This one-day wine tour crosses eastern Georgia from door to door, with Friendly.ge Tours & Experiences. The road climbs through the Gombori Pass and passes mountain scenery, villages and old churches before the wine begins. Medieval monuments fill the route: Ujarma Fortress, Alaverdi Monastery and Gremi, the former capital of the Kingdom of Kakheti. Telavi, the main city of Kakheti, is part of the day, as are Bodbe Monastery and Sighnaghi, the City of Love. The wine comes in Kvareli, where Georgian wines are tasted and the way they are made is explained by the winemakers of Kakheti.

  1. Friendly.ge Tours & Experiences

    Door-to-door service.

  2. Ujarma Fortress

The first stop is Ujarma Fortress. It is believed that in the second half of the 5th century Vakhtang Gorgasali, founder of Tbilisi, raised buildings here and moved his residence to Ujarma. After his death his heir Dachi ruled Kakheti from the fortress for a time. Arab forces under Abul Kassim destroyed Ujarma in the 10th century, and King George III restored it in the 13th century and set up a treasury there.

  3. Gombori Pass

The route continues through the Gombori Pass, up to 1,650 meters (5,414 feet). An observation deck at the top is the best place for photos. After a short stop, the road goes on through a forest where visitors can make a wish.

  4. Alaverdi St. George Cathedral

Alaverdi Monastery was founded by the Assyrian monk Joseph Alaverdeli, who came from Antioch and settled in Alaverdi, then a small village and a former pagan center dedicated to the Moon. At over 55 meters, its cathedral is the second tallest religious building in Georgia, after Holy Trinity Cathedral in Tbilisi, consecrated in 2004.

  5. Monument to Heraclius II

Monument to Irakli II, king of the Kartli-Kakhetian state.

  6. Batonis-Tsikhe Fortress

Telavi is the main city and administrative center of Kakheti, in eastern Georgia.

  8. Gremi Citadel and Church of the Archangels

Gremi is the stop on the way to Kvareli, above the green Alazani Valley, between Telavi and Kvareli. The castle is gloomy and monumental and one of the most visited sites in Georgia. The ensemble as it looks today dates to the 16th century and King Levan of Kakheti, who made Gremi the capital of the Kingdom of Kakheti.

  9. Tunnel Winery Khareba's

In Kvareli, Georgian wines are tasted and their making is explained.

  10. Bodbe Monastery of St. Nino

Bodbe is one of Georgia's most important religious sites. A nunnery now stands where the monastery was, and St. George Cathedral, part of the complex, holds the remains of St. Nino, Equal to the Apostles, who brought Christianity to Georgia. A new cathedral is under construction, built with much the same methods as Georgia's famous cathedrals of centuries ago.

  11. Signagi City Walls

Sighnaghi has significant historic and cultural heritage sites. Cobblestone streets and alleys, restored woodwork and detailed facades give the town a romantic air. Billed as the City of Love, it is a popular wedding venue. Its chapel was the first to operate around the clock, which put Sighnaghi on the map, and it still hosts ceremonies at all hours.
