San Gimignano Wine Tours: Vernaccia in an Hour or Two

Twenty tours from 25 to 285 EUR, median 65 and 1.8 hours. Six of them are the same farm, and one Vespa tour holds 20% of the reviews.

Six of the twenty listings on this page are the same farm. Podere La Marronaia, a few minutes from the walls, sells a wine and olive oil tasting in six versions, from 42 to 75 EUR, and that says what San Gimignano wine tours are: short, small and mostly a table on a farm, not a tour in the sense Chianti means it. The median listing lasts 1.8 hours and costs 65 EUR. This page sorts the twenty, sets the farm against the tasting room in the fortress and the horseback rides, and says what the Vernaccia rulebook actually promises. The white wine is the reason to come, and it is a quieter reason than the towers.

Prices are per person as listed, read on 30 September 2026. "Private" on this page mostly means a private tasting at a farm, not a car: the one we opened seats up to 15 and costs 68 EUR.

San Gimignano wine tours: a short-format page

Everything here sorts by length, and length sorts by kind. Fourteen listings run three hours or less, cost 25 to 80 EUR and sit in a tasting room or on a farm. Five run four to seven hours, at 60 to 285 EUR, and those are the horseback rides, the Vespa tour and the small-group Vernaccia day. One, at 12 hours and 199 EUR, is a day from Rome. The wine towns are close enough to the towers that nobody needs a coach to reach them, and that is why the page looks so different from its neighbour, the Tuscany day trips.

A tasting inside the walls

The one tasting room in the town itself is in the Rocca di Montestaffoli, the fortress at the top of the old centre. The listing offers five wines with food pairings and water for 48 EUR in 75 minutes, for up to 12 people, wheelchair accessible, and marked as likely to sell out. It has 25 reviews at 4.8.

That is the cleanest entry point to Vernaccia in the page: no transfer, no lunch to budget, and the wine is poured where you are already walking. Another listing, "5 Wine Tastings in San Gimignano" at 65 EUR for two hours, is similar.

What the price buys: minutes, mostly

Chart of the 20 San Gimignano & Vernaccia Wine Tours listings by price and length, median 65 EUR
Each mark is one of the 20 listings, placed by length and price. The tastings bunch up under two hours; the long days float above. · Wine Tours Editorial, from the prices of the tours listed on this site

The chart is almost a single cluster. Eleven listings last 2 hours or less and cost between 25 and 75 EUR, with the private tastings (blue) mixed in among the shared ones. Price barely rises with length up to four hours, where a 60 EUR dinner listing sits. Then the line breaks: a 120 EUR horseback ride, a 134 EUR Vespa tour, a 190 EUR horseback day, a 285 EUR small group and, far right, the 12 hour trip from Rome. In the cluster, time is almost free. Past four hours you start paying for a vehicle, a horse or a driver.

One farm, six listings

Podere La Marronaia, a biodynamic farm whose base is a few minutes from the town centre, appears six times: 42, 50, 50, 68, 68 and 75 EUR for 0.8 to 1.5 hours, all flagged private. Together they carry 249 of the 1,316 reviews, 19%. The farm is on the Certaldo road; the listing gives a bus from Poggibonsi that stops in front of the property, and the nearest stations are Poggibonsi and Certaldo. Hotel pickup and transport to the farm are not included.

The 68 EUR version, 90 minutes, is a Tuscan meal with four to five organic and biodynamic wines, including Vernaccia and Chianti Colli Senesi, six olive oils and three balsamic vinegars, in front of what the listing calls one of the oldest Vernaccia vineyards in the town. The cheapest, at 42 EUR for 48 minutes, is wine and olive oil only.

Six listings are one experience at six prices. When you choose among them, you are choosing how much food comes with the wine.

Take the farm out and the other fourteen listings have the same median, 65 EUR, and 1,067 reviews. The farm does not distort the page; it fills the short end of it.

What the Vernaccia rulebook says

Vernaccia di San Gimignano, from the disciplinare and trade press.
Rule What it says
StatusDOC by decree of 3 March 1966; DOCG from 9 July 1993
GrapeVernaccia, with other white varieties allowed up to 15%
AltitudeVineyards no higher than 500 m above sea level
SoilPliocene sands and sandy clays, locally known as yellow sands
AgeingRiserva needs at least 11 months, then 3 in bottle
AlcoholAt least 10.5% by volume, 12% for Riserva

Vernaccia di San Gimignano is a white wine tied to one place, and the rulebook keeps it a hill wine: picked no higher than 500 m, on sandy soils. The municipality has about 2,000 ha of vines, of which roughly 750 ha, 38%, are Vernaccia DOCG. The 2025 vintage produced 3.85 million litres, down 6% (trade press quoting the Consortium).

Farms a few minutes from the walls

San Gimignano is ringed by working farms, and several listings send you to one. From the top of the old town you look out over exactly that country: cypresses, olive terraces and vines running to the horizon, with the farms a few minutes down the road.

The farm we opened does not include transport. Decide before you book how you will get there: by car, by the bus that stops at its gate, or by a taxi from the walls.

Vespa, horses and the long day

A handful of listings break the pattern. The page's biggest seller is not a tasting: the Vespa tour from San Gimignano, 134 EUR for six hours with lunch and a wine tasting, has 266 reviews at a perfect 5.0. Two horseback listings, from Fun In Tuscany at 190 EUR and from Italy on a Budget tours at 120, each run seven hours with lunch. Italy on a Budget also runs the Vespa and the Rome day, and holds 25% of the page's reviews across its three listings. A small-group Vernaccia day at 285 EUR completes the long end. Ratings are high and the samples small: the two horseback rides have 67 and 40 reviews.

Tasting room or farm: how to choose

A tasting room is a wine lesson. A farm is a meal with a wine lesson attached. If you have one hour and want to taste Vernaccia in a glass, choose a room; 48 EUR for five wines in a fortress is the benchmark. If you want a lunch that happens to be in a vineyard, choose a farm, and budget 68 to 80 EUR: the 80 EUR listing is an organic family winery with a food and wine tasting lasting 2.8 hours and 188 reviews at a perfect 5.0. If you want a view of the towers and a scooter, choose the Vespa. And if you want San Gimignano as one stop among others, take a Tuscany day trip instead.

The same hills are also home to bigger reds: see Montalcino and Montepulciano for the long-day and e-bike versions, or the Tuscany overview for the whole region.

Questions about San Gimignano wine tours

What is Vernaccia di San Gimignano?

A white wine from the Vernaccia grape grown on hills around the town, with its own DOC since 1966 and DOCG since 1993. Other white varieties can make up to 15%, and vineyards may not climb above 500 m.

Can I taste Vernaccia in the town itself?

Yes. There is a tasting room in the Rocca di Montestaffoli, the fortress at the top of the old centre: five wines with food pairings for 48 EUR in 75 minutes, per its listing.

Is a day in San Gimignano enough, or is it a half day?

For wine it is a half day at most: the median listing lasts 1.8 hours. Fourteen of the twenty are three hours or less. Longer listings add horses, a Vespa or a longer lunch.

Do I need a car?

Not for the town. For farms a few minutes away, yes or a taxi; one farm lists a bus from Poggibonsi that stops in front of the property. Only one of the twenty listings includes hotel pickup.

Why does one farm appear six times?

It sells the same experience at six sizes, from a 42 EUR wine and oil tasting to a 75 EUR tasting with a meal. Choose by how much food you want.
