An afternoon wine tour with a lunch stop, suited to anyone who wants the knowledge and contacts that a winemaker guide brings. It is compact, with time for lunch at a winery at your own cost. The group visits three to four wineries, which can include the Makana chocolate shop. Lunch at a vineyard restaurant is usually the high point for half-day guests. There is an itinerary, but the guide invites the group to suggest wineries and vineyards. If you have a favourite wine, say so and the guide will try to take you there. Cloudy Bay, Fromm and Hans Herzog are not part of this tour. The operator can upgrade a booking to the Full-day Winemaker's Tour, which adds an informative vineyard stop and a behind-the-scenes look at a modern working winery.

What's included

  • Lunch stop during the tour - however at your own cost
  • Air-conditioned vehicle
  • Free door-to-door collection and drop off from Blenheim/Renwick areas
  • All wine tasting fees

  1. Marlborough Region

Marlborough is New Zealand's largest wine region, across the sunny Wairau and Awatere Valleys at the top of the South Island, with more than 150 wineries. It made New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc famous and is also known for Pinot Noir, aromatic whites and traditional method sparkling wine. The climate is one of the country's sunniest and driest. Tastings range from small family cellar doors to international brands, sometimes straight from the barrel with the winemakers.

  2. Saint Clair Family Estate Vineyard Kitchen

Saint Clair Vineyard Kitchen is a well-loved winery restaurant set among the vines at one of the region's most awarded producers. Lunch follows a seasonal menu of fresh local produce, in a courtyard and garden beside rows of Sauvignon Blanc. Guests can taste Saint Clair's range, including Pinot Noir and aromatics, with views across the Wairau Valley.

  3. Hunter's Wines Cellar Door & Wine Shop

Hunter's is one of Marlborough's founding wine families. The cellar door is known for its hospitality and landscaped vineyard gardens. The tasting runs through its Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, aromatics and traditional method sparkling wine, all from Wairau Valley grapes, with knowledgeable staff guiding each pour. Tastings are often held outside in the garden.

  4. Allan Scott Family Winemakers

Allan Scott Family Winemakers is an established Marlborough estate that pairs a cellar door with a well-loved winery restaurant, set among the vines of the Wairau Valley. The wines cover Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, aromatics and traditional method sparkling. The restaurant serves seasonal, locally sourced dishes chosen to go with the wines, and is a favourite lunch stop.

  5. Makana Confections

At Makana Chocolate Factory, handmade chocolates are made by traditional methods and can be watched through viewing windows. Free tastings are available every day, and boxes can be bought to take home. It is a sweet, family-friendly break from wine.

  6. Framingham Wines

Framingham is one of Marlborough's original wine families, known for a warm welcome and a specialty in aromatic wines, including Riesling and Gewürztraminer, alongside classic Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. The cellar door sits in a relaxed garden, where knowledgeable staff pour the range. Some organic wines are also available to taste.

  7. Blenheim

Blenheim sits in the sunny Wairau Valley, surrounded by more than 150 wineries in New Zealand's largest wine region. Tours from here go from small family cellar doors to world-famous brands, often tasting from the barrel with the people who make the wine. The town also has local restaurants, cafes and craft breweries, and the Marlborough Sounds are nearby.
