Médoc and Margaux Wine Tours from Bordeaux

16 tours from 45 to 750 EUR, median 160. Two listings from one operator carry 48% of the reviews, and only 3 titles name Margaux.

Two tours from one operator carry 48% of the reviews on the Médoc and Margaux wine tours, and both rate below 4.7. Strip them out and the other 14 score 4.83. That is the first thing to know about this page, because the 4.7 at the top is partly a story about two listings. The other facts are more practical: 16 tours, 45 to 750 EUR, a median of 160 EUR, and 10 of them are half days that mostly spend the morning in a minibus. This page covers what those tours enter, how the famous names fit in, which vehicles are on offer, and where the catalogue thins out. The regional picture, the train times and the 1855 access table are in the Bordeaux guide.

This is the smallest and least reviewed of the three Bordeaux tour pages, so individual ratings carry less weight here than on the Saint-Émilion page. Every price is per person as listed, and the four private days are priced differently: check whether the figure covers the car or each guest before you add the people up.

Sixteen tours, two speeds

Chart of the 16 Médoc & Margaux Wine Tours listings by price and length, median 160 EUR
Each dot is one Médoc tour by length and price: half days of 4 to 5 hours cluster at 90 to 105 EUR, full days at 160 to 199 EUR, plus a few private outliers. · Wine Tours Editorial, from the prices of the tours listed on this site

The shape is simple. Ten half days run 1.5 to 5 hours and cost 45 to 285 EUR, median 97. Six full days run 6 to 8.5 hours and cost 160 to 750 EUR, median 194. Strip the private outliers and the shared days group at 90 to 105 EUR for a half day and 160 to 199 EUR for a full one, almost the same money as Saint-Émilion's 96 and 167 EUR.

What you get for it differs. A Médoc half day includes the drive out along the left bank, typically one or two châteaux, a tasting, and the return. The median itinerary has four stops in our data. Only two of the 16 tours include lunch, both long days at 189 to 199 EUR, so eat before you go or plan a late lunch in town.

The top two rows belong to the same operator, and their 4.6 and 4.5 are the two lowest scores among the tours with more than 25 reviews. Ophorus has a weighted 4.56 across its 539 reviews here. Every other tour in the category, taken together, is 4.83 on 578. That does not make the Ophorus days bad. A sightseeing-heavy half day sells in large volumes and collects lukewarm reviews. It does mean the headline rating is not a clean guide to the typical Médoc day.

The Pont de Pierre and Saint-Michel church in Bordeaux at sunset

Leaving the city

Every one of these tours starts in or near Bordeaux, and the Pont de Pierre in the photo is the bridge to the right bank, the opposite direction from the Médoc. Pickup is offered on 31% of the listings, so five of the 16 will collect you, and the rest expect you at a meeting point.

The nearest estate is closer than people think. Château du Taillan lists itself at 12 km from the city, in Le Taillan-Médoc, with a cellar from the 16th century and a 90 minute visit at 45 EUR. Its listing says public transport is available nearby. It is the one Médoc tour you could try without a driver.

The famous names, and what the tours actually enter

The Médoc is where the 1855 list lives, so it is worth knowing the map. Pauillac has Lafite, Latour and Mouton Rothschild, three of the five first growths. Margaux has Château Margaux, a fourth. The fifth, Haut-Brion, is in Graves, south of the city. Saint-Julien and Saint-Estèphe fill in the rest of the northern communes.

Two rules cut through the brochure language. Château Margaux receives visitors by appointment, on weekdays, and is closed in August and during the harvest, according to local guides. Lafite Rothschild is closed to visitors until January 2028 for works, according to its own site. So a tour that says Margaux in the title is usually a Margaux village or a neighbouring estate in the appellation, not a tasting at the first growth, unless the itinerary names it.

Cars, a sidecar and a limousine

The unusual vehicles belong here. A Citroën DS limousine half day at 285 EUR, rated 5.0. A sidecar ride through the Médoc at 225 EUR for 3.5 hours. A private half day in a classic car at 499 EUR, and a chauffeured private day through Margaux, Pauillac and Saint-Julien at 750 EUR. Four of the five tours the catalogue flags as private are these car days, priced 225 to 750 EUR. The fifth is the 45 EUR Taillan visit.

Here the car is the product and the wine is the stop. That is a perfectly good reason to book, as long as the listing says how many estates you will enter.
The sidecar and the classic cars have tiny review counts, between 3 and 50, all at 5.0. Treat the scores as a sign the operators care, not as a comparison.

Place de la Bourse in Bordeaux

Base yourself in the city

The square in the photo is Place de la Bourse, on the river in the centre of the city. None of the tours here is long enough to justify a Médoc hotel: the longest full day is 8.5 hours. Sleeping in the city and joining a day from there keeps the options open for a second day on the other bank.

If you want both banks, do them on different days. The two tours that combine Saint-Émilion and the Médoc run 8 to 8.5 hours, so you spend most of that seated.

How to choose among the half days

Ten of the sixteen are half days, so this is where most people end up. Four things separate them. The number of stops: the median itinerary in our data lists four, but a half day of 4 hours realistically holds one or two estates and a stretch of road. The estate itself: a tour that names the château tells you what you will enter, and one that says "a typical Médoc property" is being honest about a rotation. The operator: the two most reviewed tours belong to the same company, so the 90 EUR Margaux half day, third in line, is the best one to compare. And the sample behind the score: a 5.0 on six reviews is not better than a 4.7 on 136.

The cheapest half day is 64 EUR for 5 hours, a 1855-themed tour rated 4.3 on four reviews, and the cheapest that has any volume behind it is the 90 EUR Margaux half day. At the other end, the most expensive half day is the 285 EUR limousine. Nothing else in between looks odd, which is a good sign for a market that is mostly the same product sold by a dozen names.

A last point on price. Because the drive eats so much of the day, the gap between a Médoc half day and a full day is larger in hours than in euros: 194 EUR for the full day against 97 for the half, for roughly twice the length and, on the two full days with lunch, a meal thrown in. If you can spare the day and want lunch, the full day is the better value per hour, and the smaller the group, the better.

Timing, and what a Cabernet harvest does

The Médoc is Cabernet country, and the left bank picks in October, later than Merlot on the right. That makes late September to mid October the busiest and most interesting stretch in a working cellar. It is also when a half day on short notice may not exist. August is the quiet month for access: most châteaux shut, and June or September with a booking made a few days ahead is the safer plan.

Questions about Médoc and Margaux wine tours

Can you visit Château Margaux?

Yes, but only by appointment, on weekdays, and not in August or at harvest, according to local guides. Three tour titles here say Margaux; check whether your itinerary names the château or a neighbouring estate in the appellation.

Can you visit Lafite Rothschild?

Not at the moment. The château's own site says it is closed to visitors until January 2028 because of works. A listing that promises Lafite should be checked with the operator; other classified estates in the same commune are open by booking.

Is there a Médoc wine tour without a car?

The cheapest way in is a tour that collects you or meets at a city point. Public transport does reach Margaux and Pauillac by train or bus, but the estates are spread along country roads. Château du Taillan, at 12 km, is the exception.

How long is a Médoc tour from Bordeaux?

Half days run about 4 to 5 hours and full days 6 to 8.5. Ten of the 16 tours are half days. The median across all 16 is 4.8 hours.

Are Médoc tours more expensive than Saint-Émilion?

Slightly: a median 160 EUR against 154. Half days are almost the same, 97 against 96 EUR. The spread is wider here because of private car days at up to 750 EUR.

Is lunch included?

On only 2 of the 16, both long days at 189 to 199 EUR. Plan to eat before or after.

For the other banks of the region see the Saint-Émilion tours, and for car days priced per vehicle the private Bordeaux tours.
