Napa and Sonoma Valley make up California's top wine region, and this tour is led by a guide with industry expertise. Booking offers two options that differ in length and in the number of wineries. Both start at 99 Jefferson Street, Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco. Half-day trip (6 hours) The trip leaves just after noon and crosses the Golden Gate Bridge, where the guide talks about the landmark and other San Francisco sights. Past Sausalito the city gives way to open, green wine country. After about an hour's drive comes the first winery, with a guided tour of the estate's history and of fermentation, barrel aging and bottling. Two wineries are visited in all, with a tasting of 3 to 5 signature blends at each, led by an expert. The way back to San Francisco may end with a sunset over the Pacific Ocean, and the group parts at the starting point. Full-day trip (9 hours) The day begins in the morning with a short mini city tour, across the Golden Gate Bridge and through Sausalito into wine country. The first winery is about an hour's drive away, with an introduction to local winemaking traditions and history. Three wineries are visited, with 3 to 5 tastings at each. At midday the group breaks from tasting in downtown Sonoma for free time and lunch near the town square, with boutique shops and local art galleries to browse. The tour finishes in the afternoon and returns to San Francisco.
