This half-day private tour runs from Lyon to Burgundy in a vintage Land Rover. The south of Burgundy, known as the Mâconnais and bordering Beaujolais, makes white wine. Wine is the area's first source of income, and it works less like an industry than a way of life. Most producers are small, and they are free to make wine in their own style within the limits the appellation sets. The hosts have been coming here for years and know the area well. They present themselves as the friend of a friend you would like to have in a place you do not know, and they treat guests as travelers rather than tourists. The itinerary is an outline. The half day is usually adapted on the spot to get the most out of the time guests spend.

  1. Gare de la Part Dieu, a, Lyon

After a short train ride from Lyon Part-Dieu to Mâcon, the guides meet you at the station and set off on the country roads and vineyards of southern Burgundy.

  2. Verze

The first stop is in the vines, at a good viewpoint. The guides talk about Burgundy wine and open a bottle from that same vineyard to taste.

  3. Vergisson

Small country roads lead to a quiet village tucked between two hills. A winery visit and a white wine tasting follow, so the winery comes after the vines have been seen.

  4. La Roche de Solutre

The oldest trace of human presence here dates to prehistory. In the 1980s a French president climbed the hill every year to honor the World War II resistance. The optional walk to the top is an easy 40 minutes at a slow pace.

  5. Solutre-Pouilly

This is probably the best-known village of the day. The guides tell the story of a real druid who lives here and the wine he grows. A proper tasting of different regional wines follows, with a professional.

  6. Leynes

The last stop is a domain run by a young couple from the new generation of winemakers. They pour wines grown in both Mâconnais (Burgundy) and Beaujolais, and share their view on new techniques and trends.

  7. Gare de la Part Dieu, a, Lyon
