Chile wine tours from Santiago: 40 compared

Forty tours from 24 to 525 EUR, median 108. The most reviewed one, with 8,342 reviews, is a city day with a single winery.

One tour holds 8,342 of the 22,870 reviews on Chile's page: a ten-hour Valparaíso day at 67 EUR in which wine is a single stop, the tasting is included and lunch is not. That says a lot about what Chile wine tours are in this catalogue. There are 40 of them, all sold from Santiago, priced from 24 to 525 EUR with a median of 108. Below you will find the two valleys they reach, what a cellar ticket, a half day and a Valparaíso day each buy, how Chile's prices sit against the other twelve countries on the site, and the Carménère story told with dates. Colchagua, Aconcagua, Itata and Elqui are not in the catalogue, and the page says so.

Prices are per person as each provider lists them. Ten tours are private, and for those the listing does not always say whether the figure is per person or per car, so read the top of the range with that in mind. The two valley pages below go tour by tour. This one deals with the choice above them: what a Chile day is, what it costs against the rest of the world, and what the catalogue does not cover. Everything was read on 30 September 2026.

Forty tours, one starting point

Every Chile tour on this site is sold from Santiago, and together they reach just two places: the Maipo Valley south of the city and the Casablanca Valley on the way to the coast. That is a fact about the catalogue, not about the country. Chile has wine regions far from either, and a tour desk in Santiago does not sell them as day trips. What you get here is the slice of Chilean wine that fits between breakfast and dinner. Twenty tours sit in Maipo Valley Wine Tours, twenty in Casablanca Valley & Valparaíso Wine Tours, and the Maipo & Casablanca Valleys page helps you choose between the two.

What the catalogue leaves out

The rows in this photograph are in the Colchagua Valley, south of Santiago, where a Colchagua Wine Route was set up in 1996. Aconcagua lies north of the capital, Itata further south and Elqui in the far north. None of them has a tour in this catalogue, so there are no prices here to compare and no reviews to weigh.

We would rather say that than fill a grid with pages that have nothing to sell. If you want more than one day of Chilean wine, those regions deserve an itinerary of their own, arranged with the wineries directly. What this page can do is make the Santiago choice sharper.

Chile wine tours against the other twelve countries

Chart comparing the median wine tour price in 13 countries; Chile at 108 EUR across 40 tours
Median price of a wine tour in 13 countries; the bar is the middle half of listings. Chile is second from the bottom at 108 EUR, above only Georgia. · Wine Tours Editorial, from the prices of the tours listed on this site

Only Georgia is cheaper. Chile's median of 108 EUR compares with 242 EUR in neighbouring Argentina and 232 in France, and its middle half of listings runs from 71 to 146 EUR, a tight band. Spain, at 110 EUR, has a similar median but a far wider spread. Two things keep Chile low. Wineries sell their own short visits, from 24 EUR, and the Valparaíso day divides a driver's day among up to fifteen people. If you are weighing the two sides of the Andes, the Mendoza page shows the other side of that chart.

In Chile the cheapest item on the list is a cellar ticket and the most reviewed is a city tour. Neither is what most people picture when they type "wine tour".

Six kinds of Chile wine tour, sorted by what they contain

The 40 Chile listings grouped by what the tour is. Prices per person as listed, read on 30 September 2026.
Kind Listings Price (EUR) Length What you actually get
One winery, on foot524 to 631 to 2 hoursA guided visit to a single cellar: Cousiño Macul inside Santiago, Santa Rita, or an organic farm in Isla de Maipo. Too short to include the drive.
Half day to one famous name849 to 1213 to 5 hoursConcha y Toro, Undurraga or Santa Rita with the ride from Santiago. One estate, one tasting, a driver.
Sunset at a winery2105 to 1266 to 7.5 hoursTwo Alyan listings timed to end in the evening, one with six wines and a rustic dinner.
Full day in Maipo5121 to 5259 to 10 hoursFour or five cellars on the best documented days, sometimes lunch. The 525 EUR listing is a private ride on horseback with a country grill.
Valparaíso and Viña del Mar with a winery1355 to 3505 to 10 hoursA city day. Wine is usually one stop in Casablanca and lunch is normally paid separately.
Casablanca first780 to 2154 to 10 hoursThe wine leads: boutique cellars, a sparkling tasting, a Tanino restaurant lunch on two listings.

The table is ordered by ambition, not by price. Thirteen of the 40 are Valparaíso days in which the winery is one stop among many, and only 12 listings, the Casablanca-first days and the long Maipo days, put several cellars or the wine itself at the centre. If you came for wine, filter your own expectations before you filter by price.

Two operators hold 71% of the reviews

The weighted rating of 4.84 looks like the verdict of a whole country. It is mostly the verdict of two companies. Stamp's Tour runs four of the 40 listings and holds 49% of all reviews, Turistik runs four more with another 22%, and between them they account for 16,294 of the 22,870. The other 20 operators share the remaining 29%. That is not a reason to distrust the two big ones; their tours are the ones most people actually take. It is a reason to read the 4.84 as the satisfaction of a city day and a Maipo minibus, and to look harder at the smaller operators when you want something different, such as the organic farm in Isla de Maipo with 493 reviews and a 5.0.

A rating built on 11,000 reviews of two tours says little about the other 38.

Carménère, told with dates

Carménère is the grape Chile's wine trade leans on, and the story is usually told too neatly. It did not come back from extinction. It was already in Chilean vineyards, sold and grown under another name. The French ampelographer Jean-Michel Boursiquot identified it in 1994 as a variety being treated as Merlot, and the agriculture ministry recognised it officially in 1998. In France it had become rare after phylloxera. That is the whole of what we can source.

From the first vines to an official grape

Dates as given by Wikipedia's entries on Chilean wine and on Carménère; we did not find a primary source for the early ones.

The origins

  1. About 1554

    Vines arrive with the Spanish

Vitis vinifera is reported in Chile from around this date.

  2. Mid-1800s

    French varieties are planted

Growers import Bordeaux cuttings, and the Ochagavía estate is the name usually cited. Carménère is generally said to arrive in this period.

The growth

  1. 1994

    Carménère is identified

Jean-Michel Boursiquot shows that vines sold as Merlot are Carménère. The Casablanca Valley denomination is also set by decree this year.

  2. 1996

    Colchagua Wine Route

The valley south of Santiago organises its wineries into a route.

Today

  1. 1998

    Official recognition

The Chilean agriculture ministry recognises Carménère as a distinct variety.

What we do not claim: how many hectares there are today, what share of exports it takes, which estate makes the best one. A figure of 8,800 hectares circulates, but it dates from 2009, and the sources contradict each other on the rest. When a tour description says "the lost grape", read it as marketing.

Driving after the tasting, and getting there without a car

Chilean traffic law (Ley 18.290, article 115) treats 0.3 to 0.8 g/l as driving under the influence of alcohol and 0.8 g/l and above as drunkenness; we read the text on the Library of Congress legal site on 30 September 2026. A winery tasting of four wines can put a driver in the first band, which is one more reason the driver is usually included. If you go alone, Undurraga publishes its own directions: buses from Estación Central or Terminal San Borja to Talagante, then the estate, about 45 minutes from Santiago. Cousiño Macul needs no bus at all, since it sits in Peñalolén inside the city.

Questions about Chile wine tours

Is a Valparaíso day trip a wine tour?

Usually not. Thirteen of the 40 listings are Valparaíso days, and the biggest one, with 8,342 reviews at 67 EUR, stops at one Casablanca winery for a tasting and does not include lunch. Its own notes add that asking to be dropped at the port means missing the winery. Choose it for the city, not for the wine.

Can I visit a Chilean winery without a tour?

Yes. Wineries sell their own visits. On 30 September 2026 Undurraga listed a one-hour tour at 29,500 CLP with English times at 10:00 and 15:00, and Cousiño Macul runs visits inside Santiago at Peñalolén. Both are cheaper than the half-day trips, but you arrange your own transport.

How far are the wine areas from Santiago?

The Maipo estates are roughly 40 to 45 minutes away, according to the tour descriptions and Undurraga's own page. Casablanca is about 75 km from Santiago and Valparaíso about 120 km. We did not time the bus journeys, so treat those distances as a guide.

Is Chile cheaper than Argentina for wine tours?

On this site, yes: 108 EUR median against 242. The catalogues are not built the same way, though. Chile's 40 include five cellar tickets under 65 EUR and a sprinkling of city days, which pull the median down. Compare like with like by format, using the table above.

What is Carménère?

A red grape identified in Chile in 1994, where it had been sold as Merlot, and officially recognised in 1998. It is tied to Chile in the trade's mind, although the vine comes from France. Tasting it in Maipo is easy; how much of it each tour pours is something the listings rarely say.

Can I drive myself between wineries?

You can, but the law is strict: 0.3 g/l already counts as driving under the influence, and 0.8 g/l as drunkenness. A tasting of several wines can reach that. Most visitors leave the driving to a guide, a taxi or an organised tour.
