Private Bordeaux Wine Tours: What a Car Costs for 2, 4 or 6
20 private tours from 110 to 930 EUR, median 500. Split four ways, that median is 125 EUR a head, less than a shared Saint-Émilion day.
Split four ways, the 500 EUR median for a private Bordeaux wine tour is 125 EUR a head, less than the 167 EUR a shared Saint-Émilion full day costs. Split six ways it is 83 EUR, under a shared half day. Split two ways it is 250. That arithmetic is the whole argument for this page, and it only works if the price covers the car. On the listings we opened, it does: the party is capped at 6 or 8 a booking and the vehicle is part of the price. There are 20 private tours here, from 110 EUR for a short ride to 930 EUR for a ten hour day, and they differ less in luxury than in what is included. The region and the train times are in the Bordeaux guide.
Treat the per-vehicle reading as a working assumption, and confirm the group size on the booking page before you divide. The same price can include tastings and château fees or leave them out, and that difference moves the real cost by more than the car type does.

What the price covers, and what it does not
Start with the shape. Six tours are half days of 1.5 to 4.5 hours, costing 110 to 410 EUR, median 268. Fourteen run longer, 6 to 10 hours, costing 288 to 930 EUR, median 563. The cheapest all-day private in the catalogue is 288 EUR for 8 hours to Saint-Émilion and 288 EUR for 9 hours in the Médoc, both from the same operator, Olala Bordeaux. One listing shows a 24 hour duration in the feed; its own description puts the day at 9:00 to 6:30 pm.
| Listing | Price | Party | Included | Not included |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private Wine Lovers, Super St Emilion | 540 EUR | Up to 8 | Hotel pickup, transport, château visit and tasting fees, insurance, guide | Meals |
| A day in St-Émilion in a luxury van | 750 EUR | Up to 6 | Private transport, water, WiFi, driver and guide | Château visits and tastings, meals, gratuities |
That table is the lesson of this format. The 540 EUR day is the cheaper of the two and it includes the tastings. The 750 EUR day is the dearer and it leaves the château fees to you. Read the included and not included lists on every private listing before you compare numbers, because a cheaper ticket can be the more expensive day.
Pickup at your door
The bridge at night is the Pont de Pierre over the Garonne, in the city these days start from. 19 of the 20 private tours include hotel pickup, against 43% across the whole Bordeaux catalogue, which is the main convenience you are buying beyond the car.
It also changes the shape of the day. A shared tour leaves from a meeting point at a fixed hour. A private day leaves when you are ready, and the itinerary can be adjusted to your tastes. One listing states the day runs 9:00 to 6:30 pm with pickup and drop-off in the city, and says the operator visits three properties rather than two.
What the itineraries promise
The listings describe their days in unequal detail, and that is useful information. The 540 EUR day is the most specific: three properties in a day, of contrasting styles, one of them a classified Grand Cru where you meet the owner, a pass through Pomerol past Petrus, and time in the medieval village. The 750 EUR van day lists three châteaux chosen with you, each ending in a tasting, and photo stops outside names like Ausone, Angélus, Cheval Blanc and Petrus. The 930 EUR ten hour day is built around Saint-Émilion's underground monuments and a tasting of Grands Crus.
The pattern is that the dearest days do not simply add hours. They change the content: an insider guide, underground visits, time with an owner. If a listing gives you only a vehicle and the word private, the price is buying the vehicle, and you should ask which estates are included before you pay.
Half day, full day, or a ride
Not everything on this page is a wine tour in the strict sense. The 110 EUR listing is a 1.5 hour private ride through the vineyards from Saint-Émilion, from the same operator that runs the sidecar half day. The 244 EUR listing is 4.5 hours in a Citroën 2CV. The 285 EUR one is a vintage French presidential car for 4 hours. These sell the vehicle as much as the cellars, and the wine is a stop along the way.
| Vehicle | Price | Length | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private ride through the vines | 110 EUR | 1.5 h | From Saint-Émilion |
| Sidecar, half day | 250 EUR | 4.5 h | Saint-Émilion |
| Citroën 2CV | 244 EUR | 4.5 h | Médoc |
| Vintage presidential car | 285 EUR | 4 h | Saint-Émilion |
| Premium sedan, full day | 575 EUR | 8 h | Saint-Émilion |
| Luxury van, up to 6 | 750 EUR | 8 h | Saint-Émilion |
If you want a proper tasting, filter by length first. Below four hours the wine is a stop. At seven hours or more you are in a full cellar day, and the price, median 563 EUR, covers the guide's time as much as the car.
A private tour is a day with one person's attention. What you are buying is that person's local knowledge, and it is worth reading who they are before you read the car.
Where the day starts
The square in the photo is Place de la Bourse, in the centre of Bordeaux, where a pickup in the old town would naturally begin. The day then heads to one of two banks, and the catalogue shows a strong preference: 14 of the 20 private titles name Saint-Émilion, 4 name the Médoc, one names both and one starts from San Sebastián.
The spread is telling. Private Saint-Émilion days have a median of 525 EUR, private Médoc days 349 EUR, though that second figure rests on only four tours. The combined Saint-Émilion and Médoc day is 490 EUR. The one long-distance listing, a Bordeaux day from San Sebastián at 770 EUR for 10 hours, is also the only private tour here that includes lunch.
The sums for two, four and six
Here is the maths, using the lower quartile, the median and the upper quartile of the 20 tours, and assuming the price covers the vehicle. Shared benchmarks are the Saint-Émilion medians from the Saint-Émilion tours page: 96 EUR for a half day and 167 EUR for a full day.
| Listing price | Two people | Four people | Six people |
|---|---|---|---|
| 288 EUR (lower quartile) | 144 EUR | 72 EUR | 48 EUR |
| 500 EUR (median) | 250 EUR | 125 EUR | 83 EUR |
| 653 EUR (upper quartile) | 327 EUR | 163 EUR | 109 EUR |
Two people at the median pay 250 EUR each, roughly 50% more than a shared full day. Four people at the median pay 125 EUR, which is below the shared full day and about 30% above the half day. Six people at the median pay 83 EUR, less than a shared half day. The larger the party, the better the private price looks, until you reach the cap.
A 4.95 rating with 413 reviews
The weighted rating on this page is the highest in Bordeaux, and the evidence behind it is the thinnest. Twenty tours hold 413 reviews in all, against 9,178 for Saint-Émilion, and none has more than 42. The most reviewed is a 550 EUR private Médoc day at 5.0. Entre Vides Bordeaux has three tours and 24% of the reviews. Every tour sits between 4.7 and 5.0, which says the operators are attentive and little else.
A private guide's rating is also a rating of one person, so the useful signal is the content of the reviews rather than the score. Look for the number of châteaux visited, whether a tasting at a classified estate was included, and whether the guide adapted the route.
Who should book private, and who should not
Book private if you are four to six people, if you want to choose the estates yourself, if you need to move at your own pace or want to start at a fixed hour. Book shared if you are one or two travellers, if you care mostly about the price per head, or if you want to meet other people. A couple spending 250 EUR each can have a shared full day plus a good dinner for less. A family of five at 100 EUR each cannot do better.
Mistakes that cost a day
Comparing headline prices without the included list. Dividing by the wrong number: check the booking page for the party cap. Booking August, when many estates close; the Bordeaux guide has the calendar. Expecting a day on both banks, which works on paper and eats the tasting time. And forgetting lunch: only one of the 20 includes it, and the operator of a day at 540 EUR says a local brasserie lunch runs around 25 EUR a head.
Questions about private Bordeaux wine tours
Are these prices per person or per vehicle?
On the listings we opened, per booking: the party is capped at 6 or 8 and the price includes the vehicle. The booking page shows the party size, so confirm it before dividing. For a couple the cost per head is high, for four to six it is low.
Is a private Bordeaux wine tour worth it?
For four or more people, often yes, because the median of 500 EUR works out at 125 EUR a head or less. For two people it is about 250 EUR each, roughly 50% above a shared full day.
Are tastings included?
Not always. One 540 EUR day includes château visits and tasting fees. A 750 EUR day in a luxury van leaves them to you. Read the included and not included lists on each listing.
How long is a private day?
Half days run 1.5 to 4.5 hours. Full days run 6 to 10 hours, and the median across the 20 is 7.5. A typical day leaves around 9:00 and ends in the evening.
Saint-Émilion or the Médoc for a private tour?
Saint-Émilion dominates the listings, 14 of 20, at a median of 525 EUR. The Médoc has only four private days, median 349 EUR, and is the place where having a driver matters most, since the estates are spread out.
Can I start from San Sebastián?
One listing does, at 770 EUR for 10 hours and with lunch included. It is the only private Bordeaux tour that starts outside the city, so check travel times before booking.
Shared days are compared on the Saint-Émilion tours page and the Médoc and Margaux page.
