Montalcino and Brunello Wine Tours: Three Products, One Name
Twenty tours from 32.50 to 776 EUR, median 225. The dearest leaves out the wine, and one small-group day holds 38% of all the reviews.
The dearest Brunello tour on this page costs 776 EUR and does not include a glass of wine. It is a private minivan with a driver for up to 15 people across Montalcino, Montepulciano and Pienza, and lunch and tasting fees are extra. That is the widest gap in the Tuscany catalogue between what a price says and what it buys, and it is why these Montalcino and Brunello wine tours repay a careful read. The twenty listings run from 32.50 to 775.80 EUR, median 225, and they are three products under one name: a short tasting, a small-group day from Siena and a private car. This page sorts them, shows what each one includes and sets them against what the cellar charges at its own door.
Prices are per person as listed, read on 30 September 2026. On private listings the price is very often for the vehicle, and each one is flagged below.

Montalcino wine tours: three products under one name
Sorted by what they are, the twenty listings fall into three groups. Three are short tastings of 1.5 to 1.8 hours, at 32.50, 40 and 59 EUR. Ten are shared days and half days, 92 to 499 EUR. Seven are private cars, 220 to 776 EUR. The median of 225 EUR fits the shared days better than it fits the tastings or the cars, so read each group on its own.
| Kind | Listings | Price range (EUR) | Median (EUR) | Length | Lunch listed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Short tasting at a cellar or castle | 3 | 32.50 to 59 | 40 | 1.5 to 1.8 hours | 1 of 3 |
| Shared day or half day | 10 | 92 to 499 | 203 | 5.5 to 12 hours | 8 of 10 |
| Private car or driver | 7 | 220 to 776 | 580 | 4 to 11.5 hours | 3 of 7 |
The 190 EUR day from Siena
The listing with the most reviews, 1,030 at 4.9, is a small group of no more than eight that meets at Piazza San Domenico in Siena and runs nine hours. It visits three wineries, includes lunch at one of them, leaves time in the village of Montalcino and stops at the abbey of Sant'Antimo. The price is 190 EUR, and hotel pickup is not part of it.
That is the benchmark for the page. A small-group day with two wineries and a pairing lunch is 229 EUR over eight hours. A shared day at 92 EUR, with two wine and cheese tastings across eleven and a half hours, is cheaper for a reason you can read in the length.
What the price buys
The chart makes the point before the text does. Shared days lie along the bottom: 5.5 to 12 hours for 92 to 245 EUR, plus one outlier, a six hour day at 499. Private cars rise above them: 400 to 700 EUR for eight hours, 580 and 599 for eleven. Between the two sits a four hour private tour at 220 EUR, close to what a shared day costs.
Montalcino is 32 km from Siena in a straight line, about 40 km by road, and 82 km from Florence as the crow flies.
Rosso, Brunello and what the door charges
Brunello di Montalcino is Sangiovese and nothing else, and it reached DOCG on 1 July 1980, among the first wines in Italy to do so. Its younger sibling, Rosso di Montalcino, is a separate denomination from the same hills, with 519.7 ha in December 2023 and another 350 ha of expansion approved, against about 2,000 ha of Brunello. The Consortium counts 310 members, 258 small cellars and 52 large ones. Only 15% of the municipality's 24,000 ha is planted with vines, at altitudes of 120 to 650 m.
The door price shows where the ladder starts. At Castello Banfi the public tour is 60 EUR, a tour with lunch is 125 to 140, a "Discovering Excellence" visit 300 and the top tiers 450 to 500; booking is compulsory. Il Poggione, in Sant'Angelo in Colle, takes visitors by appointment only. Against that, a 32.50 EUR tasting on this page is a door-rate pour and a 190 EUR day is three of them and a lunch.
Ask which wines are in the flight. A Rosso, a Brunello and a Riserva are three different afternoons, and a price that does not name them is not comparable with one that does.
Sant'Antimo, Pienza and Montepulciano fill the day
Few Montalcino listings stay in Montalcino. Four combine it with Montepulciano, and two name Pienza and its cheese in the title, at 550 and 700 EUR, both private. The best-reviewed small group calls at the abbey of Sant'Antimo, which a listing photo caption dates to the eleventh century.
A combination is not a bargain. You trade cellar time for a second town, and the day stays long. If you want Brunello alone, choose a listing whose itinerary has three wineries and no other towns.
Who runs them, and what the ratings hide
Fifteen operators run the twenty listings. Tuscan Escapes by Papilio holds 40% of the reviews, with two listings and 1,072 of the 2,700. Keys of Italy holds 15%, myTour in Italy 10%, Hidden Experiences 7%. The weighted rating is 4.75; take out the top listing and it is 4.65.
The spread underneath is wide. The three lowest ratings on the page, 4.1, 4.1 and 4.0, all belong to myTour in Italy, on 119, 96 and 66 reviews. Eight listings hold a perfect 5.0, and all of them rest on between 28 and 98 reviews, 449 in total. A 5.0 from 45 people and a 4.9 from 1,030 are different kinds of evidence, and the page does not let the first outrank the second.
Reading a private price
Private listings need their own rule. Take the 776 EUR listing: it is a private tour in an air-conditioned minivan, hotel pickup included, up to 15 travellers per booking, with lunch and wine tasting fees left out. The price is a vehicle, not a person. Other private listings here are 400, 550, 580, 599 and 700 EUR and may be priced the same way; the listing will say how many travellers the price covers, and that line is worth reading first. The cheap end of the private group is different again: a 59 EUR tasting with a three-course lunch at a castle and a 220 EUR four hour private tour.
If a 580 EUR listing is priced per vehicle, four people in it pay 145 EUR each for a driver who knows the roads and a flexible start, and a solo traveller pays 580. That is simply the unit.
Checklist before you book
Count the wineries in the itinerary and ask whether the tasting includes Rosso, Brunello or a Riserva. Check who drives, because pickup is on nine of the twenty listings and the rest meet you at a station, a square or the cellar. Note the group size: the best-reviewed listing caps at eight. Read whether lunch is listed, which it is on twelve, and whether it is at a winery or a town restaurant. Then compare the day with the alternatives on the same hills: the Montepulciano page is cheaper and shorter, San Gimignano is shorter still, and the Tuscany day trips are the sightseeing version. The region as a whole is on the Tuscany page.
Questions about Montalcino and Brunello wine tours
Can I visit Montalcino without a car?
You can reach the town: buses from Siena change at Buonconvento and take about two hours. You cannot easily reach the cellars. Castello Banfi says the castle and the cellar are 4 km apart and need a car. That is why most of these listings include transport.
How much does a Brunello tasting cost at the door?
At Castello Banfi the public tour is 60 EUR and booking is compulsory. Il Poggione takes visitors by appointment only. On this page, a tasting at a cellar costs 32.50 to 59 EUR.
Is a private Montalcino tour priced per person?
Usually for the vehicle. The 776 EUR listing is a minivan for up to 15 travellers with lunch and tasting fees excluded. Check how many travellers the price covers before comparing it with a shared day.
What is the difference between Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino?
Both are Sangiovese from the same hills. Brunello is the top denomination, a DOCG since 1980, with about 2,000 ha; Rosso di Montalcino is a separate denomination with 519.7 ha in December 2023. A tasting that includes both shows the gap.
When is the Brunello harvest?
In 2026 it opened on 7 September, a week earlier than in 2025 and for about three weeks, according to the Consortium's president quoted in trade press. Cellars are at work then, so book ahead.
Which listing has the most reviews?
The small-group trip from Siena at 190 EUR: 1,030 reviews at 4.9, nine hours, three wineries and lunch, up to eight people.
Cheaper, shorter, next door
Montepulciano is 24 km from Montalcino in a straight line and its median is less than half.
