Chianti Winery Visits and Tastings

Twenty cellar visits, 15 to 393 EUR, median 39 for about an hour and a half. None of the listings we opened includes the ride.

Fifteen of the 20 winery visits on this page cost 50 EUR or less, the cheapest is 15 EUR for fifty minutes, and all four listings we opened ask you to arrive at the estate on your own. That is the whole proposition: a cellar, a guide and four to eight wines at a price that is usually closer to the estate's own door than to a tour operator's. What the price leaves out is the road. This page is about the tastings that cost a median 39 EUR for about an hour and a half, what they include, how people actually get to them, and where the price jumps to 70 EUR and beyond because a meal or an unrelated activity has crept in.

The Chianti page reads two cellar-door prices from the estates' own sites, 27 and 50 EUR. The median here falls between them. For a day with transport included, see the half-day or full-day tours.

Fifteen under 50 euros: what the money covers

The cheap end of this page is a real market. A handful of family estates account for most of it, and they sell short slots of time: fifty minutes, an hour and a half, sometimes two. Inside that slot the pattern is consistent. A guide walks you through the vineyard or the cellar, then you sit down to a flight of wines with something to eat. The flights run from four wines to eight, and the food is oil, cheese and cured meat.

The chart below shows how tightly they cluster. The exceptions are at the top of the range, where the prices are for meals.

Chart of the 20 Chianti Winery Visits & Tastings listings by price and length, median 39 EUR
Each mark is one listing, placed by length and price. Diamonds are private tours. The dashed line is the median, 39 EUR. Prices as listed. · Wine Tours Editorial, from the prices of the tours listed on this site

The chart has a tight cluster and two kinds of outliers. Inside the cluster, from 15 to 55 EUR and 50 minutes to two hours, sit 15 of the listings. Above it, at three hours and 75 to 95 EUR, sit two Siena listings that add a meal. Far above, at four and five hours, are two private days at 319 and 393 EUR, and those are grape-stomping experiences at a farmhouse, not winery visits. The page lists them because they are in Chianti and they involve wine.

Rows of oak barrels lying in a dark winery cellar

A cellar tour at 30 euros

The cellar is the one thing a tasting room cannot fake. A 30 EUR listing from the estate that also sells the 15 EUR tasting is a one-hour tour of the cellar and a tasting of six wines. At Casa Sola the guide follows the wine from pruning through harvest, fermentation and ageing, and explains what makes one vintage different from the next. It is a lesson you get at a producer, not from a bottle.

It is also the reason for the structure of these listings. A tour operator sells a day; an estate sells an hour of its own time. You are paying for the person who made the wine to talk about it, and the price reflects how many guests share that hour.

Getting there when nothing includes the ride

All four winery visits we opened for this page list the estate itself as the meeting point, and none lists transport as included. The listings say how you are expected to arrive, and they are frank about it.

Four listings and how they expect you to arrive
Estate What the listing says about arriving
Casa Sola Chianti WineryDirections by car from the Florence-Siena expressway: exit at San Donato, follow San Donato/Castellina for 4.5 km, turn at the Cortine sign and continue 2.8 km. Parking fees are included in the price.
San Giorgio a Lapi, SienaThe winery recommends a taxi for guests coming from Siena without a car. Arrive 10 minutes before the 6:30 pm start.
Azienda Agricola Brogioni, GreveGives the distance from Florence as about 30 km and a 75-minute drive from Florence airport.
Cantalici, CastagnoliMeet at the reception of the winery.

The practical reading is that these are car visits, and the car introduces a question the tour formats solve for you. A flight of four to eight wines in small pours is not a night out, but the person who drives home should know the Italian rule: 0.5 g/l, and zero for drivers under 21 or licensed for less than three years. The Vespa, Fiat 500 and e-bike page sets out the figures. For everyone else, a taxi back to Siena or Greve is cheaper than the penalty.

When the tasting becomes a meal

Four of the 20 include a meal, and they are where the price leaves the cluster. Poggio ai Laghi sells a 70 EUR lunch, 1.8 hours, with a wine tasting paired to its signature cuisine. A Siena winery sells a three-hour lunch with tasting at 75 EUR, and the same winery's sunset dinner, with four wines and four courses on a terrace, costs 95 EUR. The fourth is a private grape-stomping day with lunch at a farmhouse.

These are the cheap meals of the page. A shared half-day tour with lunch costs 91 EUR at the very least, and the Siena lunch is cheaper than that. If you want a meal with a producer and you have a car, this is the best-value way to have one.

A meal at the estate costs about twice a tasting and less than the cheapest half day with lunch. The difference is that you bring yourself.

Slate board with cured meats, cheese slices, olives and almonds

What arrives with the wine

The tasting is rarely only wine. The listings mention cheese, cured meats, extra virgin olive oil and aged balsamic vinegar, and some add flavoured oils or a pairing of two cheeses with four wines. A 37 EUR listing from one estate is four wines with two Tuscan cheeses; a 36 EUR one is four wines with two olive oils. At that scale the food decides the value.

Ask what is on the board before you choose. A tasting of wines with a bread-and-oil accompaniment and a tasting with a proper plate of cheese and salami can cost the same, and only one will replace lunch.

How small these estates are

The estates on this page are small, and some of the listings say how small. The Brogioni winery in Greve describes itself as one hectare of olive grove and three of vines, planted with Sangiovese, Syrah and Merlot. Two other listings call their wines organic. On the Consorzio's own figures, roughly 7,000 hectares of DOCG vineyard are shared among some 480 producers, which averages about 15 hectares each, so a three-hectare estate is a fifth of the average and is poured by the people who farm it.

That size is what the 39 EUR buys: a tasting poured by the people who farm the vines, with no tour operator between you and the cellar. It also means a small cellar takes a small booking, which is why the listings cap a party at 10 to 15.

The two that are not tastings

The grape-stomping listings are the least usual products on any of the five Chianti pages, and they are included because the category is broad. One is a four-hour private day at a Chianti farmhouse for 319 EUR; the other is a five-hour private day from Florence for 393 EUR. Each has 11 reviews and rates 4.9 or better. Both include lunch and both are private. If that is what you want, book them; if you came for a tasting, skip them.

One estate, a fifth of the reviews

Casa Sola holds 183 of the page's 1,083 reviews, which is 17%, at a rating of 5.0. That is a low share: the leading operators on the other four Chianti pages hold 19%, 29%, 53% and 64%. Fourteen operators share the page, and none of the others is above 13%. The only sizeable listing rated below 4.6 is the Montefioralle Winery tour, at 4.2 on 103 reviews, which at 35 EUR for 1.2 hours is no dearer than its neighbours. The other low rating is the Poggio ai Laghi lunch at 4.3, on only 16 reviews.

Two conclusions. First, the tastings are very consistently well reviewed, weighted at 4.81. Second, the rating carries information mostly in the exceptions: look at a listing that falls below 4.6 and ask why.

Questions about Chianti winery visits and tastings

How much does a winery tasting in Chianti cost?

The median listing is 39 EUR for about 1.5 hours. Fifteen of the 20 cost 50 EUR or less. The cheapest is 15 EUR for fifty minutes, and meals at an estate run from 70 to 95 EUR.

How many wines do I taste?

Usually four to eight. One estate offers 4, 6 or 8 wines depending on the option you book, another tastes four wines with cheese, and a 30 EUR cellar tour pours six.

Can I visit without a car?

It is hard. The listings we opened meet at the estate and include no transport. One winery near Siena tells guests without a car to take a taxi, and another gives driving directions from the expressway.

Is there a minimum age?

Alcohol is served only to guests aged 18 and over in the listings that state a rule. Children are welcome at some estates, so ask.

Should I book ahead?

Yes. These are sold as fixed slots with a start time, such as 6:30 pm, and the listings cap a booking at 10 to 15 guests. The Chianti page notes that at least one estate requires a booking and does not refund it.

Is it cheaper than a tour?

Per person, yes: 39 EUR against 124 EUR for a half day. The half day includes the transport and a second stop, so the comparison is fair only for those who have a car.

Want the ride included?

The half-day tours from Florence take you to two estates for a median of 124 EUR.
