Stellenbosch Wine Tours: 20 Ways to Spend a Day
From a 22 EUR tractor ticket to a 1,431 EUR helicopter flight, and half of the tours private. Twenty Stellenbosch tours, and which ones are really wine.
The cheapest Stellenbosch wine tour on this page costs 22 EUR and the dearest 1,431 EUR. Neither is what it looks like. The 22 EUR listing is a tractor ticket that pays for the ride and none of the wine, and the 1,431 EUR one is a helicopter flight that happens to end with a Stellenbosch tasting. Take those out, and the other 18 Stellenbosch wine tours cluster between 62 and 534 EUR, eight of them private, and all of them carry fewer reviews than any other Cape Winelands page: 723 in total, against 10,180 for the Cape Town group days. This is the least crowded and the most varied of the four formats.
For the choice between towns, the Cape Winelands page is the place. This one is for people who have decided on Stellenbosch and want to know how to buy it.

Three listings that are not wine tours
A third of the page's price range is one-off products. Look at them before reading any average.
| Listing | Price | Length | Reviews | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stellenbosch Wine Tractor hop-on-hop off | 22 EUR | 3 h | 107 | A ticket for a tractor ride between estates; tastings extra |
| Hot-air balloon and private wine tour with breakfast | 534 EUR | 10 h | 11 | A balloon flight plus a private day |
| Cape Town helicopter: Cape of Good Hope and Stellenbosch | 1,431 EUR | 10 h | 5 | A helicopter flight with a Stellenbosch stop |
The balloon flight has its own site in this network: hotairballoon.travel covers the ones that fly over vineyards. The helicopter has 5 reviews and is the most expensive listing in the entire South Africa catalogue, nearly three times the next one. Nobody should compare a 1,431 EUR helicopter day with a 105 EUR small-group day, and the average that contains both is not worth quoting.
The tractor, properly explained
How the wine tractor works
The Stellenbosch Wine Tractor leaves from the Root44 market at the corner of the R44 and Annandale Road, on the southern side of Stellenbosch, not from the old town. The 22 EUR ticket buys a hop-on tractor between estates and a welcome taster. It does not buy the tastings. According to the listing they typically cost 100 to 150 rand each, and each stop gives you 65 minutes.
Two practical traps. Guests need to arrive 30 minutes before departure, and a shuttle from Cape Town is available for 400 rand a head, only for the 10:30 departure, booked 48 hours in advance. One of the estates on the route is marked as closed for renovations. Read the listing the week you go.
So what does it cost? Three tastings at 100 to 150 rand, plus the ticket, is the real price of the afternoon, and if you come from the city you add the shuttle. It is still among the cheapest ways to taste in Stellenbosch, and it has 107 reviews at 4.8, but the price on the card is the price of a seat, not of a day.
Five sub-routes, and the roads you will actually drive
Stellenbosch Wine Routes, the estates' own association, divides the district into five sub-routes: Bottelary Hills, Greater Simonsberg, Helderberg, Stellenbosch Berg and Stellenbosch Valley. They are useful on a map. On a tour they become roads, because the itineraries in these listings are built around the four or five main ones.
| Road or area | Estates named |
|---|---|
| Bottelary Road | Hartenberg |
| Helshoogte Pass, towards Franschhoek | Thelema, Tokara |
| R44 towards Paarl | Kanonkop, L'Avenir, Simonsig (via Kromme Rhee Road) |
| Jonkershoek and the town | Stark-Condé, Lanzerac |
| Annandale Road and the R44 south, Helderberg side | Alto, Annandale, Peter Falke, Webersburg, Eikendal, Longridge |
That table is a sample, not a league table. It explains why two tours with the same title can have little in common: one drives out along the R44 to the old red-wine estates, the other stays on the southern side among newer cellars. Ask which road the day follows.
Private in Stellenbosch: the price ladder
Ten of the twenty are private, and the chart shows a ladder with a few rungs missing. The ordinary private day, 6 to 8 hours, costs 88 to 146 EUR: several sit at 88, 89 and 105 EUR, and the most expensive of the group includes lunch and is described as all-inclusive. Above that come a 124 EUR half day, a 369 EUR afternoon of 4.5 hours, a 408 EUR nine-hour day and then the balloon and the helicopter.
The 408 EUR tour is the only South African listing in the whole catalogue from Civitatis, the other provider, rather than Viator. It has 31 reviews and a 4.8. Whether it is worth four times a standard private day is a question its reviews do not answer, so the honest position is that a Viator private day at 88 to 146 EUR is the default and the rest are premiums.
A private day in Stellenbosch has a market price of about 88 to 146 EUR. The rungs above it are premiums you have to justify yourself.
Walking instead of driving
Two listings skip the car altogether. A 3-hour wine walk with eight tastings, snacks and stories costs 62 EUR and stays in the town; a 4-hour vineyard walk with a wine tasting costs 98 EUR. Neither needs a driver. The catch is scope: you see one neighbourhood of Stellenbosch and not the estates of the surrounding hills.
What the food add-ons cost
One operator sells two full-day tours from Stellenbosch, eight hours each. The wine-only day costs 159 EUR. The one that adds chocolate, cheese and olives costs 192 EUR. The 33 EUR difference is the price of the food. That is useful to know because the Winelands' cheese and chocolate pairings are in the itineraries of many tours, and this is the only pair on the page where both versions exist side by side.
A note on the estates' membership figures
The route's own website gives two different numbers for its membership. The home page says more than 200 wine and grape producers, the 50-years page says more than 120 members. We quote neither. That is no criticism of a route that has been running since 1971, with Simonsig, Spier and Delheim among its founders, but it is a reason to handle the number with care.
What you can count is what is in front of you: the itineraries of the listings name every estate they visit. Treat any claim about the number of Stellenbosch cellar doors as marketing unless it states a date and a source.
Questions about Stellenbosch wine tours
What is the best-rated Stellenbosch wine tour?
The most-reviewed listing is a 7-hour small-group day with lunch at 105 EUR, with 255 reviews at 5.0. Several private tours also score 5.0 on far fewer reviews. With 723 reviews in total for the page, a single listing carries about a third of the weight.
How much do tastings cost at Stellenbosch estates?
Published door prices range from about 100 to 150 rand at the estates on the tractor route and 105 to 165 rand at Delheim. Whether they are included in your tour depends on the listing, and the tractor and several private tours leave them out.
Can I visit Stellenbosch without a car?
Yes. The tractor hop-on, the two walking tours and every guided day are car-free. Cape Town is about 40 minutes away and the larger operators collect from hotels. For a hop-on day, the shuttle from the city adds 400 rand.
Is the wine tractor worth it?
For 22 EUR plus tastings, yes, if you want to choose your own estates and stay longer at each. You get 65 minutes at every stop. It is not a guided tour, and it covers only the estates on its route.
How long should I spend in Stellenbosch?
A half day covers two or three estates. Seven to eight hours covers four or five and a lunch. Twelve of the twenty listings here run 7 hours or longer.
Stellenbosch or Franschhoek?
Stellenbosch has more estates in more directions, and more formats. Franschhoek is one valley with a tram. The Cape Winelands page has the comparison side by side.
Want a driver of your own?
The private Cape Winelands page explains what is in the price of a day with a car and a guide.
