisbon", check the meeting point before paying: it may not be in Lisbon.
Questions about wine tours from Lisbon
Is a Setúbal day trip worth it if I have only one wine day?
Yes, if you want cellars and scenery in the same day and can spare seven hours. The peninsula is 24 to 30 km from Lisbon, so little time is lost on the road. If your wine day is for learning rather than seeing, a tasting in the city covers more regions in two hours.
How much does a wine tour from Lisbon cost?
The median across all 32 listings is 115 EUR, but that blends two markets. Day trips run 70 to 420 EUR with a median of 137 EUR. City tastings run 17 to 65 EUR, plus one private sailboat at 470 EUR. Private prices are often for the booking, not per head, so check the traveller cap.
Can I visit the wineries without a tour?
Possibly, but we have not verified public transport to the cellars, and they sit in different villages. Portugal's limit is 0.5 g/l, and 0.2 for new and professional drivers, so driving yourself after several tastings is a poor plan. Most day trips include hotel pickup and a driver.
Is lunch included in the day trips?
Rarely: 3 of the 20. Most tours stop at a restaurant and leave the bill to you, sometimes at Portinho da Arrábida, on the sea. One popular private tour has no lunch option on Mondays, so ask before you book that day.
What is Moscatel de Setúbal?
A fortified sweet wine from the Setúbal area. Under the regional rules it must be at least 85% Moscatel. It is the regional specialty and the reason many visitors come, so ask for it in the cellar.
Are there half-day options?
Two of the twenty day trips last four hours, one 98 EUR in a group and one 122 EUR private. They suit a late start or a departing flight. Most of the rest last six to nine hours, and two run the full nine.
