Private Burgundy Wine Tours: What Moves the Price

18 private tours from 55 to 2,353 EUR, median 571. The same two estates cost 555 EUR on one listing and 1,290 EUR on another.

Two private days from Paris visit the same two named estates, Jean-Marc Brocard in Chablis and Château de Pommard. One costs 555 EUR and lasts 14 hours. The other costs 1,290 EUR and lasts 12. Nothing on the tasting list explains the gap: the difference is who sells it, how many seats the car has and how the price is counted. That is the real subject of a private Burgundy tour. The 18 listings here run from a 55 EUR sommelier tasting in Beaune to a 2,353 EUR round trip from Paris, median 571 EUR, all rated between 4.3 and 5.0 and averaging 4.96. The page explains what moves the number: where the car starts, how many travellers it carries and what sits in the price. Regional background is on the Burgundy page.

Private tours are also the quietest pages in the catalogue. The 18 listings have 450 reviews between them, fewer than one shared bike day in the Côte d'Or, and one operator holds 39% of them. Eleven of the 18 have fewer than ten. A 5.0 here often means three people said so, so read the review count before the score.

Where the car starts decides the price

Sort the 18 by starting city and three markets appear. The 12 that start in Dijon or Beaune carry 383 of the 450 reviews and cost a median 568.5 EUR; the eleven full days among them run from 425 to 1,195 EUR. The three that start in Lyon are really three different products, from a 230 EUR half day in the Mâconnais to a 1,320 EUR day that reaches Gevrey-Chambertin. The three from Paris have 24 reviews among them and include the dearest listing on the page.

Chart of the 18 Private Burgundy Wine Tours listings by price and length, median 571 EUR
The 18 private listings by length and price. Sixteen run seven hours or more, and the price spread inside that band is fivefold. · Wine Tours Editorial, from the prices of the tours listed on this site

The scatter makes one thing plain. Sixteen of the 18 last seven hours or more, so length separates nothing. Inside that band the prices run from 425 to 2,353 EUR, and the distinguishing factors are the ones the chart cannot show: starting city, party size and whether lunch is in the price.

Two days from Paris, one price gap

The 555 EUR listing leaves Paris at 7:30, drives about 190 km to Chablis, tastes at Jean-Marc Brocard and at Maison Régnard, spends an hour and a half free in the village, continues 135 km to Château de Pommard for a five-wine tasting and is back in Paris around 21:00. The 1,290 EUR listing follows almost the same line: Brocard and a second Chablis producer, lunch time in Beaune, Château de Pommard and the Hôtel-Dieu, with the Hospices ticket included, home after a 312 km drive.

The cheaper one describes itself as a retreat for two to seven people in a Mercedes car or minivan and mentions pricing tiers by party size. The dearer has a cap of seven and a price that does not say how it divides.

When two listings share the same estates, the question is never the wine. It is what the unit of the price is.

Hotel pickup in Dijon

The photo is the front of Dijon's town hall, in a city where several private days begin. At least three of the 12 local listings include hotel pickup and drop-off or meet you at your accommodation; the 55 EUR tasting needs neither, because you walk into a shop in Beaune.

The Paris listings also pick up at your hotel, which is why they run 12 to 14 hours door to door.

Party size: divide before you compare

Nearly every full-day private listing caps the booking: 7 travellers for the 750 EUR Côte d'Or day, the 1,290 EUR Chablis day and the 2,353 EUR Paris day, 8 for the 695 EUR six-cru day and the 1,320 EUR Lyon day, and 15 for the 1,000 EUR Beaune route. The prices look like prices for the whole party. Do the division and you get a different ranking.

Illustrative arithmetic if the listed price covers the whole party and the vehicle is full.

Beaune wine route, hotel pickup1,000 EUR15about 67 EUR
Paris to Chablis and Beaune2,353 EUR7about 336 EUR

These are illustrations, not quotes. The listings do not always say whether the price is per person or per party, and two of them mention tiered pricing. Open the booking page, enter your headcount and read the total before comparing two private days. A tour that looks twice as dear at the listed price can be the cheaper one at your party size.

What the price leaves out

The 2,353 EUR Paris day is the clearest example. Its own inclusion list covers the car, the driver-guide and a short tour of Beaune. Entry to the Hospices (10 EUR per person), a lunch in a Burgundian restaurant (about 20 EUR), and a visit and tasting at Meursault or Santenay (about 20 EUR) are all listed as extras, and so is any wine tasting. At seven travellers that is a day where the big price buys the vehicle and the time, not the wine.

The same pattern runs through the set. The 750 EUR, 1,000 EUR, 1,290 EUR and 1,320 EUR days all leave lunch to you. The Clos de Vougeot stop on the 1,000 EUR route is the kind of extra that does earn its place: the château's 12th-century vat house holds four monumental wooden presses from the Middle Ages, and a guide who can explain them is worth having on the day.

Bronze statue of a grape-treader on a fountain in Place François-Rude, Dijon

What the private guides explain

The bronze in the photo is a grape-treader on the Place François-Rude in Dijon, a reminder of the subject the private days spend most time on: how the wine is made. The 750 EUR day stops in the vineyard for a map-reading lesson on climats, visits two estates and tastes 12 wines including four premier or grand crus, with lunch at a traditional restaurant not included. The 695 EUR day from Authentica puts 15 to 20 wines into three tastings and serves a set-menu lunch at an estate, except on Sundays, when estate lunches are not available.

From Lyon: the south of Burgundy, not the Côte d'Or

The three Lyon listings are the most misleading in the set because the word Burgundy stretches a long way. The 230 EUR half day takes the train from Part-Dieu to Mâcon and works the Mâconnais in a vintage Land Rover: Vergisson, the Roche de Solutré, Solutré-Pouilly and a young couple's domain in Leynes. It has 37 reviews at 5.0 and it is a good half day, but it is white-wine country in the south, well away from Gevrey-Chambertin. The 498 EUR day is an eight-hour vintage Land Rover day from Lyon, with lunch. Only the 1,320 EUR, 9-hour day reaches Beaune, the Côte de Nuits and Gevrey, with hotel pickup and lunch left to you.

The 55 EUR private tasting, and the Sunday problem

The cheapest listing is not a tour. It is a personal tasting of seven premier and grand cru wines, three white and four red, about an hour and three quarters, with your own sommelier in a shop in Beaune. The wines are for sale and can be shipped. For anyone who wants a grand cru in the glass without a driver, it is the best value on the page.

Sundays are the quiet trap. The six-cru day cannot serve lunch at an estate on a Sunday, and the Chablis operator notes that both of its named Chablis houses are closed on Sundays, so it swaps them for other domaines with the same number of tastings. Book weekdays for the estates you have your heart set on.

Three days at one price: 425 EUR

One operator lists three private full days at exactly 425 EUR: the Côte de Nuits, the Côte de Beaune, and both. Together they have 22 reviews. If the price is the same for one slope or two, the extra slope is free, so the combined day is the obvious pick unless you want a slower morning on a single hill. At 425 EUR it is also the lowest price for a private full day on the page, against a median of 587 EUR for the local full days.

Questions about private Burgundy wine tours

Is a private Burgundy wine tour worth the money?

If you are four to seven people and want to choose the villages, often yes: a 425 to 750 EUR full day divides to about 60 to 107 EUR each if the price covers the vehicle. For a couple, 425 EUR is 212 each, and a shared day starts at 133.

Are the listed prices per person?

The listings rarely say, for the full days. Most cap the booking at 7 or 8 travellers and read as a price for the party. The exceptions are the tastings. Always check the total for your headcount on the booking page.

Can I do it from Paris?

You can, in 12 to 14 hours and at 555 to 2,353 EUR. The train to Dijon takes 1 h 34 and leaves you in the wine country by lunchtime, so a local start is a better use of the day.

Is lunch included?

On three of the 18, including the set-menu lunch in the six-cru day. On the rest you pay a restaurant directly, and the operators usually book it for you.

Can we taste at Romanée-Conti?

No listing promises it. They stop at the plot or drive past it, and the pours come from other domaines.

Which start gives the best result for a first visit?

Beaune. It is the hinge between the two slopes, and the local days from there cover both Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune in one route.
