A cruise call in Livorno leaves one day for Tuscany, and this private tour spends all nine hours of it in Chianti. A driver-guide meets you at the ship and narrates the route through the hills, past vineyards and olive groves, to Greve in Chianti and a winery in the Chianti Classico area. The wine tasting covers Chianti Classico, Riserva and Super Tuscans, with the estate's olive oil alongside. The car is yours alone, so the schedule can bend to what you want to see, and the drive ends at the ship in Livorno.

What's included

  • One winery visit with Wine and Olive Oil tasting
  • Transport by air-conditioned sedan or minivan
  • Worry-Free Shore Excursion Guarantee

  1. Greve in Chianti

Your driver meets you at the ship in Livorno Port and uses the 90-minute drive to Greve in Chianti, the best-known village of the Chianti Classico countryside, to go over the plan and adjust it to your wishes. Greve is the birthplace of Giovanni da Verrazzano, the Tuscan explorer who found New York Harbor. Walk Piazza Matteotti, the gently sloping square at the center of village life, and browse the local shops and wine stores, among them the Falorni butcher shop and Enoteca Le Cantine, one of the largest wine shops in Tuscany.

  2. Strada Statale 222 Chiantigiana

From Greve, a 30-minute drive follows one of Italy's most scenic wine roads, lined with rolling hills, large vineyards and olive trees typical of Chianti Classico.

  3. Panzano in Chianti

On the way to the winery, the road passes the hilltop village of Panzano in Chianti, exactly halfway between Florence and Siena, with the church of Santa Maria Assunta and the tower of its castle.

  4. Fattoria di Montecchio

The visit opens with the history of the estate, then moves through the old wine cellars, where the guide explains how Chianti red and Tuscan olive oil are made. Afterwards you sit down to taste several wines (Chianti Classico, Riserva, Super Tuscans and others) and the olive oil, a staple of Italian cooking.

  5. Casa Emma wine tasting

If Fattoria Montecchio is not available on your date, the visit and tasting take place at Casa Emma, another hilltop winery in the same part of the Chianti Classico countryside.

  6. San Donato in Poggio

Five minutes from the wineries, La Locanda di Pietracupa is a family-owned restaurant serving genuine Tuscan food with a good list of local wines. It is only a suggestion: lunch is at your own expense, and you can eat elsewhere or keep it quick.

  7. Strada Statale 222 Chiantigiana

Depending on your interests, the day continues along typical Tuscan roads and villages before the driver drops you back at the ship in Livorno Port in good time.
