Two-Winery Walking Tour from Piazza Grande, Montepulciano: Oak-Barrel Cellars, 2.5 Hours
This 2.5-hour walking tour goes into the underground cellars of Montepulciano, where wine matures in oak barrels, and explains how it is made. It starts in Piazza Grande, in the historic center, at a time chosen when booking. The walk passes Renaissance buildings, and some of them have ancient wineries beneath them. Inside are brick walls, underground chambers and large oak barrels, and the guide tells the history of the wine culture in the area. Vino Nobile gets its own explanation, including what sets it apart. The first winery ends with a tasting of local wines. The second winery covers the town's wine classifications and the grape varieties behind its wines, and closes with another tasting. The tour then returns to the original meeting point.
