Quinta da Corrieira is a small family-run winery about 10 km from the centre of Lisbon. It works with Carcavelos, one of the rarest wine styles in Portugal. The visit is guided and starts outdoors, among the vineyards, then moves into the winery. Guests learn how Carcavelos is made, from the native grape varieties to the long ageing in traditional barrels that gives this historic fortified wine its character. The tasting covers at least 3 wines: local Lisbon table wines and the fortified Carcavelos wines that are the region's specialty. An experienced wine guide leads the tour, or one of the owners does. The winery is small and the groups are small, so the visit is personal and relaxed, with plenty of explanation. The estate dates from the late 1970s and is dedicated to keeping the Carcavelos tradition alive. The Lewerentz family runs it today. They moved to Portugal eight years ago to carry on this winemaking heritage.
