Private Setúbal Wine Tour from Lisbon: Palhoça and Ermelinda Freitas Wineries
This private tour takes you south of Lisbon into the Setúbal wine region, with two historic wineries on the route. At each one you taste wines made on the spot, alongside local grape varieties and regional food. The vine plain here is known for the quality of its grapes. It was split into small farms after the railway arrived in 1861, and a layer of soft sand over clay soil sets it apart. The Tagus and Sado rivers temper the microclimate, which helps the grapes ripen well. The tour is private, so the only people with the guide are you and your group.

Ponte 25 de Abril
After pickup at your Lisbon accommodation, the route crosses the 25 de Abril bridge, the city's answer to the Golden Gate, and heads south to Palmela and Poceirão, through vines and farm fields.
Filipe Palhoca Wines
Filipe Palhoça Vinhos is a family story of vines passed from father to son. Filipe Jorge Palhoça founded the business in 1950, building on a small winery run by his father, João Loureiro Palhoça. It sits in the Poceirão area of Palmela, inside the Setúbal Peninsula wine region. Today the family farms 112 hectares across 11 properties in Poceirão, Fernando Pó and Marateca. You taste their wines here.
For your lunch
Lunch is at a local family restaurant in the Poceirão area, run by a fisherman and his family. The focus is fresh local fish, and other dishes are available too. Another local restaurant may be used if this one is unavailable.
Casa Ermelinda Freitas
Leonilde Freitas founded this winery in 1920. Her granddaughter Germana and then great-granddaughter Ermelinda carried it on, and Ermelinda gave Casa Ermelinda Freitas its name. After her husband's early death she ran it with her daughter Leonor, who later took over. It is one of few Portuguese wineries that has always had female leadership. The vineyard lies south of Lisbon on sandy soil much like beach sand, rich in water, which matters for ripening. Breezes from the Tejo and Sado rivers cool the vines in dry summers and soften the wines. Castelão, the signature grape of the Setúbal Peninsula, thrives in this sand and makes up 40% of the estate's vineyards.
