This Champagne day trip is led by its owner-operator, a Champagne expert and native English speaker. The tour is never scripted and is adapted to each group, whatever its knowledge of Champagne. Solo travellers, couples, friends and families all join. The day mixes history, culture, vineyards and the processes behind the wine, and the tastings come after the explanations so they make sense. Guests meet producers and see the big houses. Anyone visiting at harvest time may watch juice run off a press. The day begins with a large or mid-sized house, which one depending on the schedule, and continues to Reims Cathedral, Hautvillers and a small producer.

What's included

  • Pick up and drop off in central Paris
  • Cellar Tours, small grower Champagne and one mid to big producer. Determined on availability.
  • Air-conditioned vehicle

Itinerary

  1. 91 Bd Saint-Germain, Paris

The Starbucks Café opens at 7 a.m., so early arrivals can get a coffee and croissant. The guide finds you in front of the café in a silver Citroën marked Champagne Tours, arriving around 7:15. Departure is no later than 7:30.

  2. Starbucks Odéon, Paris

Departure from the Starbucks at Odéon, where there is time for a coffee and croissant before the drive to Champagne.

  3. Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Reims

A recently restored cathedral where most kings since Clovis were crowned. Its stained glass was replaced by classic works, then by two modern artists: Marc Chagall, who kept his style, and Imi Knoebel, with cubic blocks of colour. The guide explains what to look for beforehand, so the visit itself can be fairly quick.

  4. Champagne Lanson

The day starts with a mid-sized or large house, depending on availability. In the morning it may be Lanson, Pommery, Taittinger, Veuve Clicquot or Mumm. In the afternoon it may be Mercier, Boizel, Moët & Chandon (often full), Charles Mignon or Nicolas Feuillatte in Chouilly. Otherwise smaller producers step in. Booking early improves the odds of a popular house, and each has its own cellars.

  5. Abbaye Saint-Pierre d'Hautvillers

Where the idea of Champagne was born, and the methods written down by Dom Pierre Perignon still hold. A short guided visit of the church explains its part in that history. The van then drives through the village to a picnic area, for photos, a picnic or a glass of Champagne.

  6. Avenue de Champagne

A drive along the avenue called the richest in the world, with lunch options and some time alone. The guide points out the best places on the way to Reims. In good weather a picnic at the Hautvillers viewpoint is possible, with lunch bought at a local bakery and tablecloth and glasses provided.

  7. Villers-sous-Chatillon

An intimate visit to a small producer, often the highlight of the day. Plenty to learn, see and taste.

  8. Paris

The drive back to Paris. Traffic is usually fine until around EuroDisney, then often dense. Drop-off is possible at or before Notre-Dame, coming in via the Rive Droite from Pont d'Austerlitz, or at the pickup point.

  9. 91 Bd Saint-Germain, Paris
