Private Chianti Wine Tours from Florence
Twenty tours, 160 to 795 EUR, median 388. If the price is for the car, two guests pay about 194 EUR each and six pay 65.
Eighteen of the 20 tours on this page are private, and their prices run from 160 to 795 EUR for what looks on paper like one product: a car, a driver and a few estates. No listing holds more than 11% of the page's reviews, which makes this the most evenly spread of the five Chianti pages and the hardest to judge by rating alone. What separates a 160 EUR day from a 795 EUR one is rarely the length. It is what the price leaves you to pay at the estate door, and whether the number is a price for the car or for each person in it. This page works that out for two, four and six guests.
For the place itself, see the Chianti page. If you would rather share the vehicle, the full-day and half-day pages read those tours one by one. A word on the numbers: they are medians of the 20 listings read on 30 September 2026, and our records do not say whether a private price is for the person or for the vehicle. The page therefore shows both readings, and says which one the evidence favours and why.

Per car or per head: the arithmetic
Our catalogue records a price for each listing but not the unit it is quoted in, so this page reads the units from the listings themselves. A private day with a Mercedes and a driver for up to seven travellers, at 795 EUR, only makes sense as a price for the car: charged per head, seven guests would pay 5,565 EUR for one day of driving. A 160 EUR day that caps at three travellers reads the same way. Treat every private price here as a price for the group unless the booking page says otherwise, and check the unit there before you pay.
On that reading the table below is the one to look at. It divides three prices by the size of the party, and puts the shared full-day median beside them.
At two guests the median private tour costs less per head than the median shared full-day tour. The catch is in what the private price leaves out.
| Party size | 160 EUR day (max 3 guests) | 388 EUR (page median) | 795 EUR day (max 7 guests) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 guests | 80 EUR | 194 EUR | 398 EUR |
| 3 guests | 53 EUR | 129 EUR | 265 EUR |
| 4 guests | Over the cap | 97 EUR | 199 EUR |
| 6 guests | Over the cap | 65 EUR | 133 EUR |
For comparison, the median shared full-day tour costs 210 EUR a person and the median shared half day 90 EUR. The break-even is two people at the median private price and four at the top one. Two people paying 194 EUR each get the car, the driver and the itinerary to themselves. A party of six paying 65 EUR each pays less than for a shared half day, and that is the situation this format suits best.
The chart shows how little length explains. Eleven private days last exactly eight hours, and they cost between 325 and 795 EUR, with a median of 395. The four five-hour days cost 160 to 430 EUR. A day that is 2.4 times dearer than another of the same length is buying something else: a better car, a named estate, a guide rather than a driver, or simply the operator's margin.
What the price leaves at the estate door
The 795 EUR listing is the clearest example. The price covers a Mercedes, an English-speaking driver, wifi and bottled water. The lunch and cellar tour at the Castellina estate Poggio Amorelli cost 70 EUR a person on the spot, and the cellar visit at Castello di Gabbiano another 35 EUR. The Antinori stop is a free look at the building if it happens to be open, and any tasting at its wine bar is paid separately.
Two guests would therefore pay 795 EUR for the car and a further 210 EUR for the tastings. The 430 EUR listing in the same band is five hours with lunch and wine tasting at two boutique wineries included. It is the cheaper day by far for what it contains, and it is sold with no refunds.
Five hours or eight
The four five-hour days are closer to a private half day: two estates, a village and a tasting, for 160 to 430 EUR. Two of them cost 160 EUR. One is a private car for up to three travellers that meets at the Piazza dei Cavalleggeri in front of Florence's National Library and tastes cured meats, cheeses, oil and Chianti Classico at two family wineries. The other is a half day with San Gimignano. They are the cheapest ways on this page to have a driver, and the only ones where a couple spends less than a shared full day costs.
At eight hours or more, lunch does not sort the cheap from the dear. Of the 14 such listings, 8 include lunch, and their median price is 443 EUR against 424 for the six that do not. The no-lunch group averages 520 EUR because it holds the 795 and 743 EUR days, which leave the meal and the tastings to you. The longest listing, ten hours at 499 EUR, is an exclusive private Chianti Classico day with lunch.
| Question | Why it matters | What we found |
|---|---|---|
| Is the price per party or per person? | It decides whether the day is 194 or 388 EUR each for two | The booking page states it; the listings read as group prices |
| Are the tastings included? | Tastings at the estates can add 35 to 70 EUR a head | The 795 EUR day excludes them; the 430 EUR day includes them |
| Are the wineries named? | Some operators choose after you book | A 980 EUR private day on the full-day page picks its estates after booking; others here name two or three |
| Where does the day start? | Hotel pickup is in 18 of 20, but not all | The 160 EUR day starts at a square in Florence |
| Can you cancel? | A private day is a fixed cost | The 430 EUR listing states that all sales are final |
From Siena, and from the ship
Two of the 20 are not private at all, and both leave from Siena. A 5.5-hour Chianti Classico and Brunello tour costs 180 EUR; an 8-hour day with Pienza and lunch costs 235 EUR. They are small-group days sold on the private page because the region and the operator match. Neither is a Chianti-only day, so read them as a way to add Montalcino to a Siena stay.
The most reviewed listing on the page is a Livorno shore excursion, 9 hours at 459 EUR, with 87 reviews. It belongs to the same operator, Prestige Rent, as a 389 EUR private day to Siena and Chianti. If you are arriving by ship, the Tuscany page has the Montalcino and San Gimignano options for the same port day.
Driver or guide
The word private covers two jobs. Some listings sell a driver: an English-speaking professional who takes you to the estates and points out the landscape on the way. The 795 EUR day is in this group, and so is the listing that describes its car as a limousine service. Others sell a guide who happens to drive. One 160 EUR listing is led by a guide who was born and raised in the area and tells the history and traditions of the villages between the two family wineries. A third kind is the driver-guide of the 430 EUR listing, who is by your side at the tasting.
The difference is hard to see from a listing. Two questions settle it. Does the person speak at the estate, or only on the road? And does the itinerary have a fixed set of stops, or is it built with you? A driver with a fixed set of stops is a taxi with a good itinerary. A guide with your questions is the thing you are paying the premium for.
Why the ratings need a second look
The 4.94 weighted rating is high, and the reviews behind it are thin. The biggest operator, Prestige Rent, holds 152 of the 817 reviews across two listings, which is 19%. Thirteen of the 20 listings have 33 reviews or fewer. A 5.0 on 28 reviews and a 4.9 on 77 are very different things: the first can be moved by one guest, the second is a pattern. Where a private day matters to you, prefer the listing with more reviews even if it is rated a tenth lower.
It is also a page on which ratings barely separate the listings. Only one tour, at 4.6, rates below 4.9. That leaves the price, the inclusions and the operator's conditions as the real differences.
Questions about private Chianti wine tours
Is a private tour worth it for two people?
It can be. If the listed price is for the car, the median private tour is about 194 EUR a head for two, below the 210 EUR median of a shared full-day tour. Check which tastings are included, because some private days add 35 to 70 EUR a person at the estates.
How many people fit?
It depends on the vehicle. One 160 EUR day caps at three travellers, a Mercedes day at seven, and some listings allow more. The cap is stated in the listing, and it decides whether the per-head price works.
Are lunch and tastings included?
Lunch is included in 9 of the 20 listings. Tastings are included in some and paid at the estate in others. The 430 EUR listing includes both; the 795 EUR one includes neither.
Can I choose the wineries?
Some operators let you choose, some name their wineries in the listing and at least one selects them after you book. If the estate matters to you, ask before you pay.
Does the driver guide me through the cellar?
Usually not. A driver takes you to the estate, and the estate's staff run the tasting. A few listings describe the driver as a guide who explains the area, which is a different job.
Can children come, or someone who uses a wheelchair?
The 430 and 795 EUR listings both say infant seats are available and that the vehicle is wheelchair accessible. Other listings do not say, so ask before you book.
Would you rather share the vehicle?
The full-day shared tours cost 220 EUR at the median and mostly include lunch.
