Hunter Valley Wine Tours from Sydney: 20 Day Trips
Twenty day trips from 118 to 1,027 EUR, and the two cheapest are the two lowest rated.
The two cheapest Hunter Valley day trips from Sydney are also the two lowest rated: 118 EUR at 4.1 stars and 119 EUR at 4.3. The other ten group tours run from 136 to 228 EUR and none rates below 4.6. That is the pattern on a page where all twenty listings are the same shape, a nine to twelve hour day with a driver, and where the price depends on two things, whether the tour is private and how well the operator runs eleven hours. Below, a table of nine group tours sets price against rating, the arithmetic of the road is worked out, the private prices are converted to a price per head, and the two operators with 53% of the reviews are named. This page covers Hunter Valley wine tours from Sydney: what the road does to the day, the group and private prices, who holds the reviews, and how to read a listing before you pay.
It is a little over two hours each way, which means about four of those hours are on the road. The cellar door visits, for people already in the valley, are on a separate page.

Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
The cheapest two rate lowest
Take the group tours in price order and the ratings rise with the price, up to a point. The two at the bottom, 118 and 119 EUR, have 33 and 35 reviews and rate 4.1 and 4.3. One of them, at 119 EUR, does not include lunch. The other, at 118 EUR, runs one of the two longest group days on the page, eleven and a half hours. Above them the ratings settle between 4.6 and 5.0.
The samples are small, 68 reviews between the two, and a bad week can do a lot. It is still a caution against choosing the cheapest day on the page, since the money saved is less than the gap to the next listing, 136 EUR, which has 329 reviews.
| Price | Hours | Lunch | Reviews | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 118 EUR | 11.5 | Yes | 33 | 4.1 |

Four hours on the road
Visit NSW puts the valley 'a little over two hours' from Sydney. Eighteen of the twenty listings run ten hours or more, and the commonest lengths are ten hours (nine listings) and eleven (five). Subtract the drive both ways and the time in the valley is five to seven hours for most listings, as the table shows. On the chef-led day, the extra time goes on a market stop and a cooked breakfast rather than on more tastings.
The chef-led day shows how that time is spent. It leaves Sydney, stops at the Sydney Fish Market, breaks the drive with a cooked breakfast on the Hawkesbury River, visits three boutique wineries and serves a long lunch from a mobile kitchen, then returns over the Harbour Bridge. It takes up to 16 people, costs 174 EUR for eleven hours and has 791 reviews at 5.0, more than any other listing here.
| Listing length | Listings | Road, both ways | Left for wineries and lunch |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9 hours | 2 | About 4 hours | About 5 hours |
| 10 to 10.5 hours | 10 | About 4 hours | 6 to 6.5 hours |
| 11 to 11.5 hours | 7 | About 4 hours | 7 to 7.5 hours |
| 12 hours | 1 | About 4 hours | About 8 hours |
The day starts and ends here
Every listing on this page begins in Sydney, most with hotel pickup. Sixteen of the twenty offer it, 80%, and the private tour we read limits it to Sydney CBD hotels. The chef-led day picks up from seven places around the city centre, Haymarket and Glebe.
If you are staying outside the centre, read the meeting points before you book, because a pickup that is far from your bed adds to a day that is already eleven hours.
What private costs
The eight private tours cost 310 to 1,027 EUR with a median of 553 EUR. The price is for the party. The 1,027 EUR one is for one to seven guests, with wine tastings at up to four boutique wineries, an optional cheese stop and pickup from Sydney CBD hotels. Lunch and the optional cheese, beer and distillery tastings are not included. At a full seven, that is 147 EUR per person, below the 156 EUR group median.
Three other private days cluster tightly: 467, 476 and 477 EUR from three different operators, for ten to twelve hours. The cheapest private, 310 EUR, is also the lowest rated of them at 4.7. A private limousine day is 684 EUR and a luxury tour with lunch 689 EUR.
A private tour is cheaper per head than a group ticket only if the car is full.
The chart shows two clouds. The group tours form a band across 9 to 11.5 hours, and the private tours sit far above it. There is nothing in between, which suggests the market is either a seat on a bus or a whole car.
Two operators, 53% of the reviews
Eighteen operators sell twenty listings, and two of them hold 53% of the reviews. Gourmet Getaway Tours has one listing and 27%, the chef-led day above. Colourful Collective Travel has two and 26%: a premium tour with a two-course lunch at 178 EUR and a wine tasting tour at 136 EUR, both rated 4.6 on 430 and 329 reviews.
Take the chef-led day out and the page rates 4.70. With it, 4.78. That is worth keeping in mind when a title says Award-Winning: on this page a small set of operators, not the category, carries the score.
The stops are short
A day trip stops at three or four wineries and a lunch place. The private listing we read says it gives four tastings at four wineries, and the chef-led day three. With five to seven hours in the valley to share between three or four tastings and a lunch, each stop is short.
The private listing also says that if you choose your own wineries instead of the operator's usual ones, tasting fees may be charged.
What to check in the listing
Four lines in a listing explain most of the price. Pickup: hotel or fixed point. Lunch: included in 12 of the 20 and often a course or two, or not at all on the private 1,027 EUR day. Group size: 16 on the chef-led day, 7 on the private one. Length: anything above eleven hours is a long day in a minibus. If the listing does not say how many wineries, assume three.
Tasting is for adults, so if you are travelling with children, read the operator's own rules before you book.
Driving yourself instead
The drive is a little over two hours from Sydney and the limit is 0.05% blood alcohol in every state. A self-drive day is possible with a designated driver who does not taste, which is the reason most of these listings exist. A group ticket at 156 EUR is the price of not being that driver.
