Valpolicella and Amarone wine tours from Verona

Twenty tours, 29 to 1,025 EUR, median 92. Nine are a winery tasting of under 2.5 hours at 29 to 70 EUR, and none offers hotel pickup.

Nine of the 20 Valpolicella tours are a winery tasting of under two and a half hours, and the cheapest of them, 29 EUR, is held at a cellar on the edge of Verona that the listing tells you to reach by city bus 21 or 93. That is the first thing to know about a Valpolicella and Amarone wine tour: one name covers a 29 EUR tasting and a 251 EUR day out from Venice with lunch. The median, 92 EUR for 3.2 hours, describes neither. This page sorts the 20 listings by what they are, shows what getting to the hills costs without a car, and explains what is in the glass. The comparison with Prosecco is on the Veneto page.

All figures are from the 20 listings as read on 30 September 2026, per person as the provider lists them. I opened seven of the listings in full, to check where they meet, what the price includes and whether transport is part of it. Where a title says 'from Verona', that means a meeting point in the city, not a pickup at your hotel. The wine facts come from the Consorzio and the listings themselves.

The same name on a 29 EUR tasting and a 251 EUR day

The chart spreads all 20 listings by length and price. Two clusters stand out. On the left are nine tastings of 0.7 to 2.5 hours at 29 to 70 EUR, which together hold 52% of the category's reviews. On the right is a thin scatter of half days and full days at 90 to 251 EUR, and one point floating at 1,025 EUR. The middle, where most tour categories keep their bulk, is nearly empty: only four listings run between three and four hours.

Chart of the 20 Valpolicella & Amarone Wine Tours listings by price and length, median 92 EUR
Each mark is one of the 20 listings by length and price. Three are private (blue diamonds). The dashed line is the median, 92 EUR. · Wine Tours Editorial, from the prices of the tours listed on this site

The median therefore describes neither group. The nearest real products to 92 EUR are the 90 EUR Pagus half day and the 94 EUR half day from Verona, both three and a half to four and a half hours. Read the chart as a menu, not an average.

A median of 92 EUR sits in the gap between two groups. The real choice is about 40, about 100 or about 200.
Rows of oak barrels stacked in a winery cellar

What the tasting usually includes

Read the inclusions, because the tastings at 29, 37 and 70 EUR are three different things. At 29 EUR the Montresor visit pours five glasses of Valpolicella red, or four Lake Garda whites, with bread, oil, salami and cheese, and adds a small wine museum. At 37 EUR a guided visit to the Bertani villa walks through frescoed rooms, grape-drying racks and cellars with barrels more than 200 years old before a seated tasting. At 70 EUR the Valverde family winery adds a vineyard walk, a look at the drying room and a 17th-century cellar, then pours Valpolicella, Ripasso and Amarone with local cheese and salami.

None of the three includes the ride. The Bertani listing says transport to the villa is not included, and the 70 EUR winery tells you to message after booking to arrange a bus or a shared van at extra cost.

Amarone is a quarter of what the zone bottles

A tasting of Amarone is a tasting of the smallest part of the zone's output. The Consorzio's 2026 report gives Valpolicella about 8,600 hectares and 57.5 million bottles in 2025, of which Amarone and Recioto together are 13.6 million. The rest is Valpolicella and Ripasso, which is what fills most of the glasses in a four-wine tasting. The grape base is Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella, and for Amarone the bunches dry for 100 to 120 days before pressing. That drying is the step several listings let you see, and the reason Amarone is the dearest bottle on any winery list.

Ask which Amarone is being poured, because the listings rarely say. A label from the entry range and a Riserva are different wines at different prices, and a tasting that names neither is telling you about the winery, not the bottle. The denomination itself is young: Amarone became a DOCG on 4 December 2009.

The cheap tastings hand the journey to you, and the dearer ones bundle it. A return taxi changes the sum on a 37 EUR tasting at one winery, and for anyone without a car the half-day minivan, which pours four wines in each of two wineries for 125 EUR, becomes the better buy. If you do have a car, the alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, zero for drivers under 21 and for the first three years after passing the test, so a designated driver is worth more than a good map.

The Church of San Giorgio on the Adige river in Verona

Verona is the real starting line

The hills are a short drive; the start is always in the city. The listings I read meet at Piazza Bra beside the clock on the city walls, in front of the Teatro Ristori, or at Castelvecchio for the bus. Two more of the tastings are titled as in Verona itself: one near Juliet's House and the Arena (44 EUR, one hour) and one of 40 minutes at 43 EUR. I did not open those two, so check whether they are in a cellar or at a table.

That is also the case for the three listings that start in Venice, at 215, 251 and 1,025 EUR. They pay for a train-length journey and three hours of free time in Verona, which is fine if Verona is half the point. If it is not, take the train yourself, which runs 1 h 12 to 1 h 28, and book a tasting from 29 EUR.

Half day, e-bike or long lunch

Three formats sit above the tastings. The half day from Verona costs 90 to 125 EUR and runs 3.5 to 4.5 hours; add Soave and it is 146 EUR. The most reviewed of those, 347 reviews at 125 EUR, carries up to eight people in a minivan to two family wineries, one in Marano and one in Negrar, and pours four wines in each. The e-bike tour is 110 EUR for three hours with a winemaker as guide. You have to be able to ride, the minimum height is 150 cm and the group is capped at six, and the listing folds a light lunch into the tasting.

The lunch day is 190 to 251 EUR. The 208 EUR version I read takes five hours, meets at Piazza Bra, visits two wineries and serves a light lunch at the second, with a walk among the vines in the afternoon. Five of the 20 listings include a meal, from a 120 EUR lunch-or-dinner tasting at one cellar to the 251 EUR private day out from Venice and Treviso. Be wary of the word 'lunch': the 208 EUR listing says plainly that wineries are not restaurants.

When the price stops making sense

The 1,025 EUR listing is the outlier on this page and on the Veneto one. It is a private day from Venice with one winery at Sant'Ambrogio, a short stop at Soave and three free hours in Verona, for up to eight people. The price is not stated as per person or per vehicle. If it is per person, it is eleven times the median for a day that includes one tasting. If it is per vehicle, it is 128 EUR each for eight, which is the same money as the half day. Ask which before you look at the stars: its 4.2 rating, the lowest of the 20, comes from 44 reviews.

Anything above 250 EUR on this page is a private or a Venice departure. Neither is wrong, but neither has anything to do with the wine.

At the other end, a 29 or 35 EUR tasting is honest if you want an hour and a glass. The two lowest ratings on the page, 4.3 at 37 EUR and 4.2 at 1,025 EUR, have between them 148 reviews, too few to conclude anything, while nine listings rate 4.9 or higher.

Questions about Valpolicella and Amarone wine tours

What is the difference between Valpolicella, Ripasso and Amarone?

Valpolicella is the everyday red, Ripasso is Valpolicella refermented over the skins left from Amarone, and Amarone is made from grapes dried for 100 to 120 days. Amarone and sweet Recioto were 13.6 of the zone's 57.5 million bottles in 2025, so most of what you taste is not Amarone.

Do I need a car?

The bus line 103 reaches Sant'Ambrogio and San Pietro in Cariano, and city buses reach the Montresor cellar. The hill wineries are off the line. No listing offers hotel pickup, so pick a tour whose price includes the minivan, or budget a taxi.

Can I see the grape drying rooms?

Two of the listings I read show them: the 70 EUR family winery and the 37 EUR Bertani villa. Ask whether the lofts are in use on your date, because the grapes dry for 100 to 120 days after picking and the room is emptier in summer.

Is the 29 EUR tasting really in Valpolicella?

It is at the Montresor cellar on Via Ca' di Cozzi in Verona, and you can choose five Valpolicella reds or four Lake Garda whites. It is a good, cheap tasting of Veronese wine. It is not a walk through Valpolicella's hills.

Is a day trip from Venice worth it?

Only if you want Verona as well. The three Venice departures cost 215, 251 and 1,025 EUR. The train takes 1 h 12 to 1 h 28 and a tasting from Verona starts at 29 EUR. The Prosecco Hills are the better Venice day; see Prosecco Hills wine tours.

Can children come?

Policies differ. The 70 EUR winery accepts prams and is wheelchair accessible; the Amarone minivan tour says under-18s may not drink; the e-bike tour needs a rider of at least 150 cm. Ask the winery about the tasting room before you bring a stroller.

Staying in Venice instead?

The Prosecco Hills tours start at Conegliano station and include lunch in 13 of 20 cases.
