Hunter Valley Cellar Door Tours: What 20 Listings Cost

From a 9 EUR seated tasting to a 310 EUR private day: 14 of the 20 last three hours or less.

The cheapest Hunter Valley cellar door tour on this site costs 9 EUR and lasts 45 minutes, and the dearest costs 310 EUR and lasts six hours. The median, 69.50 EUR, belongs to nothing in between. That is the first thing to know about Hunter Valley cellar door tours: the name covers seven different products, from a seated tasting at one estate to a private day for a party, and this page sorts them. It uses the twenty listings as read on 30 September 2026, and it leaves out the valley's history and the road from Sydney, which are on the pages for the Hunter Valley and its day trips from Sydney.

Most of them are sold by the estates themselves: ten of the twenty listings belong to five estates, three more to one tour company, and the other seven to seven operators with a listing each. If you need a ride from Sydney, the day trips are the page to use instead. Below are the seven products in a table, the eight tastings under 40 EUR, the pairings, the price per hour for nine listings, and six questions.

What a cellar door is

In Australia the cellar door is the sales and tasting room of a winery. A cellar door can be a counter in the corner of a barrel room, a verandah in front of the vines or a purpose-built tasting hall. You walk in, stand at the bar or sit at a table, and a member of staff pours small measures of the estate's wines.

The word does most of the work in the Hunter because so many estates sell their own sessions. Audrey Wilkinson Vineyard, Ivanhoe Wines, McCaffrey's Estate, Tulloch Wines and Tintilla Estate all have listings here. Each session is a booking at one estate, and what you pay is for the time, the host and usually the wines poured.

The eight tastings under 40 EUR

Eight listings cost between 9 and 38 EUR and last 45 to 60 minutes. They include a seated tasting at Ivanhoe Wines for 9 EUR and a premium one for 28 EUR, a boutique tasting at McCaffrey's for 10 EUR, a wine and cheese tasting there for 13 EUR, a chocolate pairing at Tulloch for 22 EUR, a cheese and wine tasting in Pokolbin for 24 EUR, a meat and cheese platter at Tintilla for 31 EUR and a sweet-wine session at Audrey Wilkinson for 38 EUR.

These are cheap because they are a counter seat and a host for under an hour. They are also the reason the median is so low. Someone who reads 'from 9 EUR' and expects a tour has misread a booking for a counter seat. Two of them, the 31 and 38 EUR ones, are the lowest rated on the page at 4.5, on 55 reviews between them. Eight listings is a small sample, but the two dearest singles are the two that rate lowest.

Chart of the 20 Hunter Valley Cellar Door Tours listings by price and length, median 70 EUR
Hunter Valley cellar door listings by price and length: a dense group of one-hour tastings at the left edge, a thin spread of longer days to the right. · Wine Tours Editorial, from the prices of the tours listed on this site

The chart shows the structure more clearly than the median can. A dense cluster sits at the left, under an hour and under 40 EUR. Then there is a gap, and then a thin line of days stretching to ten hours. The valley has no middle: a listing is either a counter seat or most of a day.

Pairings and classes

Three listings sit between the tastings and the tours. Audrey Wilkinson's picnic with a wine masterclass tasting is 60 EUR for two hours and has 372 reviews at 4.8, making it the third most reviewed listing on the page. Its cheese and fortified wine experience is 50 EUR for an hour. McCaffrey's winemaking class is 79 EUR for an hour and a half and rates 5.0 on 104 reviews.

These are the listings to choose if you want to learn something, not just taste. The class is about how the wine is made, the picnic trades the counter for a blanket, and the fortified wine session is the one to pick if sweet wine is what you came for.

Four operators hold 85% of the reviews

Thirteen operators share the twenty listings, and four of them hold 85% of the reviews. Two Fat Blokes Gourmet Tours has three listings and 47%: its 81 EUR half-day snapshot with 595 reviews, its 7-hour full-day tour with lunch at 150 EUR with 582, and a 24 EUR cheese and wine tasting. Audrey Wilkinson has three and 18%, Ivanhoe two and 13%, McCaffrey's three and 7%.

Two Fat Blokes is the only operator on the page with a full day and a counter seat under the same name.

Ask about the fee before you go

A tasting fee is what a cellar door charges to pour a flight of wines. It may be waived or credited against a purchase, but it varies by estate, and none of the listings here promises either. Check the inclusions on each one. The 9 to 38 EUR sessions are close to a tasting fee, bought in advance with a host and a seat.

On a full-day tour, the listing says whether tastings are included; read the inclusions rather than assuming.

The full days, and how they compare with Sydney

Three group days are listed here: Two Fat Blokes' Uncork the Hunter at 150 EUR for seven hours with lunch, a boutique tour from Newcastle at 144 EUR for eight hours, and a scenic wine and cheese tour at 156 EUR for ten and a half hours with lunch. The three private days cost 209, 302 and 310 EUR. They sit next to the day trips from Sydney, which run 118 to 228 EUR for a group seat, and are not cheaper once the ride is counted.

The decision is where you are sleeping. In the valley, a session here is cheap. In Sydney, the Hunter is a day trip, and the Hunter Valley Day Trips from Sydney page is the one to use.

The price per hour

Because the lengths range from 45 minutes to ten hours, a price per hour is the fairest comparison. It gives a result that is the opposite of what the headline prices suggest: the longest days are the cheapest by the hour, and the short, small-group formats are the dearest.

Price per hour of selected listings, worked out from the listed price and length. Private and helicopter prices are for the party.

Boutique tour from Newcastle144 EUR8 hours18 EUR
Horse ride in Pokolbin100 EUR3 hours33 EUR
Helicopter tasting tour240 EUR3 hours80 EUR

A full day with lunch works out at 18 to 21 EUR an hour and a seated tasting at 11 to 28. The class at 53 EUR an hour and the helicopter at 80 are paying for something other than the wine, which is fine if you know it.

Staying under 0.05

The limit in every state is 0.05% blood alcohol. A cellar door hop by car is the classic way to exceed it, because each estate pours five or six wines. Either book a session at a single estate within walking distance of where you sleep, or use a tour with a driver.

Questions about Hunter Valley cellar door tours

What is a cellar door?

The winery's own sales and tasting room. You taste at the counter or a table, and buy bottles if you like.

How much does a tasting cost?

On this site the single tastings run 9 to 38 EUR for 45 to 60 minutes. Pairings and classes cost 50 to 79 EUR for one to two hours.

Is transport included?

Not on the single sessions, which expect you to arrive at the estate. For the full-day and private listings, check the inclusions.

Is a cellar door tour the same as a day trip?

No. A day trip from Sydney is nine to twelve hours with a driver and lunch. A cellar door tour here is usually under three hours at one estate.

Can I bring children?

Tasting is for people aged 18 or over, the legal drinking age in Australia. Check the estate's own policy on children before you book.

Which operator has the most reviews?

Two Fat Blokes Gourmet Tours, with 47% across three listings. Audrey Wilkinson Vineyard has 18%.

For the two-format overview, start at Hunter Valley wine tours; for the rule on driving, prices by region and the vocabulary, see Australian wine tours.
