This private tour takes 9 to 10 hours in Kakheti, the main wine-producing region of Georgia, and is built around three tastings at three kinds of winery: organic, family-run and conventional. A lunch is part of it. The wines are red and white Georgian varieties made in qvevri, the clay vessels of Georgian winemaking. The day opens in the village of Badiauri with fresh shoti bread from the bakery and local cheese. Sighnaghi is next, a fortified town of narrow cobblestone streets. The visit ends at the Okros organic winery, with three wines and chacha, the grape vodka, tasted on a terrace over the Alazani Valley and the Great Caucasus. Lunch is at a family-owned winery with natural wines and home-cooked food. The third tasting, of two wines, takes place in the former bomb shelter tunnel of the Khareba winery.

  1. Signagi

Sighnaghi is the second stop. A walk along the narrow cobblestone streets leads to the boutique winery Okros, which is 100% organic. Okros is a leading natural wine producer in Georgia, exports to the USA, UK, Italy, France, Australia and the Scandinavian countries, and is sold in natural wine bars and restaurants worldwide. The owner explains how the wine is made in the ancient Georgian tradition, and three wines are tasted with chacha as a bonus. The terrace looks over the Alazani Valley, with the Great Caucasus behind. After a couple of glasses comes a look at the marani, the wine cellar where the winemaking happens.

  2. Badiauri

A short first stop in the village of Badiauri for fresh shoti bread from the bakery, served with local homemade cheese.

  3. Family winery lunch in Mukuzani

A traditional Georgian lunch with a Kakhetian family in the village of Muluzani. The winemaker hosts in person and leads the way round his cellar, where his own wine is poured. In Georgia that means real drinking rather than sampling. Homemade lunch follows, made from products grown in the village by the host family or their neighbors. By Georgian tradition, wine is always part of the feast.

  4. Tunnel Winery Khareba's

Khareba winery sits in an underground tunnel on the site of a former Soviet bomb shelter. It is one of the biggest wineries in Georgia and makes conventional wines by the traditional method in qvevri (large clay jars buried in the earth) and by the European one. Two traditional qvevri wines are sampled in the 4.1 km tunnel, which is mostly used for storing and aging wine. Guests can join a masterclass on churchkhela, a dessert made from grape juice and walnuts (if available). As an alternative, a visit to Kindzmarauli Corporation can be offered, with a tour of the factory and a tasting of five wines.
