Niagara wine, cheese and icewine tours: 13 compared

13 tours from 82 to 349 EUR, median 130. Only one has icewine in its title, and the cheapest cheese tours are the lowest rated.

Thirteen tours sit under the name wine, cheese and icewine, and exactly one of them has icewine in its title. It costs 349 EUR, has four reviews, and its own listing says the tastings are extra, at 20 to 35 CAD per person per winery. The rest are ordinary Niagara-on-the-Lake wine tours in which icewine is one pour among many and cheese is a board at one of the stops. That is not a complaint, only the thing to know before choosing among them. This page sorts the 13 by what is actually on the table and what the price buys. Who collects you and from where is on the page for Niagara-on-the-Lake wine tours.

Icewine appears in the description or the stop list of all 13 listings, but as a single pour in a flight and not as a product. Only the private day is built around it.

Niagara wine, cheese and icewine tours: what the price buys

Chart of the 13 Niagara Wine, Cheese & Icewine Tours listings by price and length, median 130 EUR
Each mark is one of the 13 tours, placed by length and price. Shared tours in red, private in blue. The median is 130 EUR. · Wine Tours Editorial, from the prices of the tours listed on this site

Hours and euros climb together, with one exception worth seeing. At four hours the shared tours cost 82 to 130 EUR. At five hours the price lands between 158 and 165 EUR, and the private 242 EUR day sits above it. The six-hour cheese and chocolate tour is 205 EUR. Then the order breaks: the only Toronto tour, at 9.5 hours, costs 191 EUR, less than the six-hour one, because most of its time is driving and not tasting. The dearest mark, 349 EUR for seven hours, is the private icewine day.

What icewine has to be

In Ontario icewine is a legal category, not a flattering name. The grapes freeze naturally on the vine, they are picked when the temperature is below -8 °C, and the juice has to reach at least 35 °Brix, which is about a third sugar by weight. The front label must name the growing area.

None of the 13 listings sells a visit to the harvest, because the freeze sets the date and not the calendar. What they sell is the finished wine. The closest thing to the conditions is the 242 EUR private tour, whose listing describes Peller Estates' 10Below lounge, a room built of ice and held at 10 degrees below zero.

Read across the table and two patterns show up. The cheaper the cheese, the lower the rating: the 92 and 102 EUR tours score 4.1 and 4.5, every tour from 130 EUR up scores 4.8 or better. And the group cap says why. The 102 EUR tour takes up to 30 guests per booking, the 130 EUR one takes six. A day at a table for six is a different product from a day in a coach of thirty, and the operators charge 28 EUR more for it.

The dearest tour on the page has no cheese at all, and the cheapest one with cheese costs 257 EUR less.

What a board at Between the Lines holds

The board described in most detail is the one at Between the Lines, the family winery on Four Mile Creek Road that turns up in four of these itineraries. Per the listing it comes with four wine tastings per person, three artisan cheeses, a selection of charcuterie from a local smokehouse, roasted nuts, dried fruit and crackers, with nut-free and gluten-free substitutions on request.

It is lunch only in the loosest sense. The 205 EUR tour calls it lunch. On the 242 EUR private tour the board is one stop of five, and the listing leaves the real lunch to you, with 45 minutes in Old Town to find it.

The cheapest and the dearest

The cheapest tour on this page, 82 EUR from Grape Escape Wine Tours, is also the one with most of the reviews: 718 at 4.9, which is 38% of the page. It visits three wineries in about four hours, includes no food, and says so: eat before you go. It has no cheese and no icewine in the title, and it is the most reviewed tour on the page.

The dearest is the private icewine day from Wheelz Niagara at 349 EUR. The listing offers up to five premium wineries or breweries over seven hours, says food, drink and attraction tickets are not included, and puts the tasting samples at 20 to 35 CAD per person per venue. Five venues at those rates add 100 to 175 CAD a head. It does not say whether 349 EUR is per person or for the vehicle, and with four reviews there is nothing to benchmark it against. Treat it as a quote request.

Three tours that are not quite wine and cheese

Nearly a quarter of the page is something else. A three-course dinner tour at 165 EUR is usually served at a winery restaurant, a lavender farm tour at 108 EUR adds a field of lavender to three wineries, and the 191 EUR Toronto day spends 9.5 hours door to door. They are good products with small audiences: 23, 8 and 11 reviews. If cheese is what you came for, skip them. If you want an evening or a day out of Toronto, they are the only ones of their kind here.

How the ratings look with and without one operator

The page averages 4.76 on 1,875 reviews. One tour drags it: the 102 EUR wine and cheese half day from Community Transport Group, 509 reviews at 4.5. Without it the other 12 tours carry 1,366 reviews at 4.86. The same operator has three more tours on the half-day page, so you will meet it again there at a similar score. Grape Escape and Out of Town Lincoln, which together hold 1,148 of the 1,875 reviews here, rate 4.9 and 4.83.

Small print that changes the day

All 13 listings offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure, which is not true of every region in this catalogue. The three cheapest tours, at 82, 92 and 102 EUR, each require two people per booking, so a solo traveller pays for a second seat or looks higher up the list. Everywhere the drinking age is 19. Two tours accept younger guests: the dinner tour from age 10 and the lavender tour from age 12. Gratuities are listed as extra wherever a listing mentions them, so budget a tip on top of the fare.

Questions about Niagara wine, cheese and icewine tours

What makes a wine icewine in Ontario?

The grapes must freeze naturally on the vine and be picked when the temperature is below -8 °C, and the juice must measure at least 35 °Brix. Artificial freezing does not count. The growing area has to appear on the front label. Other countries make Eiswein by the same idea, but the Ontario definition is the strict one.

Does a wine and cheese tour include a meal?

Usually not. Six of the 13 put a cheese or charcuterie board at one of the stops, and only two include lunch: the 205 EUR six-hour day and the Toronto tour. On the 82 EUR tour, nothing is served at all. A board is a generous snack, so have breakfast first and plan dinner.

Can I see icewine being harvested on a tour?

No listing sells it. The harvest happens when the grapes freeze and the temperature drops below -8 °C, so the date comes from the weather. What the tours offer is tasting the finished wine, including the small pour of icewine that most itineraries add near the end.

Is the private icewine day worth 349 EUR?

It is hard to say. The listing promises up to five wineries and a flexible plan, but it has four reviews, states that tastings cost 20 to 35 CAD each per person on top, and does not say whether the price is per person. Ask for a written total before booking and compare it with the 242 EUR private tour, which has a named route.

Which is the best value of the 13?

On the numbers, the 82 EUR Grape Escape tour for wine alone and the 130 EUR Fallsview tour for wine with food in a group of six, rated 5.0 on 46 reviews. The 102 EUR cheese tour has the most reviews after Grape Escape but the lowest rating of any tour with real volume.

Prefer a shorter day?

Eleven half-day tours run three to five and a half hours, from 82 EUR.
