  1. Greve in Chianti

The driver collects you at your accommodation in Florence and talks through the plan during the 45-minute drive to Greve in Chianti, the best-known village of the Chianti Classico countryside. Greve is the birthplace of Giovanni da Verrazzano, the Tuscan who reached New York Harbor. Piazza Matteotti, a gently sloping square, is the center of the village. Shops and wine stores line it, among them the Falorni butcher shop and Enoteca Le Cantine, one of the biggest wine shops in Tuscany.

  2. Strada Statale 222 Chiantigiana

Leaving Greve, a 30-minute drive runs along one of Italy's most scenic wine roads, through hills, large vineyards and olive trees typical of Chianti Classico.

  3. Panzano in Chianti

Before the winery, the road passes Panzano in Chianti, a hilltop village exactly halfway between Florence and Siena, with the church of Santa Maria Assunta and the tower of its castle.

  4. Fattoria di Montecchio

The winery visit begins with the story of the estate, then goes through the old cellars, where the guide explains how Chianti red and Tuscan olive oil are produced. Seated tasting follows: Chianti Classico, Riserva, Super Tuscans and others, plus the olive oil. If Fattoria Montecchio is unavailable, another wine estate in the same area takes its place.

  5. San Donato in Poggio

La Locanda di Pietracupa, a family-owned restaurant five minutes from the wineries, serves genuine Tuscan food with local wines. It is optional. Lunch is at your own expense, and you can choose another place or eat something quick in Siena.

  6. Siena

In Siena the driver drops you in Piazza del Duomo, in front of the Cathedral and its bell tower. The Santa Maria della Scala museum and the Palazzo Arcivescovile stand on the same square. From there it is an easy five-minute walk to Piazza del Campo, the brick-paved square where the Palio horse race is run twice a year. Around it are the Town Hall with the Mangia Tower, the Cappella di Piazza, the Gaia Fountain and the surrounding palaces.

  7. Florence

The day ends with a one-hour drive back to your accommodation in Florence.
