Small-Group Venice Day Trip: Soave, Villa Serego Alighieri Amarone Tasting, Verona Time
A driver-guide takes a group of no more than eight from Venice into the Veneto wine country. The route covers the Church of San Giorgio in Valpolicella, known for its 8th-century altar, and a winery in the Valpolicella valley, where the talk is about how the region makes its wine and the glass holds Amarone. The day finishes in Verona with about three hours free, in the city tied to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Because the group is so small, the driver-guide can give everyone individual attention.

Rio Terà Sant'Andrea, 460, Venezia
Meet the driver 15 minutes before departure, on the left-hand side of Piazzale Roma, in the car park area in front of Hotel Olimpia. Look for the sign with the tour name and the orange umbrella. Address: Rio Terà Sant'Andrea 460, 30135 Venezia.
Soave
A short stop in the medieval town of Soave, known for its wine, its castle and its views over the vineyards. The road then continues into Valpolicella along country lanes lined with olive groves and vines, to a local estate for a winery visit and tasting.
Villa Serego Alighieri
A walk through the vineyard and an introduction to Amarone. The name translates as 'the great bitter', and the wine is a rich, dry red made from partially dried Valpolicella grapes. A selection of the estate's wines is tasted, and bottles can be bought to take home.
Verona
The road leads from the countryside into Verona, the setting of Romeo and Juliet. About three hours of free time allow for exploring on your own. The driver-guide can suggest a cafe for lunch (own expense). Piazza delle Erbe is good for shopping, and Juliet's House has the balcony linked to Shakespeare.
