This Yarra Valley public tour runs seven days a week, and the operator says it never cancels, which makes it a solid choice for a rainy day in Melbourne. The operator also claims thousands of five-star reviews. It grew out of years of private tours for friends, families and businesses. The public version keeps a fixed itinerary but leaves room to split the group, depending on whether people want wine, gin, food or chocolate. The day starts at the Ian Potter Centre on Flinders Street and moves between Soumah, St Huberts, lunch at Hubert Estate, the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and Balgownie Estate.

What's included

  • Driver with a good taste in music that takes requests

  1. Federation Square, Flinders St &, Russell St, Melbourne

The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia is on Flinders Street 3000 in the Melbourne CBD, not on Russell Street Extension. The vehicle parks opposite 154 Flinders Street or opposite 1 Hosier Lane, a well-known graffiti laneway worth a photo if you arrive early.

  2. The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia

The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, Flinders Street 3000, directly opposite 154 Flinders Street and a 2-minute walk from Flinders Street Railway Station. A guide greets guests at 8:35am beside a white 14-seater Mercedes-Benz bus or a 22-seater, checks them in and assigns seats. The bus leaves at 9am sharp, or earlier if everyone is there. Late arrivals cannot be waited for. If the group departs early, there may be a coffee stop halfway and a look for kangaroos, weather permitting.

  3. Yarra Valley

A 60-minute drive to the first winery: 30 minutes on the freeway, then 30 through countryside and vineyards, passing through the town of Warrandyte.

  4. Soumah

Visited every day. A guided tasting of five wines, among them Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Nebbiolo and Brachetto, with views over the vineyard's rolling hills and the Warramate Hills.

  5. St Huberts Cellar Door

Visited every day. Four of the cellar door's well-known wines are poured. Anyone who prefers can have a can of beer or cider instead. A gin or whisky tasting can be added for a small fee.

  6. Hubert Estate

Lunch at the Quarters restaurant, visited every day, plus a look at the indigenous art gallery on the floor below the cellar door. Food and drink are not included in the tour price, so guests order what they like. The menu mixes Modern Australian and European dishes, including steaks, fish, handmade pasta and woodfired pizza, with desserts from the pastry team. All dietary requirements are catered for. Guests who bring their own food must eat it outside the grounds.

  7. Domaine Chandon

On the way to lunch the bus can pull into Domaine Chandon, the Yarra Valley's home of sparkling wine, for a photo and a browse of the shop. No booking is needed for that. Guests who prefer lunch there must book in their own name, after asking the operator for the right time, and will miss the 11:30am St Huberts tasting. They are picked up at 1pm for the chocolate tasting. Lunch tables at Hubert Estate are booked every day; at Chandon nothing is booked.

  8. Yarrawood Estate

For anyone who skips the chocolate, the driver can take them to Yarrawood Estate Winery to buy a glass of wine. Another option is Balgownie Estate, arriving early to buy a drink and pay for the wine tasting before the rest of the group arrives.

  9. Yarra Valley Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery

Visited every day for a guided tasting of 10 of the chocolaterie's 500 chocolates. The Yarra Valley Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery is known for handmade chocolate and ice cream. Guests can watch the chocolatiers at work and buy gelato and gifts.

  10. Balgownie Estate

Visited every day. A guided tasting of five wines with wide views. Balgownie Estate is also an award-winning hotel, so guests who skip the tasting are bought a glass of wine, tea or coffee and can sit and enjoy the setting.

  11. 30 Flinders St, Melbourne

The tour ends on the same street where it began, inside the free tram zone. Guests can stay on the bus and be taken to the original pick-up point, but that is a 20-minute drive in traffic instead of a four-minute walk.

Not included

  • Hotel pick-ups and drop-offs
