Saint-Émilion looks like the set of a French romantic comedy: the sun is out, the churches are underground, the châteaux are gorgeous and there are 10,000 different types of wine. This private day trip from San Sebastian takes you there and builds the day around it. A guide picks you up for the two and a half hour drive, explains what lies ahead and crosses Les Landes on the way. In Saint-Émilion you walk the cobblestone streets and go into a church excavated in rock in the Middle Ages. A family château producing wine since the 17th century follows, with its vineyards and three Grand Cru Classé wines. The afternoon moves to a local winery, where a sommelier leads a masterclass with five wines from different Bordeaux denominations. Lunch is in a restaurant that joins centuries-old stone, a historic château and modern glass architecture, with a parallel tasting of three local wines.

  1. Landes

Pickup on time, then a two and a half hour drive to Saint-Émilion. The guide explains what lies ahead. The road crosses Les Landes, one of Europe's largest pine forests, planted under Napoleon III to revive what was a swampy, sandy wasteland. A coffee and croissant stop comes on the way.

  2. Saint-Emilion

Saint-Émilion is a real town of cobblestone streets devoted to wine, with plenty for lovers of gastronomy and architecture, including a church excavated entirely in rock in the Middle Ages. A UNESCO heritage site.

  3. Family château near Lussac

After the walk, a visit to a family château that has produced wine since the 17th century, including its vineyards, some of the oldest in the world. Tasting of three Grand Cru Classé wines.

  4. La Cave Dourthe

A look behind the scenes of a local winery, and an introduction to the scale of the region: more than 60 Designations of Origin along the Garonne, Dordogne and Gironde rivers and more than 10,000 different wines. A sommelier leads a masterclass and tasting of five wines from different Bordeaux denominations.

  5. Lunch at a château restaurant
