Montepulciano Wine Tours: Vino Nobile by Bike, Cellar or Car
Twenty tours from 25 to 693 EUR, median 103. The most reviewed is an e-bike ride, and one listing is not a Vino Nobile tasting at all.
The most reviewed Montepulciano wine tour is not a tasting. It is an e-bike ride: 183 reviews at 4.9, 159 EUR for five hours, two cellars and eight Montepulciano wines, on white dirt roads where, the listing warns, you must already know how to ride a bicycle on hills. That tells you how this page works. These twenty Montepulciano wine tours run from 25 to 693 EUR, median 103, and they lean short: eleven take three hours or less. They are also thinly reviewed, 730 reviews in all and twelve listings with fewer than twenty each. Below: what the listings are, which ones are not about Vino Nobile at all, and what the denomination in fact is.
Prices are per person as listed, read on 30 September 2026. A private price is often for the group, and the listing says how many it covers.

Montepulciano wine tours by length
Length sorts these listings better than anything else. Eleven are tastings of up to three hours, at 25 to 132 EUR and a median of 50, in cellars under the old town or on farms in the country around it. Six run three to seven hours, at 159 to 499 EUR, and these are the e-bike, the Vespa and the full-day small groups. Three run nine hours, at 110, 435 and 693 EUR, and those are the private Tuscany days and a long trip from Siena.
| Length | Listings | Price range (EUR) | Median (EUR) | Lunch listed | What they are |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 3 hours | 11 | 25 to 132 | 50 | 2 of 11 | Cellar and farm tastings, a sommelier room, private guided visits |
| 3 to 7 hours | 6 | 159 to 499 | 254 | 4 of 6 | E-bike, Vespa, full-day small groups |
| 9 hours | 3 | 110 to 693 | 435 | 2 of 3 | Private Tuscany days and a trip from Siena |
San Biagio and the wine road
The e-bike listing starts in the main square, Piazza Grande, and follows the Nobile wine road through vineyards, with a stop at the Tempio di San Biagio, the Renaissance church the listing places in a meadow where the Val d'Orcia meets the Val di Chiana. It names four partner cellars, Boscarelli, Canneto, Molinaccio and Salcheto, and books two of them, depending on availability.
The arrival at the showroom is planned for 10:30, and lunch, the listing notes, is an extra. Helmet, backpack and van assistance are included. You start where the bikes are, ten metres from the corner of the main square.
What the price buys
The left side of the chart is crowded: nine listings at two hours or less, between 25 and 132 EUR, with the private ones (blue) in the same band as the shared. After three hours the price breaks away. The e-bike and a 160 EUR private tour cluster near 160; a full-day group and a Vespa ride reach 249 and 259 EUR; then 400 for a seven hour private day and 435, 499 and 693 at the top. The median, 103 EUR, falls in a gap between a 95 EUR meal and a 110 EUR trip from Siena: a quarter of the listings cost less than 49 EUR and a quarter more than 250.
Not every Montepulciano tasting is Vino Nobile
Read the listing, because the town's name is on every title and the wine is not. One, at 69 EUR, is a comparative tasting of nine wines "from the top winemaking regions" of Italy, in a vaulted room a few steps from the main square that the listing dates to 1270. It is a good class and has 57 reviews at 4.9, but it is not a Vino Nobile tasting. Another, at 95 EUR, is a romantic meal in an olive grove with Tuscan wines. A third is a nine hour trip from Siena that stops in Montepulciano for lunch.
There is a second confusion. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is a red from the Abruzzo region made from a grape called Montepulciano. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is made in the Tuscan town, mainly from Sangiovese, which locals call Prugnolo Gentile. They share a name and nothing else. If a listing does not say Nobile or Rosso, ask which wine is in the glass.
The name on the title is a town. The wine on the table might be from anywhere in Italy.
Montepulciano d'ogni vino è re.
The denomination in numbers
Montepulciano's wine has a written history. The Consortium was founded in 1965; the Vino Nobile became a DOC on 12 July 1966 and was listed as DOCG from 1 July 1980, among the first in Italy. The area has about 2,000 ha of vines: roughly 1,200 ha for the DOCG and 390 ha for Rosso di Montepulciano, the younger wine. There are about 90 bottlers, 81 of them in the Consortium, and more than 250 growers. In 2024 the area produced 6.7 million bottles of Nobile and 2.3 million of Rosso.
A new tier arrived in 2025. Nobile Pieve, first vintage 2021, comes from twelve sub-zones named after old parishes, and at full production should reach around 600,000 bottles. Few listings here mention it, but the estates that do can pour it.
Out of town: e-bikes, Vespas and farm tastings
Outside the walls, the country around Montepulciano is olive terraces, cypresses and farms on hillsides, and most of the longer listings go there. A Romantic Vespa tour with wine tasting costs 259 EUR for five hours; a three-estate private day costs 400 for seven; the e-bike stays on the wine road itself. The short farm tastings, at 25 to 50 EUR, are the cheapest way into a cellar, and three of them, at 25, 30 and 35 EUR, have 10 to 19 reviews each.
With so few reviews, prefer listings that name their estate and tell you which wines you will pour.
Who runs them, and how thin the ratings are
Sixteen operators share the twenty listings. Hidden Experiences and Urban Bikery each hold 25% of the reviews, 184 and 183. The weighted rating is 4.72, or 4.65 without the e-bike. Four listings rate between 4.1 and 4.4: a wine tasting and lunch at 4.1 on 43 reviews, a nine hour trip from Siena at 4.1 on 18, a 55 EUR tasting tour at 4.4 and the olive-grove meal at 4.4. Twelve listings have fewer than twenty reviews each, so one or two opinions can move a rating by several tenths. Treat a 5.0 here as a first impression and compare the itinerary.
Choosing a Montepulciano tour
If you are fit and want landscape, take the e-bike. If you want to learn, take the sommelier room, knowing it is an Italy-wide class. If you want an hour at a producer's door, choose a farm tasting at 25 to 50 EUR and ask about Nobile. If you want a day, the full-day small group with two wineries, tasting and lunch is 249 EUR over six hours, 81 reviews at 4.8; the private three-estate day is 400 EUR for seven, with 24 reviews at a perfect 5.0. Montepulciano is 24 km from Montalcino in a straight line, so combined days exist, but the Tuscany day trips are the sightseeing version and San Gimignano is the short white-wine one. The region overview is on the Tuscany page.
Questions about Montepulciano wine tours
Is Vino Nobile the same as Montepulciano d'Abruzzo?
No. Vino Nobile is a Tuscan DOCG made from Sangiovese around the town of Montepulciano. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is a red from Abruzzo made from a grape with the same name. Check which one a tasting pours.
What is Rosso di Montepulciano?
The younger sibling of the Nobile, from the same hills: about 390 ha against roughly 1,200 ha for the DOCG, and 2.3 million bottles in 2024 against 6.7 million of Nobile.
Can I reach Montepulciano by train?
Not directly. The usual route is a train to Chiusi-Chianciano Terme and a local train of about 13 minutes from there, from 3.01 EUR. The cellars still need a bike, a bus or a driver.
Do I need to book a cellar?
Yes. Contucci, in the old town, takes visits by phone or email; Avignonesi takes bookings online, according to listing sites. The e-bike operator calls you a few days before to confirm the cellars and the start time.
What is Nobile Pieve?
A new tier of Vino Nobile from twelve sub-zones named after old parishes. The first vintage was 2021, released in 2025, and the Consortium expects about 600,000 bottles at full production.
Is the e-bike tour hard?
The listing says it is suitable for all fitness levels but also that you need sufficient physical condition and must be able to ride on white dirt roads in hilly terrain. It is not recommended for travellers with spinal injuries, heart problems or pregnancy.
Something shorter and whiter
San Gimignano has a median of 1.8 hours and 65 EUR, and a white wine to go with it.
