Châteauneuf-du-Pape Wine Tours from Avignon
19 tours from 3 to 1,200 EUR, median 104. Only 12 titles actually name Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and one 175 EUR day holds 29% of the reviews.
Of the 19 tours on this page, 12 name Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the title. The other seven go to Gigondas, Sablet, Buisson or Violès, or leave the choice of village to whoever is driving that morning. That split is the practical fact about buying a Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine tour, because the category is really the southern Rhône seen from Avignon, and the name on the listing is not always the place on the itinerary. This page reads the 19 tours for what they enter, what they cost and what is left out: half days at 85 EUR, a seven hour day at 175 EUR that carries 29% of all the reviews, cellar visits at 3 and 20 EUR, and private days from 398 to 1,200 EUR.
Prices are per person as listed, except for private days, which price the group. Almost everything starts in Avignon; the road to the village takes 30 minutes to an hour according to the most reviewed listing. The valley, the north and the history are on the Rhône Valley guide. Here the question is narrower: which of these 19 listings is the one you want, what it includes, and where the catalogue's ratings stand on the shoulders of a single operator. Six of the listings were read in full, and where a title and an itinerary disagree we say so.

What 104 EUR buys
The median hides three separate markets. Nine shared half days cost 69 to 109 EUR, median 85, for 2 to 5 hours and usually two estates. Four shared full days cost 159 to 185 EUR for 7 to 9 hours where the duration is stated, and only one of them includes lunch. Four private days cost 398 to 1,200 EUR. The remaining two are cellar-door tastings at 3 and 20 EUR, which are not tours at all.
One listing shows a duration of 30 hours in the feed. That is a data error: its own page describes an educational tasting day that meets in the village car park, for 185 EUR and up to four guests. Ignore the 30.
Twelve titles say Châteauneuf, seven do not
A title is a promise, and these seven do not make it. We opened six of them to see where they really go.
| Listing | Price | Where it goes | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Provence Cru half day from Avignon | 90 EUR, 5 h | Gigondas, then Châteauneuf-du-Pape | The second most reviewed tour, 307 reviews at 4.7 |
| Half Day Great Vineyard Tour | 85 EUR, 5 h | Two wineries among Châteauneuf, Séguret, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Beaumes-de-Venise | The estates depend on availability; minimum 4 people |
| Small-Group Full-Day Private Wine Tour | 398 EUR, 9 h | 3 or 4 wineries chosen from eight appellations | Châteauneuf is one option among Gigondas, Tavel, Rasteau and others |
| Winery visit, Mas des Escarades | 20 EUR, 1.5 h | A cellar in Buisson, north-east of the village | Transport not included; English |
| Wine tasting in Sablet | 3 EUR, 1 h | A family estate in Sablet and Gigondas | Guided in French; a tasting, not a tour |
| Solex outing and wine tasting | 69 EUR, 2.5 h | Vineyards around Violès and Gigondas | You ride a vintage moped; organic wines; from 2 people |
None of this makes them bad. The Provence Cru half day is the second most reviewed tour here and does stop at Châteauneuf. But the 85 EUR half day may send you to Gigondas or Vacqueyras instead, and if the village is what you came for, choose a title that names it.
Starting at the Palace of the Popes
The pinnacles in the photo are part of the Palais des Papes, and it is where the most popular listing starts: the meeting point is in front of a restaurant next to it. 26% of the 19 listings include pickup; most of the others meet you at the tourist office or by the palace.
The reason the popes matter here is the name: Clement V moved the papal court to Avignon in 1309, and the new castle of the pope in the wine village, built under John XXII, is how Châteauneuf-du-Pape got its name. The transfer from the city is 30 minutes to an hour, and non-residents are told to park by the palace.
The 175 EUR day that holds 29% of the reviews
One listing has 566 of the 1,919 reviews and a perfect 5.0. It is a 7 hour day with a bilingual guide who is also a sommelier, three wineries, a lunch stop in a traditional restaurant in the village, and a tasting in an old cellar. It is capped at seven guests, it does not accept children, and it is not suitable for reduced mobility. Lunch is not included, and the guide does not eat with you.
The other full-day leader is a 9 hour, 170 EUR listing with lunch included, rated 4.8 on 299 reviews from another operator. Together those two hold 45% of the reviews on the page. They are the market: if a day trip is what you want, compare those two first, and read the smaller ones against them.
With 15 operators and a 5.0 holding nearly a third of the reviews, the score here is the score of one guide's day. It is a good day. It is not the average.
| Type | Count | Price | Stops | Lunch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Half day from Avignon | 9 | 69 to 109 EUR | Two estates, usually | 1 of 9 |
| Full day | 4 | 159 to 185 EUR | Three estates on the popular day | 1 of 4 |
| Private day | 4 | 398 to 1,200 EUR | 3 or 4 estates chosen with the guide | 0 of 4 |
| Cellar-door tasting | 2 | 3 to 20 EUR | One estate | No |
From Marseille, and what it costs
The skyline is Avignon, which is also where a shore excursion from Marseille brings its passengers: 7 hours at 159 EUR, rated 4.3 on 24 reviews, and the lowest score on the page. A private day from Marseille is listed at 1,200 EUR for 8 hours, the dearest tour here by a wide margin.
If you land on the coast and want this village, the cheaper way is to get yourself to Avignon and join a half day at about 85 EUR. The Marseille transfer is the difference between a 159 EUR and an 85 EUR day.
Private days and the sums
Four private days cover the village in some form. A 495 EUR day with three estates and private tastings, 8 hours, rated 4.9 on 38 reviews. A 398 EUR Avignon day where you choose three or four wineries. A 695 EUR full day, 7 hours, with only three reviews. And the 1,200 EUR Marseille tasting day. The listings cap the party at 4 to 8 people, so the price is for the group and the per head figure shrinks fast.
At 398 EUR with a cap of 8, a full party pays 50 EUR each, below the half day. Two people pay about 200 EUR each, more than twice the half day. The rule is the usual one: private pays off for four or more, and for a couple it buys privacy and flexibility at about double the cost.
Cellar-door visits and the price of a tasting
Two listings are a visit to one cellar. The 20 EUR visit at Mas des Escarades lasts 90 minutes, runs in English, takes up to 15 people and does not include transport. The 3 EUR Sablet tasting is an hour at a family estate of about fifteen hectares, in French, for up to 10 people, and its price looks like a booking fee rather than the cost of the wine. Treat both as a way to book a time, not as a day out.
What the glass holds
The appellation covers 3,150 hectares across five communes, by the growers' syndicate, and makes some 90,000 hectolitres a year, about 12 million bottles, of which 93% is red. The soil is covered in large rounded pebbles, the galets roulés, which hold the day's heat. The syndicate counts 13 grape varieties in the appellation's tradition. Wikipedia reaches 18 by counting colour variants, such as white and grey Grenache, as separate varieties. Both are right, which is why the number you hear depends on the guide.
On a half day, expect two estates and five or six wines, reds mostly, with a white if the estate makes one. The day trips add a third estate and a lunch. The decree dates from 15 May 1936, among the first wine appellations in France, and the Rhône Valley guide has the timeline.
Before you book a half day
Three questions save most of the disappointment. Which villages? The 85 EUR half day lists Châteauneuf, Séguret, Gigondas, Vacqueyras and Beaumes-de-Venise as options and says the estates depend on availability. How many people? Two of the half days state minimum numbers, one of them four, and say they may be cancelled after confirmation if too few book; you are then offered an alternative or a refund. What is in the price? Most list a driver, a minivan, water and a tasting. Gratuities are not included, and food is not included unless the listing says so.
Meeting points matter too. The half days meet in central Avignon, near the tourist office in the listings we opened, and return there. That is easy if you stay in town and awkward if you come from a campsite or a village.
Mistakes that cost an afternoon
Assuming every title means the village. Expecting lunch on a half day: one of the nine includes a meal. Bringing children to the popular day, which does not allow them. Planning a bus day around a service that, according to route planners, runs four days a week from Avignon. And ignoring the drive back: the limit in France is 0.5 g/l, which is why the day is sold with a driver.
Questions about Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine tours
How do you get from Avignon to Châteauneuf-du-Pape?
By tour, which meets in Avignon and drives 30 minutes to an hour. Public transport exists: a bus from Avignon Aubanel takes about 47 minutes but runs only on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and train-plus-bus routes take about 1 h 30.
How much does a Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine tour cost?
A shared half day costs a median 85 EUR, from 69 to 109. A shared full day costs 159 to 185 EUR. Private days cost 398 to 1,200 EUR. A cellar-door tasting can cost as little as 3 to 20 EUR.
Is lunch included?
On 2 of the 19 tours. The most popular day, 175 EUR for 7 hours, stops for lunch in a village restaurant but does not include it. Plan on the price of a meal on top.
Half day or full day?
A half day, about 85 EUR, for two estates and an afternoon in Avignon. A full day, 159 to 185 EUR, for three estates and lunch. The extra costs about 80 EUR for three more hours.
Can I visit with children?
It depends. The most reviewed day does not allow children. The Provence Cru half day allows children accompanied by an adult. Check the listing before booking.
Why are some listings not about Châteauneuf?
Because the category covers the southern Rhône from Avignon. Of the seven titles that do not name the village, the six we opened go to Gigondas, Sablet, Buisson or Violès, or make the village one option among several.
For the wider valley see the Rhône Valley guide, and for another southern French region compare Provence wine tours.
